12 years, 20+ managers, 4 promotions

Having a non-technical manager when you work in a technical role is literally a career suicide. And I learned this the hard way. Never. Never again. In the last 12 years in tech, over 20 managers, four promotions, two big tech companies, and a startup. This is just one of the 10 harsh truths that I wish somebody had told me when I started. And number seven is what nobody talks about, but everybody needs to hear. Number one

Truth #1: Your manager has a favorite

your manager has a favorite. Earlier in my career, I thought promotions were about merit. I believed if I just did good work, everything would work out. My first job as a data engineer, I was on a tiny team, just three people, me, my manager, and my teammate. At first, I didn't notice anything. But over time, I started noticing a pattern. My teammate got more praises, more visible projects, more airtime among my skips and leadership. And a year later, I realized what was happening. My manager had a favorite. And here is the uncomfortable part, your manager has a favorite, too. And I eventually learned how to become a favorite. Not with every manager, but with some of the managers. And honestly, the manager where I was the favorite, my career moved faster and things felt somewhat easier. So yes, your manager has a favorite, not because they're evil or they're out to get you. It's because they're human and human have bias. And it's okay if you're not your manager's favorite, but just knowing that there is a favorite. I think that is just helpful enough just to understand things and how things work in the corporate setting.

Truth #2: Visibility over hard work

Number two, hard work is not enough. Visibility is. As a data scientist, I once worked on a massive project. It was monthslong project. There were multiple teams involved and I was the main PC working on the project. The project ended up being very successful. It made the company millions of dollars and almost every team in my org knew about the project. At the end of every year, my org would do this all hands. At the all hands, there would be like org announcements and whatnot, but there will also be a section about awards. And because I worked on this massive project and it totally qualified for the award, I just assumed that I would get the award. I went to that award ceremony and guess what? I did not get the award. But guess who did? My manager did. I mean I was happy for him but I was the IC who did the work and who basically figured out the solution and who implemented it. So I was a little hurt. Next year I ended up doing another massive project and this time I realized I have to do something different. So instead of just waiting to be noticed I actually reached out to the people that work with me on that project and asked me to nominate for the award that was happening at the next all hands. And guess what? I got the award and not only me, my manager got the award. So, we all got to go on stage and my team got recognized for best collaborator and best collaboration. So, here's the thing. Doing hard work is not enough. You actually have to advocate for yourself and you have to pave the path to get the visibility and get the recognition you deserve. Sadly, things would be like much better if you just did the work and you would be recognized. It's actually not that. You have to do the work and then more work to basically for other people to realize that you actually did the work. I don't know if that even makes sense, but that is the harsh reality and the lesson number two that I've learned the hard way. But here is what most people get

Wispr Flow: voice-to-text tool (sponsored)

wrong about visibility. It's not just about showing up. It is about communicating your impact clearly and quickly. One tool that has helped me do that is Whisper Flow, who is also sponsoring today's video. I use voice to text in almost every part of my work because I can think faster than I type and speaking helps me get ideas out without overediting or losing my train of thought. The built-in dictation on Apple Siri is honestly not that good. It makes too many mistakes and I end up fixing things instead of actually moving fast which defeats the whole purpose of dictation. But with Whisper Pro, I can just talk and keep going and it works across all the apps I already use, including Chad GBT, Notion, Slack, Gmail, and even social media. Let me actually show you an example in Notion. I have Whisper Flow set up to my function shortcut. So, as soon as I tap the Fn function button, it enables. Let me show you two things you should do to stand out at work. Number one, tie your work to business impact so it's clear why it matters. For example, instead of saying I built a dashboard, say this dashboard helped my team save 1 million per month, actually 2 million per month because we are able to identify metrics and revenue impact faster. Number two, learn how to navigate your manager's management style. For example, in my 101s, I consistently ask my manager, "What are some of the biggest challenges right now and how can I help? " Then I take that back and figure out how basically I can help. This is literally the definition of managing up. So, and this is exactly what I mean about dictation with whisper flow. I am speaking naturally, correcting myself, challenging details, and it still understands. Like when I said 1 million instead of 2 million, it corrected automatically. In Siri, I would have to edit it out manually, which honestly defeats the purpose. And if you look at the formatting, Whisper Flow actually did a really good job formatting. It created a list. And honestly, I love love using this tool. Whisper Flow is actually free to try and if you use the link in description below and promo codes at checkout, you will actually get an extra month of Whisper Flow Pro for free. All right, now let's talk about

