Intro

Ah. — Oh, Tom. — Got a nice set of boobs. — Welcome to your year end special of retro news, homebrews, nostalgia, and memes. It is episode 48 of the Retro Show. All the things they meant to me. The gifts they gave the new Christmas tree. And I still come back to you. — And on that note, it is time for us to see what has been going on in the last few months since the last episode uh in this week's or this month, this year's old news. Ah, that's old news.

Old News

— And first up, did you hear about this? — No. — A YouTuber uh rebooted the brand in July on July 12th, 2025. — Oh. — Uh which coincidentally we've been very quiet since then. — Yes. — Don't know what we've been doing with our time. — Raising a child. That's what it was. — She's so big now. — Yeah. Well, that's the dog, the baby, and the Commodore. That's the third one. But yes, this is the Commodore 64 Ultimate. — Thanks very much to Time Extension for these fantastic photos. There's an example of it right here. — Wow. — And it comes with all these kind of cool things like a spiral bound user guide, which we used to love back in the day. — Mhm. — Do you know that was actually a New York Times bestseller because the computer sold so many units? technically — and it came with the book. This is what's inside it. You can learn to code and all that great stuff. — Um, I love this — and it's a big upgrade on the original Commodore 64. Has all these menu options. Turbo boost doesn't turn it into Night Rider, but let you speed up the processor. Uh, joystick emulation using the keyboard only. All kinds of fun stuff. But most fun of all, you remember King — is Como Serve File Search, which uh gives you access to thousands of programs online. — That's a lot. — Yeah. And you can download and run them straight on the computer. Uh it also comes with a USB cassette that has hundreds of titles on it as well. And finally, of course, those LEDs that you can customize to your heart's content. I like the serpentine version. Um, however, — oh, and it comes with GIOS, — the gooey. — But in all seriousness, that's a fantastic way if you're into some digital minimalism and you just want a distraction-free freewriting space, you can write some write a novel on your Commodore 64. — Distraction free. — Yeah, I like that. With a fantastic mechanical keyboard, you can try that out as well. But don't take my word for it. Commodore 64 Ultimate is the best piece of retro revival hardware I have ever experienced. Every important detail here is immaculately executed. From the subtle texture of the keys to the unexpected floppy drive sound effects when you start up the program, it's modern updates like HDMI out, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi networking add to the experience by breaking down some of the more cumbersome barriers with old computers. Those modern additions are just that, additions to a system that still gives you the option to experience things as they were. The genuine love that went into this revival absolutely shines through in every part of the experience. And I am so excited to see what community wants you to see around Commodore 64 Ultimate and what they use from the past to build toward the future. If you have even the slightest interest in old school computing, you should absolutely add this to your collection. It is pure 8bit joy. — It's 10 out of 100. — Oh, — but still I mean — that's not bad for a first product for a company. — So, thank you so much, Seth, from IGN. Uh, and honestly, we are blown away at Commodore all the reviews. — Yeah. — Uh, it it's scored five out of five in Tom's Hardware. I think got an editor's pick 9 out of 10 in time extension and so on. We are blown away and people ask how is it possible? How do we get this done in basically 5 months or so? And I think the answer to that is uh and huge shout out to Gideon's as well for inventing the ultimate 64 that we based this on. Uh although it's got several