Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00)

recognizing the emotions of others if we want to gain their truly respect wonderful all of you who are here watching I would love to have your answer uh if you would not uh mind typing in the chat what's the one seal skill one social emotional skill you would love to see these four young people and millions of young people learn to help them Thrive today and in the future and um one of the things for me is I know that from our research uh what we call at 6 seconds navigating emotions has gone down a lot uh since 2019 and I think the isolation from the pandemic a lot of complexity in world has made that skill go down but especially for younger people and I think that if people can navigate their emotions they can take ownership of their own feelings and they can set themselves up to uh to handle the complexity that's being thrown at them and I know um all of you and um all of the people working in this space I know we've all experienced a lot of complexity that we're dealing with in the world um and that can be really painful so um panelists um would you please sh a short story a moment sawal working where you saw like oh for myself or I saw somebody else when somebody practiced this here's what happened who wants to go first Jasper how about you oh go Wes raised your hand all right go for it um so I remember hearing on some podcast the 80,000 hours podcast on from a founder of a charity that them and their co-founder heavily disagreed on well not heavily but disagreed quite a bit on one decision and they slept on it for a day um so as for um I don't know I so as F was going to say something some tangent but I forgot I didn't have a tangent um uh and they resolved it pretty well so that's the best I have there thanks Wes sleep on it make better decisions someone else what's a moment that you experienced for yourself or that you saw Ana well since I was a child I was immersed in many competitions specific in dancing competitions and the first time I been to a competition I start feeling the symptoms of stress I start feeling nervous um maybe scared but I didn't have the strategies to manage it however when I started going more into more and more competitions I start discovering what strategies were effective to me for example to um talk with someone I have a lot of confidence to talk with my Mom to May we breathe and in that moment I use the selfawareness skills because I know that these emotions are not negative NE not positive they were uncomfortable but I start by the practice developing the strategies to deal with them effectively yeah and Jasper you talked about that grounding right and that maybe you could just explain what is uh I know you work with the clearning framework which focuses a lot on grounding what is that okay um so with grounding it's basically all about just recognizing how your body is feeling um so maybe you would like close your eyes and focus on how like normally You' be sitting maybe in a chair and it's like you know how does your body feel in your chair where's the positive emotions where's the neutral emotions whereas maybe the negative feelings and the whole purpose of it is to really bring you back to like a neutral state where you feel like your body is in like a comfortable zone so it's really all about recognizing how you're feeling all right quick check how's everybody's emotional state right now like so this is like totally chill and this is like a stress meter where are you right

Segment 3 (10:00 - 15:00)

now little bit okay awesome um seang you did a lot of pop-up festivals in Korea and I'm wondering what's something you noticed with when you started doing a pop-up festival with kids um so mostly I worked with the local Multicultural TR Center one thing for these kids most of them are come most of them come from low income families um in a very isolated area and outside of suburbs so often times they don't get much emotional support from their parents because they're busy working out all day and one thing I've notice is that younger kids it's really important for them sometimes like Multicultural kids they don't speak either of the language as well they should be bilinguals but because they're two language uh learn two languages at the same time it could be harder for them to express their emotions and really show them what they really want and that causes more problem because children but Multicultural kids in Korea is not as common and the states so they it could be um a little bit secluded inside the school from their teachers too so I think that's one point that really want to work with the kids of learning how to tell others of how they are feeling and how to manage that when they are not fluent in both languages yeah it's I can't imagine really trying to express my emotions in another language and I imagine like for Ana speaking English saying I know you've been speaking English for a long time but still I imagine it's different when you're speaking in your mother tongue completely agree all right well what's um what about now 2025 and you've all worked in lots of different places and spaces lots of different groups around the world in one of the spaces that you've worked why do you think these skills are especially important in that space or in this time go for it let's go Jasper and then Wes okay um for me I think that the skills really help because they help people in a very simple way um for example one like time when I was teaching these I taught art classes in Brazil to young kids in sou Pao and um the classes Incorporated elements of c and we also made like art projects that the kids could hold in hands and it was very focused on grounding like we were talking about um and the kids were really excited about the projects and the exercises helped a lot because of like the Simplicity of it um because I think that children don't need Super complex programs um and exercises to feel okay with themselves they just need to feel listen to and know how to listen to themselves and by being in touch with their emotions and bodies they can better communicate with the world around them which is one of the most important skills to have when they move forward wow yeah I think sometimes we kind of make it overly complicated right and like this is when we think about like let's get to Basics this is so basic like who am I what's going on for me who are you you Wes how about you um one thing that I've um noticed is it's very important that very important people um do these things and pra and don't make rash decisions or don't get too burnt out so they aren't productive because a rash decision or not being able to get some deadline done because you're too burnt out and didn't pay attention to your emotions and whatnot could negatively impact like a million people if you're a very important person uh especially in comparison to that of say an entire school um then that impacts the entire school and M and maybe the students parents yeah so people make decisions um that impact other people and some of those decisions have really big impacts and we would really love it if we all made more careful

