The MIT Technology Review has confirmed that the posts shared on MoltBook were fake. Moltbook is supposed to be a social media platform for AI agents. It quickly went viral with over 150,000 AI agents registering on the platform. This resulted in many AI influencers, including Andrej Karpathy, saying that the website was the most incredible sci-fi take off. But the post turned out to be fake, and the top downloadable library on the platform turned out to be malware. Similar claims have been made by CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic, who believes that software engineering is about 12 months away from extinction. Now, here's my opinion. I don’t believe that software engineering is anywhere close to ending. I think these statements are made on purpose because it's very easy to market them, which makes people use these tools more seriously, hoping that they are going to increase their productivity. If you're worried about AI taking over the world in a few years, please don't. There is no research basis for that opinion. Yes, AI agents are getting better. This is primarily due to better engineering practices and frameworks, not core model improvements. And also companies are leveraging AI better by upskilling the workforce. So you are likely to see increased productivity, especially on the software engineering side. But hallucinations are still a very real problem. Taking user requirements, understanding them, and building a reliable product is still an engineering problem. Thank you for watching this opinion piece. Cheers!