enhancements, we could not have done this without Gideon. Same with Jake for the cases. Jim for the keyboards, Puppy Fractic for the pause button, and I've been delivering some of these around the country. Uh, there was a bit of a mixup here, as Jason pointed out. I did accidentally package myself and then a Commodore 64 delivered me. — Got a nice set of boobs. — That's the power supply. And the other power supply. — It's from uh Robin Hood. Men in tights when they dress up as women. And Blinken accidentally or no, he's grabbing a statue cuz someone's talking to him and he thinks that statue is the person. Do — we need to remove her handlers? — That would be nice. Thank you. — Remove that for now. — She's a dog. — Oh, all right. — Good dog. — Now I can see you. — Yeah. You mean Robin Hood uh Perry in paper? — Yes. Anyway. — Anyway, I have been delivering those and here's some of them that arrived. Here is one that was unwrapped at Christmas a few days ago. This is what it's all about. Getting those out there and uh — helping people relive Christmas the way we did back in 1982 to 1994. — We were promised. Burn steel in a cold. The future we were promised slip through fingers of gold. I had to buy a delivery for John. Hello. Yeah, you John. — Hi, I'm Perry, CEO of Commodore. — What's arrived? — We have — Commodore 64. It's arrived. — Look at that. Starlight Starlight. That was a take over the house. Just like that. I never had a disc drive. Couldn't afford a disc drive. — The unboxing begins. — We have the joysticks and stuff over here. The accessorizers. — Oh, look. Oh wow. Every bus still drops my jaw. It's not just a machine. It's my past. It's my dream. Back to 64. My old best friend. Hey, it's a magic the joy won't end with me is the store. Take me back. Take me back to 64. Stars in digital skies. Who knew the future could fit so tight in a beige box lighting up my life? — Amy programing his first program on Commodore 64 just like his daddy did 40 years ago. — Take me back. Absolutely magical and we are so honored at Commodore that we got to enable people to relive things in this way. Speaking of reliving things, you won't be able to relive this anymore. — Oh, with a final screech, AOL's dialup service goes silent. One of the earliest consumer internet portals, AOL's dialup option, was once the most common way for people to access the early web. I was one of those people. — You were? Yeah. I had AOL in the UK, — but — it was just called AOL America online — online. Yeah. — AOL [snorts] UK, but taking over from it is comos file search. Don't know if we mentioned that. Uh you can download. We'll be expanding that service though. So maybe I don't know if we want to get email on it. That's something we want to help you get away from. — Yeah. — But maybe the screeching we can bring back. — Oh, I miss that. I think everyone had a very specific I used to call it like the dial-up song and everyone's was a little bit different. — Depended on the speed as well. — Oh, yeah. — Like um 1900 19,200 would be — like that. Mhm. — Yeah. Whereas 564 or 566 would be more like — like that. — Yeah. — So yeah. [snorts] — Anyway, moving — and wait what which one was the fax machine? — The fax machine was — Thank you Elaine from Seinfeld. — In other news, — that is Robocop standing guard in Detroit. Okay, it's just this 11 foot tall statue of the movie character. The 1987 film though was set in a futuristic version of the city. That's right. — A Kickstarter campaign was launched in 2012 after the idea popped up on social media. The idea was Detroit needed something like the Rocky statue in Philadelphia. After years of setbacks, it's now standing tall outside of an event space. — Thought about retro 2012. Are you okay? She's having an existential crisis. She's like, I remember doing this a few months ago, but I thought we were done. Anyway, yeah. — Uh, that is it for old news. — That was old news. — Yeah. Uh, next up, let's see behind the