Segment 4 (15:00 - 20:00)

choices especially when we're affecting lots and lots of people say young Ana what about you why is important um so in line with policy making I volunteer with an organization called B and breakfast it's basically a small local um organization in Evon near Chicago so I go there and mornings and read books and serve breakfast for kids in elementary school but unfortunately there was a big budget cut for local elementary schools in Edon so some schools are being shutting down um next year next school year and on and kids have to hear this devastating sad news and they have to change schools which is a big change um for them for kids in age seven or eight and it's really hard for kids and their parents are mad because they did not expect this to happen so I think social emotional skill is especially important these times when families are going through hard changes and they have to adjust to new environments and teachers and just the local community need to be aware of these um situations so that they can more work with the families going through this Anya I want to hear from you and also everybody in the chat could you please share one reason why you thinkal is particularly important in the place in the world where you are or in this time Anya why would you say well from my perspective I think the one um skill specifically the social awareness is really important now when young entrepreneurships are starting their business because if they want to do a effective and a successful business model they have to understand the client but not only know his age or his physical qualities they have to understand their emotions what are their difficulties what he is feeling why he is going to buy my product what emotion I am bringing with my value proposition now the value proposition have to have an competitive advantage and if we are able to develop emotion positive emotions to our clients we can assure we will have a success business okay so we're going everywhere from like Global policy to entrepreneurship to changes in our lives in our communities to just handling the dayto day there are so many reasons why we need and uh again all of you in the chat please share what's one reason you thinkal is important right now um I have uh a lot more questions I'd like to ask you all but before I get to my uh last question I just want to check do any of you uh Wes seang Ana Jasper is there anything you want to ask I didn't tell you I was going to ask you this question so it's go ahead Wes um is six seconds and other similar organizations aware of effective cism so I can only speak for six seconds one of the competencies that we measure and teach in this space is something we call pursue noble goals and what we found is that when people connect with purpose that's beyond themselves it has tremendous benefits for themselves as well I think just to be clear I mean the not effective altruism like the concept I mean the group of people and organizations sorry tell me more about effective altruism um effective altruism it's this um huge community of good doers trying to do the optimal amount of good using data and logic and whatnot um so for example some of the things they would do is they would um evalue valuate how much1 how much good one does for different charities in order to find the best charity to give money to um they saved approximately at least one billion animal lives and million human lives wow sounds like a cool way to use data and emotions together thanks Wes any anybody else have a question you want to

Segment 5 (20:00 - 25:00)

ask yeah Anya go for it um yeah I want to ask that um if you think that the social and emotional skills can help us achieve the inner development goals for those who aren't familiar are related to the sustainable development goals which I happen to have right here which is the um United Nations um compa act on what we really need in the world and the inner development goals are what has to happen on the inside for us to do those things and Anya I think yes I think that the what we learn in social emotional um learning programs is to make to be more clear to be more aware to tune in to make better decisions and I think all of the sustainable development goals ultimately will work or not work because of these skills anyone else have a thought on that they want to share well I have a question um to the panelists or the people who are watching um I was wondering about your opinions on if you could change one thing or Implement new policy or new program at schools regarding social emotional learning what would you change or new program into so folks um on the chat would you please answer that question for SE young if you could make one change or one policy in education that would make the impact ofal even greater what would you do and I think I have a kind of on the one hand I think every student should have seal classes but I actually think every teacher and every parent really needs training because I think we can't really create the value and impact ofal if we're not practicing it ourselves as Educators thanks fio for that anyone else have a thought on seong's question well if I could bring something new so where I come from in CA we don't have any SEO training or classes throughout Elementary School to high school we learned more than 2,000 hours of math which is very shocking from elementary to high school but we have zero hours of opportunities to really learn about our emotions and ourself so I think this is like one mission that I hold on to my life of having more kids to be to have to ch to social emotional um skills awesome there are a lot of interesting answers to this question coming in the chat Jasper go ahead um I completely agree um I think that yeah it would be really great if like skills were implemented more when kids were younger because sometimes when you just start learning something in like high school I don't know a lot of high schoolers like are like oh this is I don't know like not super cool or whatever um but if you like grow up implementing that in your life then it's just already kind of ingrained in how you carry yourself and move through the world so it's much easier to like really kind of in Grain it yeah Anya yes I totally agree with um Jasper I think that sometimes people think that young children are not facing a stress situations however they are also facing a stress situation as adults and help them to identify their thoughts then what emotions they are feeling and then take a good action is really an essential tool so they can become um leaders that manage their emotions and are successful all right well I want to wrap up this part of our panel by asking you to share with us what's one seal skill you're practicing for yourself right now uh something that you're maybe struggling with or maybe something you're enjoying what's an seal skill that that's currently um front and center for you seang you want to go first sure I'm really working on staying positive and there are lots of different

