Sam Raubin, Lead Mechanical Engineer at Practical Engineering, shares his journey over the past seven years, from focusing on structural mechanical designs to stepping into a leadership role. Since earning his RPEQ certification, Sam has taken on more responsibility, including supervising projects and mentoring junior engineers. One of his favourite parts of the job is coaching the next generation—not just on technical skills, but also on how to communicate clearly, write professionally, and present themselves confidently to clients. Sam’s passion for engineering started early, inspired by his dad (also an engineer) and a childhood love of LEGO. With a clear path from school to university and straight into the field, Sam hasn’t looked back and he calls it an incredibly rewarding career. #MechanicalEngineering #Leadership #EngineeringCareers #PracticalEngineering #Mentorship

Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00)

Hi, my name is Sam. I'm one of the lead mechanical engineers here at Practical Engineering. I've been here for about seven years now and focusing on a lot of uh structural mechanical design. I got my RPQ a couple of years ago and have been sort of taking on some more responsibility with uh supervising other people's work as well as doing my own. One of the other parts to my job would be uh overseeing and coaching some of the more junior engineers. I became a lead here at practical engineering uh about a year ago now. And part of those responsibilities are coaching them and mentoring them in their technical ability as the supervising RPQ in their projects, but also how to come across more professional to clients, how to communicate clearly, how to write clearly in in uh report format. Um it's a whole range of how to coach someone professionally into becoming a more competent engineer. So that's been a really rewarding part of the role. Look, I think as a kid, most of us always loved to play with Lego and I think my dad was an engineer. So I think I always grew up with the understanding that I would I'd be an engineer as well. And I haven't regretted it for one second. I've always had that clarity and went straight from school to studying engineering at uni and basically started here straight after uni and it's been great ever since then. It really lends itself to my skill set and my interest. So, it's a really rewarding career.