Retro Memes

scenes of the making of Back to the Future 4 in I'll see what you mean. — We'll see what he meant. — Do you think it's warm in the car? — They're like, "Turn the heating down. What's going on? " — I didn't know I had seat warmers in this car. — Yeah, my head is on fire. I probably should get out. Anyway, I hope they were okay in all seriousness. Next up, you seen these things with they cut the wire and then get them AirPods. He doesn't have Bluetooth. — Are they twins? — You can ask them. It's the username. All right. Next up, some old school rap. Have you seen that before? That's hilarious. — Please read. — Uh, do you need me to move my car? — Good. — Good to know. — A neighbor caught John Candy on home video dropping off Kevin's mom at the Home Alone house. A version we may never see. — Isn't that cool? — Yeah. You know, you could use AI to probably do different angles of that. — That is our beloved Katherine O'Hara. — David. — Cavan. — Kevan. — Fantastic. Thanks, Mike. — That's very cool. — Hi, Funky. — Look at this. Windows 95 still running in an abandoned hospital. — Just screen saver. — That screen saver. — Remember that the maze? — Just the red brick. So, I guess it was just loading that whole time. — Yeah. — Surprisingly undusty, but they just apparently they just booted it up and started working. [clears throat] — Very cool. 95. That's 30 years ago. — It's before I was born. — Oh, yes. — Gosh. — Watch how satisfying this is. — Thank you. — If Disney made Revenge of the Sith, — you wanted to see me, Chancellor? Yes, Anakin, come closer. I have good news. — Oh, — now do you get the also the reference of why I showed that with my story from the set? — Uh, oh yes, yeah, yeah. — Can you recount the story? — Now, kiss. Uh, go ahead. — That was Anakin's standing on Star Wars. — He's never mentioned it before — and I don't like to talk about it. However, uh in we did this scene and it was initially just me and Ian McDermad uh and I was kneeling, you know, next to him. He was in the chair. Hayden was getting his makeup done still. And George Lucas comes over and starts directing us so that I can rehearse the scene with Palpatine. Palpatine rehears And George says Anakin comes over, kneels down, and uh we kind of look at each other and and he it was getting awkward. He was the pause was getting very awkward and I you know how you feel, you have to feel the silence. Thank you. Uh so he said and I said and kiss. It was just dead silence on the set and George looked at me and went and kissed. So, luckily he played into the joke. But, um, there it is. That's how weird. That's the actual scene — that I directed. — Yes. — As it really should have been. — Thank you for that. Anna, can you fix my daddy's broken PS3? We have to send the circuit board somewhere for repair. — Can't we just send it to someone that can print a new custom board like PCB way? — Where do you think you can get PCBs for $5? — $5. — Miles can't fix the old board, but PCB way builds the Commodore 64 Ultimate. — Wait, we can get the new Commodore 64 Ultimate instead of fixing this thing? That's the ultimate Christmas gift. — That's the ultimate upgrade. — Now, where did we land on getting 1,000 carats? — Merry Christmas and thank you PCB way. — Merry Christmas to you guys. So good to see you back and thanks for doing this end of year special. And speaking of PCB way, — look, they're having a Christmas sale. — Oh, — and they sent us a gift. So, — you know, we still have the ornaments from several years ago. The little light up ones. — They go on our tree. Would you like to open? — Oh, yes. — Gold seal. — Oh, and some stickers. — Ooh, they're little mascot. Merry Christmas and happy new year. — A scarf. Oh, thank you. It's from Elaine. Hi, Elaine. — Hi, Ela. — Hi, Liz. Uh, thank you for the scarf as well. — And what else have we got? H. — Oh, was not expecting that. Um, guys, we are partner of the year, second year running. — Wow. — Thank you so much. Oh my gosh, we've got a lot to live up to now. Yes. — It's probably something to do with the fact that I flew to China to meet with them. But either way, oh, that's awesome. Thank you so much. — Okay, what else have we got? — Lots of green things. Oh, for you. — I think it's a keychain. — Keychain? — Yeah. — I never lose my keys. — Maybe the baby would like — I know she would. — I'm going to throw this. Ready? — And finally, — ta. Oh, cute. A tea set. — I've got to show you guys something. Oh. Um, Lady Fractic had to go and attend to the baby who uh is crying. But look at this. This is from Marvin Dukesma. It is a very kind gift. This is actual crockery from the German headquarters of Commodore. And how funny that we've got almost matching Commodore PCB way crockery set. That's so funny. It's time for your home brerews. We'll see what's been brewing in those teacups.

