Feeding a toddler is rarely as simple as it sounds. Some days they eat everything. Other days they refuse even their favorite food. If you are dealing with mealtime tantrums, this is more common than you think. Let's look at a few ways to handle it calmly and make mealtimes easier for both of you. How to handle mealtime tantrums. One, stick to a routine. Children feel secure when they know what to expect. Try to serve meals and snacks at the same time each day. Avoid constant snacking in between. Have meal together with your child as a full family. When children see others are also having the same meal, they will be encouraged, too. Two, offer choices. Instead of asking, "Do you want to eat this? " try offering simple choices. For example, "Would you like rice or roti? Do you want apples or bananas? " This gives your toddler a sense of control while you still decide what options are available. Three, keep portions small. Start with small servings. If they are still hungry, they will ask for more. This builds confidence and reduces resistance. Four, stay calm during tantrums. If your toddler throws food or cries, try to stay calm. Reacting strongly can turn it into a habit because they get attention from it. Instead, respond in a steady voice. "Food stays on the table. If you throw it, mealtime is over. " Then follow through without anger. Five, make mealtime enjoyable. Talk to your child. Share simple stories. Avoid distractions like phones or television. When mealtime feels relaxed and positive, children are more open to trying new foods. Six, accept mess and exploration. Toddlers learn through touch. They may squish, smell, or play with food before tasting it. This is normal. Seven, be patient with new foods. A child may need to see a new food many times before trying it. Keep offering it in small amounts without pressure. Even if they refuse today, they might accept it next week. Feeding a toddler is not about perfection. Some days they will eat well, other days not so much. What matters is consistency, patience, and a calm approach.