Segment 6 (25:00 - 30:00)

things going on um my school is on a quarter system most schools are on a semester system which means I have more classes quicker fast quicker School curriculum more exams so often times I could be just drown in school assignments and exams and not really open to the keys that others send listening to what others are going through so I think I'm trying to force myself to be engaged with the people around me and stay positive even that things may not flow in the way I expect it to be yeah and there's a lot of overwhelming things that make it hard thank you Sam Wes how about you what are you practicing um I try to practice sorry I zoomed in on the wrong thing ah no worries we can see you and here you don't see my thing but for me it's now all out of whack where is it can we come back to you in a sec yeah please do thank you sorry that's okay Anya what's something that you're practicing right now well um right now I am a starting University and I am trying to practice social awareness show empathy and understand the feelings of others because sometimes we struggle with some um topics with some topics especially Maths for example I have a friend that struggles with it and I try to help her and it's not the same way I teach to my friend of University that the way I can teach to my sister my little sister I have to identify that I have to acquire two different behaviors sometimes my my behavior pattern is to teach in a really fast way but my sister my little sister are is not going to understand in that way I have to change my way of Behaving thanks anyia all right Wes and Jasper let's get your quick answers and then we will wrap up go ahead okay sorry I might be cutting out a little I think my Wi-Fi is being weird um but yeah I'm practicing I think a lot of social awareness right now because it's a pretty stressful time i' say in Georgia right now as it is in a lot of the country and people are kind of on edge a lot and I just think it's really good to be observant and really just aware of how people are feeling so that we can just kind of get through um you know this kind of hard time right now thanks Jasper and Wes what are you practicing um I'm practicing self-management you know these days and for many other days um reading the news can definitely take its emotional toll so um I make an effort to get information and news without emotions biasing me or making me feel for lack of a better word distraught namely by using metaculus and ground news I like those sites for info and data thank you Wes well thank you uh young people um I wish that I had uh your level of emotional intelligence when I was your age I'm grateful for your being on today and um we didn't talk about this but all of you are Advocates your teachers you areal Educators you're out there in the world bringing seal skills to younger and other young people and thank you for that wonderful work and now we're going to turn over to some Ed Educators who are slightly older than you are AA uh is going to introduce our next panelists thank you so much Josh and youth leaders now we are going to have slightly older members um should I hide younger people now okay thank you so much J all right hello everyone this is ayaka from 6C social impact team um let's invite our adult SEO leaders here and please tell us about yourself briefly in 30 seconds please with one SEO skill that you think important right now and why start with Alexander my name is Alexander and uh I'm the inspirer of the atamp movement

Segment 7 (30:00 - 35:00)

for teachers professional development here in Ukraine I believe that the most important skill is attention in English we say pay attention because attention is the most valuable resource and the most expensive currency we all have I believe energy flows where attention goes so I'm choosing attention training thank you so much let's move on Rachel okay then basa please hi everyone thank you so much for having us my name is Bassam Naser hi can you hear me yes um let's go with Bassa for now I will come back to Rachel okay hi everyone so my name is Bassam Nasser um I work with UNICEF I'm an education specialist and I support SE the development of seal all over the world um I'm currently in Jordan um so my uh the most important uh seal uh skill that I think is important these days or one of them is critical thinking we are flooded with information from Left Right and center and I think to make informed decisions we need to be able to uh process this information in a critical way so that we are not duped and we make decisions that are uh beneficial for us and that are based on the truth and facts thank you rer can you unmute yourself he yeah can you hear me yes yeah okay so my internet is a little bit unstable so apologies for that in advance so hi I'm Rachel Cheesman and I am from The caran Institute for social and emotional learning in Barbados uh AAL skill that I think is very important right now is empathy um I believe empathy is the foundation for building relationships because I think the quality of our relationships really direct life so if we can lead with empathy every single time we're engaging someone we will essentially be able to make better connections communicate better and generally just make the spaces that we go into you know a better place okay thank you so much thank you okay let's move on several questions I'm going to ask several questions to each person um I want to start with Alexander I know you're doing a lot of Works in Ukraine could you please share one SEO moment in your work that you'd like to share and celebrate here sure with pleasure back in 2019 I had the honor of moderating the first ever meeting between his Holiness the Dal Lama and Ukrainian Educators I asked if he planned to write a book on education to my surprise he said that there was no need others had already done so he then introduced us to the social emotional and ethical learning program a curriculum developed at Amory University over 20 years today I feel like we are co-writing that book together with his Holiness the Emory team and Educators from 100 more countries bringing this free Castle program to real schools worldwide thank you okay what about Rachel because you're a lot you're doing a lot of EQ SEO activation in Caribbean area um yes so I can take my moment in the classroom so we have the privilege of engaging some students at one of our secondary schools here and there was this particular Young gentleman um uh his name is Joshua and I remember when we did the session on uh six seconds pause so we were teaching him a little bit about why we lose control of our emotions and we did a little bit on the brain and what's not so we went through the six seconds pause and you know he admitted that he struggles with his emotional regulation right he said you know I always lose control I always get angry you know he was constantly getting into trouble for that so you know after the session I was like so you're gonna be better this week so when I come back next week you'll be

