Justin Bieber and Sabrina Carpenter both headlined Coachella this year. And from a cinematography standpoint, the look of their performances couldn't have been any different. Carpenter's setup was a full Hollywood production. Multi- camera coverage, dynamic lighting design, choreographed camera movement. Every frame was pre-planned. She literally transformed the main stage into Sabrina wood. This is the traditional Coachella formula. Make it look as massive as it feels. Bieber did the exact opposite. One camera operator on stage, Bieber's laptop fed directly into the LED screens behind him. The guy's literally playing his YouTube videos from 2008. On paper, that sounds like a disaster. But here's what the data actually tells us. The day after Bieber's first set, his catalog was streamed 24. 6 million times in the US alone. A 211% jump from the Sunday before. By Monday, it had climbed to nearly 31 million. His song Beauty and the Beat saw a 390% increase in streams and charted in the Spotify top five. And this is all from weekend 1. Meanwhile, Bieber's Coachella clips hit over 11 million YouTube views, the most of any performance at the festival. Bieber's entire career started on YouTube. Grainy handheld amateur footage. That was his origin. So bringing that aesthetic to the biggest festival stage in the world, that's not a technical failure. That's visual storytelling. The camera choice and style is the message and the audience felt it. Two completely valid cinematography and style choices, but the question is which one actually worked better?
