*** Slow Russian Podcast Transcript and audio download for $20 – https://russian.fromzerotofluency.com/courses/slowrussian Join my free email course with A LOT of useful materials for self-learning – http://realrussianclub.com/subscribe My premium step-by-step course for Russian language learners – https://russian.fromzerotofluency.com/ Get all three levels together and save $102 – https://russian.fromzerotofluency.com/bundles/all-of-from-zero-to-fluency UNDERSTANDING RUSSIA (new cultural course, no knowledge of Russian language required)– https://russian.fromzerotofluency.com/courses/understanding-russia

Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00)

Hello everyone. Welcome to episode number 110 of the SlowRussian Language Podcast and happy belated Halloween. I really wanted to record this episode because it's one of my favorite songs ever. Uh so even if it's a couple days later, I decided I'll do it anyway. So this is the song. This is Halloween. You probably know this if you live somewhere in the west at the Halloween blah blah blah. Yeah. So today we're going to learn the song from Nightmare Before Christmas in Russian. As always, first we translate everything and then at the very end instead of the outro, I will play the entire song so you can enjoy it in Russian. Here we go. The name of the song obviously is Halloween. This is Halloween. So the first sentence it means kids of different ages and uh a short um kind of thing before we start properly. Uh it has nothing to do with the original English text. Okay? Because Russian is so different from English. You just can't use the same words in Russian to fit into the rhythm, melody. Uh just super simple example, bat in English, bat, the you know the flying animal bat in Russian. So imagine trying to squeeze the word in something super short um like bat to match the music. So no, no. In Russian is completely different. So don't be surprised when you hear the translation. Okay. So, children of different ages means age. My age is 35 years old. age. It's time to leave uh your I don't want to say parents' house. Uh but kind of your home sweet home comes from the word at father meaning the house where you're growing up. Okay, we have only one path. Now, only one road. Put is usually the trail road path. Putin. We have only one path to the kingdom of Halloween. You probably know the word king. So the kingdom Halloween. And then we have the chorus Halloween. Halloween means pumpkins. So one pumpkin would be Halloween. That pumpkin is a symbol of Halloween symbol means dancing. Pumpkins are dancing uh among ruins. Ruins is the synonym of we could easily say but again for the sake of the melody we have to use. And again Halloween you are alone means death around you means death obviously means around you so this is Halloween death all over the place and you are alone happy end. Interesting word. Uh so happy end obviously means happy end. Happy end is unimaginable. I love this word. So It's like scary terrifying

Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00)

unimaginable. It's like scary terrifying fear. Halloween. You are alone in the kingdom of Halloween. And then different characters come up and they start um each of them starts to introduce themselves. So the first one says I am the bloodthirsty nightmare under the bed. You might know the word blood. So kind of greedy for blood literally Kashmar nightmare. So the cartoon itself is called Nightmare Before Christmas. So here is a nightmare under the bed. But they don't use the word they use the word in instrumental case. We have the ending oi again just to rhyme with the next line. Uh by the way so far listen how everything rhymes. I'll read from the beginning. Halloween. So you see it's all rhyming. It's all rhyming. You will hear it in the song. Okay. So, uh, bloodthirsty nightmare under the bed. Zubasti like with lots of teeth. Zubie, zubi teeth. So, zubasti is somebody who has teeth and usually like sharp teeth. Zubasti. Glazi. What do you think that means? Zubasti. Glazi. So, if you know the word eyes, glaz. So it's again somebody who has either big eyes or a lot of eyes. Sabo means kind of in itself in oneself. So it means scary in itself kind of on his own. The next character says I'm hiding under the stairs during the day. stairs in Russian is and I'm crawling out in the darkness like a spider in Russian spider is and then again at the Halloween at Halloween and then they say g dream like dream city, smoke city, Halloween. This we had many times before in the previous episodes and it means under the name the Halloween. Then the mayor of the city comes and says, "We always want a guest. " that. So it's kind of um word order is different. So the full sentence very difficult even in Russian. So it means we always want to surprise our guest. So we will surprise him up till his gray hair. So the surprise will be so intense that he will basically his hair will turn gray. In Russian means gray hair. So this when you get older or for other different reasons you can have gray hair. The adjective it would be like look at this old man. He's all grayhaired. is an interesting Slavic word. Uh, a lot of Slavic languages have the same character. It's kind of like a zombie, but obviously in the old times we never had the word zombie. Uh, this one dates back hundreds of years ago. So is yeah, undead. Again, we have the word all around us.

