In this video, I respond to criticism about AP® Business with Personal Finance and explain why I think it could be one of the most useful AP classes students can take. Students learn real-world skills like entrepreneurship, marketing, leadership, investing, budgeting, and personal finance while exploring possible career paths. Whether students go to college or not, these are skills they can use for the rest of their lives. #APBusiness #APBusinessWithPersonalFinance #APClasses #Entrepreneurship #PersonalFinance #FinancialLiteracy #BusinessStudents

Segment 1 (00:00 - 03:00)

This is a tutor named Joey Lynn and he recently made a video crapping all over AP Business with personal finance. — College Board looked around the world and said, "You know what would fix financial literacy? " A 3-hour exam. The College Board is rolling out AP Business with personal finance because apparently teenagers need a standardized test about credit cards. Nothing screams corporate readiness like bubbling in answers about supply and demand while Desmos judges you. — So, now let's talk about how this might impact a student who wants to be a business major. So, up until now business-interested students already take classes like AP Econ, they should take AP Calculus, they often times take AP Stats. Those are classes that business schools rely on because they show rigor and critical thinking and quantitative abilities. But this new AP feels like College Board saw some TikTok financial influencers and said, "Hmm, we should standardize that. " And so, here's my take on it. Colleges are not suddenly going to admit you because you took and passed AP Business. No admissions officer is leaning back and thinking, "Finally, a teenager who understands amortization schedules. " With all due respect, Mr. Lynn, you are wrong. AP classes are not about just padding students' applications for college. They're about giving students a taste of college in high school so they can decide what they actually want to study. And frankly, the whole idea that every student has to go to college is ivory tower horse crap, especially given how much AI is affecting white-collar jobs. Students no longer just need a diploma, they need skills. And whether they go to college or not, AP Business with Personal Finance will give them skills that they'll use for their entire life. There's going to be a lot of students that take this class that want to study business in college. They're going to take the class, love it, they're going to succeed, do great, get their MBA, and start huge, amazing businesses someday. Then there's going to be other students who think they want to study business in college, take AP Business, realize it's not for them, and switch to some other major instead, which is great. They didn't have to spend a lot of money to figure out what they don't want to do. Then there's going to be some students who aren't even planning on going to college, but they'll take AP Business, love it, realize that's something they want to pursue. So, maybe they'll go after college, get an MBA, and do some amazing things as well. And lastly, there'll be a group of students who want to study business in college, take AP business, realize they don't have to spend a bunch of money on college to become an entrepreneur. Either way, all these students will walk away with skills they'll use for the rest of their lives. And you want to deny students this because the course is ran by the College Board? Because there's a standardized test at the end? Hmm, we should standardize that. AP courses are awesome partially because they're standardized. They hold students and teachers to a higher standard that everyone can see, that's measured. And AP teachers are usually some of the most passionate, motivated, and knowledgeable teachers in the building. Mr. Lynn, I think you should actually look at the curriculum of this course instead of just judging it based on what you think it's about. For some reason, you're just focusing on the personal finance part. You have to remember it's also a business 101 class, the first business class that all students take at any business program. If that has any value, then this class has value. But on top of that, students also get personal finance. I don't understand why you don't think this is valuable. If you honestly think it's not worth it because it doesn't help students get into college, I think you should look at your priorities and the actual purpose of education.