Oldschool Homebrews

— You seen this? — Is this real? — This is real. Not AI, not some skit. You can actually see his Insta 360 tied to the front of his speeder bike. — This is a drone that you can ride. And if you want to dress up, that's optional. I'm assuming my Christmas present is just arriving late this year. Okay. — It's coming by bird. drone. A volort there. Very cool. All right. If you ever wondered what a kit Delorean hybrid might look like, now you know. Gwing doors. Okay. Oh, — and you can go a team style kit as well. — Ah, I pity the fool. — And herby. — Looks like he's smiling with red lipstick. Very nice. Thank you, Toaster Artist. — Oh, — next up. Now, as you know, we get a automated fax test every week. And thank you guys for all the faxes that still coming in. Even got one yesterday — and for your kind words. We don't have time to read those out in this particular show, but I will get back to them at some point. — Back to the facts. However, in our weekly test, chat GPT sends a random fact about faxes. Fact facts. — Did you know that the world's oldest fax machine is located in the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean? It belonged to the Titanic and was used to send messages to other ships. — Thank you. Thank you, Chat GPT, for that. — Very accurate. Uh, you know, it's always known for being 100% accurate. — Yeah. Can someone fact check that? I feel like there's some nugget of truth to that. Like a radio — Morse code with the beep beep beep. Like that's how they do — they even have electricity then. I wasn't alive back then. It's before my time as I keep saying. Um, next time. — This is cool. So, right there is my Astro Wars. Um, arcade. — Careful how you say that. — Yeah. and I played that to death when I was 12, which wasn't before my time. This is in the um Retro Computing Museum near Leicester and this was sent in by Derek Chandler. It's a full-size Astro Wars arcade. It runs MAMEim, the multi- arcade machine emulator. Yeah, I think that's it. — Sounds right. — And look at this. Thank you. The thing I loved about Astro Wars, it was really clever because your spaceship would go up the screen and the baddies would come down, but some of the baddies were partially your spaceship so that it could reuse those positions. — Smart. — So clever. Next up. — Oh. — Oh, a one piece. Oh, no. An allin-one. Oh, I know what this is. — This is from Crowie. [snorts] Oh, — they have sent us this. It is an open- source AI education and development station. Now, the thing I like is they've included a BBC Micro: bit. So, we of course had the BBC Micro Model B. Um, back in school in the 80s, I used to sit next to Kate Baconale and we would learn how to code in basic. — He's never mentioned that either. — Um, this is the BBC's new micro computer. — That's cool. It is quite small. That's what she said. And this is I don't know. I don't know what that is, but let's take a look inside here. — Computer. — A computer. Yeah. — My gosh, that is heavy. — That's what he's I don't know. — Doc Brown said — this is heavy. — Oh, cool. — Wa! Look at all this. You get like — Nintendo SNES controllers and stuff. — Yeah. Well, I figure this is like the basis of programming and reminds me of like the um chemistry kits that you could get that had all of the chemicals and things. — Yeah. So, it's basically a build your own computer and you get to do that with your kids and learn how or for them to learn how computers work. — Oops. — Oh, break. I'm guessing it's this — so you can — that magnets on. — Did you just do that? — So you can transport it around. — Yeah. — In its little briefcase form and then pitch up at uh — stars. Put that on the desk in front of you. — Uh — oh. Wow. And then it's got docks. There's the Raspberry Pi. Look, you get free air with it. I love that. Wow, that's really good. Actually, — it also gives you access to the cables. And this is so well done, honestly. — Very cool. Crow pie. — I'm very impressed. But I told you not to call me that. — It'll set you back $289 as the crow pies. — I feel like it's endless entertainment. — Very nice. — Very cool. — This is Tegan Morgan. I'm Tim Morgan and this is one of the limited number of deb kits of the Commodore 64 Ultimate. So, I thought I would document this historic little tiny piece of the new Commodore history. Awesome. — Oh my god. — Look at this. — It's in the inside matters. — That's right. Breathe it in, people. — It's tender. — There you go, people. Hey T again. Close your eyes. Open. — What? Tumblr 60. — Close your eyes. Do you think this would be interesting? — What the? Open. Close your eyes. Open. — How many more do you have? — And that is it for home brerews. And coming up finally