Segment 3 (10:00 - 15:00)

in every park behind the corner that prepositional case. So in every park behind every corner uh it's waiting for you some like somebody's like ugly but not ugly as a person is more like some ugly creature but also the adjective basically just means ugly like look at this couch it's so ugly. Um, so yeah, it's gnome. Gnome in Russian is the gnome. Uh, yeah, the ones who are again kind of evil gnomes, not somebody nice like Gimly from Lord of the Rings or something like that. Obviously not. Okay. So then again, Gorat Halloween, the city of Halloween is Grain. So from the coffins group grape group in Russian the one that people are buried in group coffin um is tina I don't know this word in English uh it's something like I don't know like the marsh type of thing yeah some smelly with some bad water that and then the werewolf comes out and says aren't you scared never you'll say it once, you'll say it twice. And the head falls off the shoulders. Galava galava. is the expression uh a lot of what is Ellis Alice in Wonderland the queen always says meaning kind of take his head off okay is the very funny slang word meaning to have fun to party but I don't even know how to explain it it's complete slang so She won't go away without having this fun. Will scream, will roarim Halloween in the kingdom of Halloween. Then the clown comes out and says clone. I am an evil clown. Clone with an empty head. Bashko. Bashka is the word for galava head. The bashka. But it's a little more I don't know rude option. Bashka. Especially when you say empty head when you call somebody dumb. Empty head. seems like I'm funny and cheerful but in reality I am neither of that right okay then the voice comes so who's here what do you mean who that's just me cold in your chest. Your paranoia. Okay. Then the oogie comes and says, "I'll arise like a shadow in the moon. Like a bat, I'll fly into your dreams. And again, you see bat. Super long word. Literally means flying mouse. And then again, Halloween. Halloween. Okay. And then the kids are singing There is barely more uh fun uh than to give the uh heart attack to your

Segment 4 (15:00 - 20:00)

victim. Infarit means to give something as a gift is a victim. So after we usually use dative case for example Here they're bringing heart attack to a victim. So uh then the funny part comes because it has nothing to do with the English translation. It uh is the line from a very popular Russian song from '9s and I think in early 2000s it was very popular. We had this TV series about policemen. It was called um And there was this line, our job is dangerous and difficult. So here they use this line just because everybody in Russia back then knew this phrase. So they're kind of playing around with it. Our work here it's dangerous and difficult. So the original song is blah blah very cool song. So here they use it in this translation uh and the melody would be like so it's kind of the same line but obviously different melody. Okay. So every time it's basically the synonym of same thing. So every time is the first time we will uh we guarantee to send you into the like fainting is when you faint and fall. Yeah. when you kind of black out and fall down. So we will send you into this stage. Okay. Then Jack Skellington appears and everybody's singing. This one I'm not even sure how to translate. So scary Jack that Jack is this mixture of I don't know like not just scary but something mysterious um yeah giving you chills so he will run I don't know how to translate it it's something when you kind of prepare for the jump you know in sports uh like those jumpers with a stick I forgot how you call it in So when you run at first kind of to gain some speed and then you jump. So this is what is. So I'm not sure what they mean here. So I guess he will run prepare like that and then he jumps on you. And he will fall over your head like the first snow. And then again at Halloween the torches are lit. Yeah. Fil in Russian is a torch. The time has come for the main character of the show. Okay. Then moving on. You see here, I even printed it out for me. Printed it a little text. Okay. Um, so the ghost Jack, even though he's not even a ghost, but again, they couldn't rhyme the word skeleton here, I guess. So, they use the word pra. Pra is the phantom. The ghost. Pra, for example, phantom of the opra. Prairie. Phantom. So he puts the show up many years. Salute Jack kind of. Hey Jack. Salute. Salute Jack. The master of pumpkins. In English they call him the pumpkin king. So pil is the ruler. The ruler kind of the ruler. The master of pumpkins and again hello and blah blah. This is my and yours uh home

Segment 5 (20:00 - 25:00)

again. this kind of home sweet home for our wonderful motherland is the expression in Russian. It's um expression that means that you would do anything for this voy literally means to jump into deep waters with your head. Right? M is usually this dark water, unknown, deep, and you're ready to jump there. Yeah. To dive into this water for someone or something. So here for their beloved Halloween Town, that's the expression. And then this. So yeah, that is the end of the song. I hope now you can open the text in the description. Don't forget that every episode has a little text box and I put the lyrics there in Russian and usually in English, but this one I don't think you need the translation because you probably know this song. It is extremely popular, uh especially in the United States, in Canada, in Great Britain, uh where most of my listeners are coming. I checked the other day and I think more than 85% are from these three countries. So, I guess you're familiar with the song anyway. Uh, okay. So, yeah, please check out the description. And before you listen to the song, remember that I invite you to my courses to learn Russian with me. I use my favorite TPS method using many stories using a lot of funny examples. And uh, if you are more old school like I am, if you don't like short lessons like 3 minute lesson, I don't get it. I don't care about this type of learning. I like long lessons when I open my notebook, when I sit down and I write stuff and I speak uh with the teacher out loud and I feel like I did something, you know, kind of like a workout. So yeah, I believe in long format. I don't believe in short lessons. Uh so if you believe in that like I do, I invite you to my courses. That would be wonderful to see you there. Uh the links are all in the description together with the lyrics. And that's it for today. I stopped talking now. Enjoy the song and thank you very much for listening. I hope to see you in the next episode of the Slow Russian Language Podcast. Bye-bye. Gor Halloween. The Halloween can't be We both snore. for paranoid. to TV. And that Halloween. foreign.
