Segment 1 (00:00 - 03:00)

I'm working on a game where you play as a virtual referee. It's called Eye of the Match. And the moment I announced the game, one comment kept popping up everywhere. I'm going to benefit the hell out of insert favorite team. That told me something really important. People want their club represented in the game. Problem is, there are thousands of football clubs around the world. So, I needed a system that could represent a huge number of teams without manually designing every single one. To solve this, I relied on one of game development's most ancient techniques, RGB channels. Let me explain. If you look at football jerseys across the world, you start noticing the same patterns repeated. Solid colors, vertical and horizontal stripes, halves, diagonals, and so on. And most clubs only use two or three main colors. So, with a relatively small set of patterns and a flexible color system, it becomes possible to recreate the feel of most football kits. That's where RGB comes in. You see, RGB stands for red, green, and blue, the color model used by digital displays. But RGB can also be used as a way to store information inside an image. Each color channel can be isolated and replaced independently. So instead of creating every jersey individually, I create the patterns using only pure red, green, and blue values. Then each team simply defines which pattern it uses and which colors should replace the RGB channels. That means one single texture can generate countless variations. And the results are much better than I expected. The same idea also works for the team emblems. With a small library of simple icon patterns and color combinations, I can generate simple images that loosely represent real football crests. All of this gets me one step closer to my goal, making players feel connected to the matches they're refereeing. One idea I'm currently exploring is having a team localization system where the clubs you referee are loosely inspired by teams from a set of regions that you can select. But realistically, it's impossible to represent every club out there. And even if a region is included, the team you support might not be. That's exactly why I'm also planning to have full league customization. I want players to be able to recreate their favorite teams or just to invent completely new ones from scratch. All the power goes to you. All of this is really meaningful to me because one of the reasons I became a game developer is that as a kid, I used to modify ProEvolution soccer files just to create custom jerseys and fake clubs just for fun. From a gameplay perspective, it also creates some really interesting situations because if your favorite club exists in the game, how exactly will you react when you have to make a refereeing decision that goes against them? I'm currently working hard to make Eye of the Match a great experience, and the best way to support its development is by wishlisting it on Steam. I cannot wait to share more about the game's development, the future demo, and eventually the release date. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you in the next one.
