What is Opal?

Google just expanded one of its most underrated AI tools, Opel. If you haven't heard of it, Opel is a non-code builder that lets anyone create their own AI mini apps. Kind of like your own custom chat GPT, but made with Google's tech and Gemini. And now it's going global, moving just from 15 countries to more than 160. That means anyone anywhere can start building AI powered tools, whether you're an entrepreneur, marketer, a student, or just curious about AI. Today, we're going to break down exactly what OPAL is, why Google is betting big on it, and the kind of apps people are already building, and what this global rollout actually means for the future of AI created apps. Opel lives under Google Labs, which is Google's experimental space for new ideas. The basic idea is simple. You describe what you want an app to do and Opel builds it. You don't have to write any code. You just type, for example, make an app that summarizes documents and saves the results to Google sheet. And Opal will turn that into a working mini app. It kind of gives you a visual workflow showing each step, input, model call, and output so you can adjust it as you go. So in practice, Opel is less about writing code and more about connecting logic. You're designing how things flow rather than how they're actually written. Google has few clear reasons for building this. Over the past year, AI tools like ChatGpt and Gemini have made it easier to use AI, but building with AI has still required some technical background. Opel kind of fills that gap. It's for people who have ideas, but not necessarily the coding skills to build them. It also fits into Google's larger strategy of making AI practical for everyone. Notebook LM is for organizing ideas. Gemini is for conversation and reasoning and Opel is for creating small sharable apps that do specific things. It's a way to turn everyday users into builders and put them into that Google ecosystem. Something that is exciting for Google to do, especially as we're gearing up for Gemini 3. 0. During the announcement, Google also mentioned that people have quickly moved away from building simple tools to automating complex tasks. For example, some are using Opel to streamline research. They would pull the data from websites, analyze it, and send the results straight into their own Google Sheets. Others have built apps that summarize data, and create quick visual reports. And some have created repeatable workflows, like updating a newsletter each week, checking contract versions, or planning meals automatically. In short, people are using Opel to get routine work out of the way. It's not really used for enterprise or commercial reasons, but more for day-to-day useful things. That's interesting because it shows that AI isn't just about generating text or images anymore. It's actually moving into workflow automation and making people's lives much easier and more convenient. All right, so let's take a

look at the Opel website. So when you land here, you have the option to create your new Opel app. Uh as you can see, it's an Opel experiment highlighting Google Labs. Then we also have this gallery here which is at the moment you can see Opel team's own custom items that they have put but you can play around search things but why don't we try to create our own custom app. So let's click on create new. We can take a look at uh the demo video if you want some ideas. But basically you put your input you generate it and then there's an output and then you can add couple of things and then whatever you build will be shown up here. So let's come up with an idea. What do we want to build? So I love working out and I love uh you know planning my workouts. So basically I want to create a gym training buddy app. So I want to tell it that I want you to create an app for me that allows me to plan my workouts as well gives me new workouts every day based on the routine I'm following. So let's just give it some brief prompts and let's see what it creates. Let's press enter. Okay. So you can see it already created something and you can see that first thing it asks the app has created is like describe your fitness level. Then it's going to target your muscle group. So you input what muscle groups you want to focus on. Then it asks the user what equipment they have which is I think is really cool. So, it's good that like you know the app is also thinking about the user's limitation and then the duration like how often or sorry how long you want to work out for and it's going to be able to generate a workout plan for that and it will display the workout routine. So, just to play around with it more, we can add assets. So, you can add like things that you want to include. It could be your logo or something like that, a video or whatever it could be that you think that is needed in your app. You can add that in here. So, let's test this app out. So, this is the preview mode. Looks like Oh, there's some things over here like the sidebar console. This is kind of cool. Like it explains what's happening over there. There's a theme. You can also Oh, okay. You know what? First, let's just start exploring the app. We'll mess around with that after. So, current fitness level, I will say I work out five times. weak. I want Okay, this is cool. So, it generated a workout for me. Uh, it's saying that my fitness level is experienced cuz I mentioned that I go five times a week. Uh, full body, pushable legs, approximately 1 hour. So, okay. So, it has a warm-up for me. Starting off with some jumping jacks, some warm ups like that. Then it's giving me a main workout. So, barbell back squats, then we go into bench press. Then we go to rows, overhead press, Romanian deadlift. So, not bad. Like, it's a pretty decent workout based on the input that I've given it. Now, it's also given me a cool down item for me to do after the workout, which I think is really cool. Uh, can I click on these things? I can't really do much on here. All right, let's go back to the editor. Uh, you can change the theme. you have that. Uh, we can also suggest an edit. I mean, it's not bad that I was able to create this within like 2 minutes. And I haven't even played around with it much. I could give it more edits if I wanted to change the theme to my liking. If I want to add more things like my logo and stuff, I could do that too as well. I can play around and add more prompts and like make the app much more extensive. But this is really sick because Google is letting you do this for free and you can share the app and you can publish it. You can use it for yourself. It doesn't even have to be published. And now it's available in more than 160 countries. So people that don't have access to engineers or have any coding background now have the ability to generate apps like this within couple of

minutes. Overall, Opel feels like an important step for Google to show that AI is becoming more usable for everyone. Not everyone wants to train a model or build a chatbot from scratch. Most people just want something that helps them work faster or test an idea quickly. and Opal kind of makes that possible. And with Gemini 3. 0 around the corner, this timing makes even more sense. Gemini 3. 0 is expected to bring major upgrades in reasoning, planning, and multimodal understanding, which means the AI powering Opel will only get smarter and more capable. So, as Gemini improves, the many apps people build in Opel will naturally get better, too. It'll become more accurate, more useful, and more connected to Google's ecosystem. You can also check it out at opal. google. com on google. com and start experimenting yourself. If you already used it, I'd love to hear what kind of ideas you've tried or what you want to build next. Until then, like the video if you enjoyed it, subscribe to the channel, and I'll see you next
