Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00)

When I was going through a massive quarter-life crisis in my mid-20s, — around that time I got obsessed with reading books, writing books eventually, and studying everything that could possibly improve my life. And around that time I was studying mostly goal-setting books and goal-setting advice from people and gurus and people online. But over a period of time I learned reinventing your life is different from just setting goals. In this video, I want to give you a step-by-step framework to reinvent your life from someone who's done it dozens and dozens of times in different phases of life. What's up guys? Alex Hein over at Modern Health Monk, author of the book Milk the Pigeon, a field guide for anyone lost in their 20s. Let's jump in. A few years back I was having a conversation with one of my dad's friends, and I told him, "You know, I've coached all these people and I'm helping people with this framework for reinventing themselves. " And I said, "You know the feeling where you just wake up with this horrible feeling of being lost, like life didn't work out the way you thought it would, and you thought like at this age, 35, 45, whatever it is, you would have been doing your dream job, and making six figures, or you would have found that person that you wanted to marry and have kids with and build a family and a life with. " And you're like, "How? Why didn't that happen? " My dad's friend said, "Where did you get that information? It's like you're reading my own thoughts that I say to myself in the shower in the morning. " And what I found is that, you know, for so many of us we have a fantasy, a delusion, about how life will get better over time. And because we don't follow a process that involves self-awareness, journaling, reflection, and actually consciously tracking our goals, usually that state never comes to be, which means that as you age, whether you're 25 or 45 or 65, the life usually doesn't materialize, not because you're not smart, because something's wrong with you, not because you're not special, because you didn't actually follow a process to truly make each year better than the rest. Now, what I find with reinventing yourself is that there's a number of reasons why we end up living the same year and we end up being depressed when we're 45 because life looks the exact same. Typically, we don't have a lot of self-awareness about what actually produces change in life. You have to change two things. One, the narrative or the story in your head, and number two, your daily rituals and actions. So, that's why people have this fantasy, you know, we're 25 and we think by 30 I'll have a six-figure job doing what I love. But what does our day-to-day life look like? We work 9:00 to 6:00, we come home, and we doomscroll on Instagram, watch Netflix, and maybe hang out with a friend. We do that seven days a week, and then we didn't dedicate any time finding a new career, getting a raise, acquiring valuable skills that will allow that to happen. And then we're 30 and we're like, "Why am I only earning 55, 60k still? And why am I still single? " Well, you were still dating the same women or the same men you have been for the last 10 years. You didn't think at all about what you wanted in a person or who you're compatible with. So, what happens is there's a delusion that as time goes on, life gets better. But for many people, life just gets worse. One of my favorite personal development speakers, Earl Nightingale, says people are like ships without a rudder. You know, if a ship is even 1° off course and it's going on a 1-month journey around the world, it ends up on an entirely different continent. Because if you just follow the currents, the ship's going to end up wherever, in Europe, in South America, in Africa. But this is exactly how it shows up in life. If you have no deliberate plan, you are not deliberately steering the ship and course correcting every day or every week, you are going to just be swept away by the current, and you are not going to end up where you wanted to be. You're thought you would be. Now, something that's really important when you're in these stages of being lost and you want to reinvent yourself, you have to own and redirect the feeling of being lost and directionless. You know, because if every day you're like how I was, "I'm lost, what's my life purpose, why do I hate my job, I don't want to be here, here for another 3 years, year. " If you have those thoughts repeating in your brain, it's not going to make you feel very good day-to-day. But if you realize that feeling lost is just a sign that your next chapter in life is trying to emerge, that is a healthy, positive thought that will lead you to redirect your life in a incredibly positive, forward-focused way. When you're in the process of reinvention, it's a sort of death and rebirth phase. It commonly happens with my clients after divorce, after somebody dies, in or after their own chronic illness. So, usually these phases show up during periods of upheaval. I was 22, I quit my job to book a one-way ticket to China. And while I was on the mission, I was excited. It was only that when I came home that I started to feel very lost. So, for many of us it will be during these states where we're in transition. And in transition, inevitably it feels psychologically like you're standing at the edge of this dark forest in the middle of the night. You don't know if there's wolves and lions and bears in there. There's no light, it's cold, and you know somewhere on the other side is the city you're trying to get to. It's scary. You don't have a light, you don't know what the path is, you don't have a GPS, you don't have a compass. So, what do

Segment 2 (05:00 - 08:00)

you do? Understand that feeling lost isn't that you're lost. It's a sign that your next chapter is trying to emerge from your soul. Now, one of the things I found that's helped me the most in my 20s and 30s, I've I wrote an entire bloody book on it. What I found was that having a specific road map to reinventing yourself during those phases of life where you're lost, directionless, depressed, confused, is monumental. So, I actually put together a 12-step guide to reinventing yourself. If you're going through a quarter-life crisis or midlife crisis, you're lost, directionless, confused, you want to get unlost, find sort of like what that next chapter is of career and your life and your passions and hobbies, download the guide right below this video, it's free, modernhealthmonk. com/reinvent. And that goes through my 12-step process to reinvent yourself in the next 90 days. But also, there's another resource and exercise that's really made a difference. So, if you don't know Suzy Batiz, Suzy Batiz is the CEO of Poo-Pourri, you know, the toilet spray. And Suzy Batiz has some amazing interviews with her past life and really what that looked like before she was successful. She talked about being bankrupt multiple times, having suicide attempts, being divorced multiple times, and just feeling like not only was she the worst entrepreneur ever, that she was sort of like a failure as a person. And after this failure after failure, she ended up taking a sabbatical for several years just to focus on healing. And she said, "I'm never going to do a business again that isn't aligned, right? Doesn't make me feel good in the process of building it. " Now, interesting for her, the next business became Poo-Pourri, and she became one of Forbes' richest women in America because of that business. And one thing she talks about a lot is following your resonance radar. In life, there are things and people and jobs and careers where they add energy to you or they take it away. There are people and friends you feel more drained when you're around, or you feel more lit up and inspired when you're around. And there endless things, hobbies to do, and endless careers that you could spend your time doing that increase your energy or they take from that energy. And what she says is, if you just follow more of what lights you up, more of what excites you, over time, eventually, your whole life will become resonant. And it's almost like your energy and your vibration increases more and more to the point where now you are so lit up that you are a magnetic human being. And what I found is in the process of reinvention, we're typically in those lower vibrational states, lost, confused, anxious, often depressed. And if you commit yourself to just taking the time to keep a little journal and write down all the things that made me feel resonant today, and you just do more of that. Saturday morning, go to the gym and go to a cafe and just like write and relax and journal. You know, Sunday night, go on a date. Ask out one woman per week so you at least you have something to do and some social interaction. Do that for 3 months and your life will be so incredible, you will never look back because this exercise is completely life-altering when you're in the process of reinvention. Now, one thing no one talks about when you reinvent your life is there's actually four stages to go from lost and confused and what do I do? Is this all there is? To my life is awesome again. I actually took the time to shoot an entire video on the four phases of reinventing your life right up here.