Truth #3: Office housework trap

lesson number three. This is another one that I learned the hard way. Office housework feels good, but it's actually not good. Earlier in my career, I actually did a lot of office housework. One time, I organized an happy hour for 40 people. It took a lot of time, planning, coordination, following up at the event. People loved it. I got so many praises. But when the annual review season came around, none of that actually mattered. I was stackrant purely on my core data scientist work. And this is the reality. This is when I learned that the office housework feels good in the moment, but it does not pay off in your career. After that, I stopped doing office housework. If I did have spare time, I would use that to do some core data science work that I could essentially add to my performance review or to my resume. So, be strategic. Yes, if you enjoy office housework and it brings you joy, just do it for that sake, but don't expect anything in return that you will get better rating or more compensation or like more bonus at the end of the year because you did that. Office housework is just office

Truth #4: Non-technical manager risk

housework. Number four, non-technical manager can stall your career. Again, another hard learning. When I started my career as a data engineer, my manager at that time was a ex data engineer and I got promoted in that role really fast. Later, as a data scientist, I worked under both technical and non-technical manager. And my next promotion happened under a manager who had been a data scientist himself. But my third manager was a different story and my third promo was a different story. That manager was not technical. He did not understand data science. Every project update meant I had to teach him my work so he could go explain it to his manager. And when promotion time came, another manager objected to one of my projects. And my manager wasn't able to defend it. Not because he did not want to, but understand my work. And that promotion did not happen. If you are in a technical role, your manager needs to be technical enough to advocate for you in rooms you are not present in. Let me know if something like that has happened to you and if you disagree with this

Truth #5: Support roles have limits

learning number five, support roles have limits. There was a specific moment when this really hit me. I found out that a project my team had been working on all year was being dep prioritized. No discussion, no debate. We were just told to shift focus. I was not part of the meeting where this decision was happened. We were just informed after the fact. This is when I realized something uncomfortable. As a data scientist, I was pulled in after the road map was actually decided. The OKRs were set. The direction was locked. My job was to execute, not defined. Data scientists, data analysts, MLOps, even data engineers, these roles are often support roles by default. These are critical, but they are not always decision-making roles. Once I understood that, I stopped being confused about my growth. I started being intentional about my career. So, take a step back and try to see if your role that you currently work in is considered a support role in how you can turn this into a decision-making role. Learning

Truth #6: Career ceilings are real

number six, career ceilings are real. When I started my career as a data analyst intern, I was just excited to be in tech. But pretty early on, I noticed something. None of the VPs at my company had ever been a data analyst. They were engineers or product managers. At first, I ignored it. Later, I understood what it meant. If people with your title never make it to the leadership, that is not a coincidence. That is just the feeling. Number seven, you cannot avoid

Truth #7: You cannot avoid this

corporate politics. For a long time, I thought I could avoid politics. I hate them. I believed if I just put my head down, did the work, everything would be okay. So, I stayed quiet. I focused on execution and what happened was nothing. Decisions were still made without me. Promotions were still discussed in rooms I was not in. Avoiding politics did not make me neutral. It made me invisible. You do not have to play the corporate politics, but you have to understand how to navigate the corporate politics. Definitely can talk about this in another video in more detail. Let me know in comments. Learning number eight

Truth #8: Is your promotion worth it?

not every promotion is worth it. As you get more senior, promotions become more difficult. Sometimes they take years. My colleagues and I literally joke that you need a full year of road show, 12 months of presentation, reminders, and visibility on top of your actual job. So, if we do the math, 12 months of promo work for a 10% raise, or you could do 3 months of interviewing for a higher level role and 30% pay bump. That's when I realized that not every promotion is worth it. Time is also a cost factor. So you should definitely take that into consideration. Let me know your thoughts on this and if you agree. Number nine

Truth #9: It is just business

it is business. You do not have to stay. This realization came when I saw a manager get laid off. He had been at the company for 19 years. 19 years. That's a lot of time. But one day he just woke up and he was told that he no longer works at the company. when the decision to lay him off was basically made, he was just a number on a spreadsheet. That was the moment I understood it's just business. You do not owe loyalty to a company that will not offer it back to you. Number 10

Truth #10: What actually brings peace of mind

multiple streams of income bring peace of mind. When layoff started, I was terrified. Mortgage, kids, health insurance. If I lost my job, we could not survive on my husband's income alone. Around that time, I started creating content. Over time, I turned it into a scalable business. That second stream of income changed everything. I do not have nightmares about getting laid off anymore. And it makes me so sad that I'm saying this. My teammates actually joke that you make fu money, so if you get laid off, you will be fine. Honestly, I do not find that funny because I don't want to lose my job. But in the worst case scenario, if I do lose my job, I do have another stream of income. And knowing that just brings me peace of mind. All right, these were my

10 lessons and 10 harsh realities that I've learned over the last 12 years in tech. Let me know if any of these resonate with you and if there's any other lesson that you would add to the list, let me know in comments below. And with that, I hope you're having a beautiful day. I will see you in the next video. Have a good one. Bye.