Nostalgia Flakes ft. The Gallery

— how about a nice delicious end ofear bowl of nostalgia flakes? H. — And up first, it's time for our end of year visit to — the gallery — Christmas edition. — It's a funny color. C64. Oh, cuz it's a Vic 20. — It almost looks like you when you were young. — It was me. changed my name from Dibble. [snorts] Uh, a SNES. He does look happy. Is a cat. — That's his arm. Another Vic 20. — Mhm. — Wow. — In Sweden. — Sweden. Lucky Bros. — Not to be confused with BRs. — Brass. Good band. We wish you a — very clever, darling. Looks like my childhood friend, Alex. He's a happy boy. — Get that duck. — Oh yeah, duck hunt. — Careful how you say that. — I bet that was a shog. — Yeah. [snorts] — Uh, and this one is, uh, quite famous. — Oh, — not sure. — I'm not sure she's happy. — Is that what I was meant to say? — Yeah, I'm not sure she's happy about it. — Okay. Uh well, speaking of sh don't tell anyone, but Nikki, who actually is the girl in that meme, she commented on a post that I put on I think our Tik Tok account and said something about it was time to recreate that meme. So, we took her seriously and we sent her a Commodore 64 and she as we speak is in the process of recreating that or she already did it at Christmas. So, we're going to be showing that on our Commodore social media very soon before and after. — I cannot wait to see that. — Can't wait, Nikki. That's awesome of you to do that. Good job. [snorts] Okay, next up, I said I was delivering some Commodore 64s. This is another one. And after seeing all those Christmas scenes from the 80s, it's so incredible to me to see a brand new Commodore 64 from Commodore. — Yeah. — Opened at Christmas and someone's kids playing on it. Um, and this is from Andy Vicey. Uh, and that's actually a program he created. — That's cool. — on the C64. — I just want to say these pictures are exactly the same as the originals. The only real difference is that the TVs are bigger and the photos are in high def, but it's often kids on the floor playing with their controllers — just kind of pitched up with the computer just thrown — plugged in as fast as possible. — That's a good point. — Yeah, — that's where we set ours up as well, just on by the side of the TV in the living room. — Yeah. — Uh baby loves the Christmas — baby height. Yeah, — she loves the new Christmas demo. Um — Yes. on the we've got both of them on the USB cassette, but she loves the jingle bells and the — She loves to do her work. — Do her work, we call it. — A particular favorite is Santa got run over by the reindeer. — Yeah. No, it's Grandma got run over by a reindeer. [clears throat] — Santa. — Who is that in the snow dead then? — That's grandma. — Oh, I thought it was Santa. — No, Santa is the one that essentially ran her over. — Which one's Jesus? Anyway, so it's a whole another story. Next up, — someone found their exact childhood Game Boy at a garage sale 20 years later. Same sticker, same game, same scratches. Imagine the feeling. — Isn't that amazing? I used AI to ask if this was AI, and the AI said it's not AI. Um, pretty confident. Look at the exact match on the stickers. — This is so special. — And I dream of finding my original Commodore 64. Next up, — I bought back all my Nintendo games from the person I sold them to in high school. — I went on Facebook. I found this person and I just said, "Hey, is I in high school when I was a senior. I had to sell my Nintendo games. " And I was the one that had Nintendo longer than everybody else. So, I had all I like Gilligans Island, all these games that nobody else wanted, they gave to me cuz nobody else had a Nintendo and they couldn't sell these games. So, I'd play them cuz I love video games. And it hurt me so much. And I sold them — and I said, "Hey man, I don't know if you remember me, my name is Ben. I sold you my Nintendo and my Nintendo games and my Power Pad and my Zapper when I was a kid. Is there any way you have any of those left? And he's like, "Oh my god, first of all, this has to be you. Nobody knows that in high school you sold me whatever cuz my name is different on Facebook. " He goes, "I might have them. I have a storage container. " And he let me take them back and buy them back. When he got there, I saw the Nintendo's mine. It had the same gum stain that mine did. And I took a Zelda and I put it in and it said my name in it. And it was my exact game. And all of them are my exact games. I can pick up right where I left off. — I literally got emotional next. [clears throat] — A That's really cute. I can dream that will happen to me one day. — I mean, you've got the platform. If anyone has your stuff, — I'll do an episode about it sometime. — You're cleaning your room and you find a cheat sheet for PS2 games from 2005. — Before I was born. Next. Even as an adult, you still make time to check out the toy. I'll just remember that feeling. I did this all the time at Target, but now I have an excuse. — Yeah, now we can do it for real. — What is it? — It's wire. It's a spool of wire. And I'm almost out of it. Can you see the spool of wire? — Mhm. — I'm almost out of it. — Okay. And I've had this spool of wire for like 40 years. I bought it like this a long It's on a piece of a long time ago, but it's like 40 years of my life is in the wire that's gone. Does that make sense? This is what's left. — I'm sorry to hear that and sad for you, but you're wearing your Jets hat and I'm a little concerned right now that you're wearing your Jets hat. And that's why men don't open up about their feelings. But what a metaphor. — Yeah. — Yeah. It's very powerful. Um I have some of my dad's original tools. I don't think I have the wire. But uh — why are you looking at me in that way? that way? Haha. — Last up. — Found him in the garage looking through his toy box. He thought his parents threw out. I had a moment like this many, many years ago. Found all my McDonald's toys. The wonder There's that childhood face that I — like it was 12. Yeah. — And I' I'm seeing that when I see people sending us pictures with the Commodore 64 Ultimate. It's a glimpse into that child that's been sitting inside them just really pushes through regardless of how old they are. — Yeah. It's a powerful thing. Well, that is the end of our show and we just want to thank you for all your support with Retro Recipes and of course Commodore and Puppy Fractic herself. [snorts and sighs] Until next time, perry Christmas, happy new year, and it just remains for us to say thanks for watching. — Subscribe and support below. And cheerio. — Baby will come back to you.