Segment 8 (35:00 - 40:00)

able to tell me you know you were improving so I really wasn't expecting much in such in a week but when it came back the following week with the session he was so excited to tell me that he was able to really use the technique of deep breathing and counting to 10 um to be able to control his emotions and you know that was I because I didn't think that we were getting through so you know when you we when we get one of those feedbacks where was like okay yes it's actually working so that was a moment that I felt like okay this works you know we just need to get the information to the kids in a way that they will understand oh thank you so much um for the a audience please join us in the comments like what moment when you really stole the value of seal if I may share my story from last year um so I have my organization in Japan da jobu and we did a huge SEO Festival which is Popa Festival in Japan and there was um we have several youth leaders facilitators and one of them 12 years old boy fating the space and then one dad came with his son and he said like do it show me how you do it to his son and he started walking on it but our facit 12 years old fac didn't miss that he was a little demanding to his son so he said like why don't you join us and he involved that into our communication and activity and then that was really insightful moment that had some difficulty of oh I cannot find my answer adults needs is a skill so I was like really good job Tak well our 12 years old little um amazing facilitator Dau okay um yeah please join us in comments and let's move on next question I'm going to ask you basa what's one reason SEO is particularly important in now 2025 and Europe work in many places in the world so pick up one maybe particular in your current region Jordan so as so I I have the fortunate and unfortunate task of having a global picture of the status of global educ ation in the global world and I'm also Palestinian I'm also the father of two young boys so this intersects very nicely with uh strong forces that lead me to believe in the power ofcl but I think there are three Global trajectories that are really forcing us to need seal one of them is we are seeing uh increased Global uh violent conflicts all over the world one of them right next to me in Palestine what we see in Gaza we are seeing the devastating effects of climate change all over the world and we are seeing the disruption in the lives of people as a result of new technologies and Ai and and all these trajectories seem to be growing and moving towards uh getting more disruptive uh to the lives of children and young people and their education so navigating this world new world of uncertainty uh whether it is through jobs or whether through your education interrupted will require the the only skills or set of skills that I think will maintain us uh being able to sort of connect with our humanity and with our fellow humans our social emotional uh skills and so I think uh this is an extreme uh time import important time for us to be really focusing on these skills and building those in skills because the reality is uh there will be they will be needed for young people and adults as well to be able to manage and navigate their new reality thank you what about you Alexander well let me start with a personal story um today when we celebrate an SL day on March 3D but years ago my family and I like many ukrainians were fleeing our homes in search for safy driving with my wife two young daughters our dog and our cat we had no idea where we would find the shelter I will never forget the atam community our family of Educators who open their doors to us Beyond teaching the sheltered family supported our military they volunteered

Segment 9 (40:00 - 45:00)

selflessly this is a powerful example of why is essential in times of crisises 1,000 days of full scale War here in Ukraine that actually began over 10 years ago in my opinion have shown how vital human values are for me is about understanding what it truly means to be human how we connect how we care how we grow together wow that was so touching um yes like as I heard you say like SEO is a huge tool that supporting us in the moment really difficult for each person and everyone and this is a tool that we can use mutually and if we all exercise this skill then we can change our whatever we do the next action and we can make a better place a Kinder place I think thank you so much for sharing um what about Rachel um what's one reason is no what what's one no sorry next question I want to go what a moment when you sell the importance of seal uh I would have to say I see its importance every single day to be honest um in my own life in the spaces that I occupy you know with the people that I engage with you know people are hurting and it shows um so I think that it's important because for me when I interact with people who may be exhibiting you know a challenging Behavior attitude in that moment in time um I always go back to as I said empathy I think empathy is very important when you're engaging and with the knowledge that everyone has something happening you know within their lives that you don't know about so you just need to be empathetic you need to respond with curiosity and not judgment so I think that I see it every day the need to remember that we are all pretty much going through the same we're living the same life just in different parts of the world you know our strugg may be different but essentially we all still have struggles and it's part it's important for us to remember that yeah and then like last not last session like the previous part like Ana said that younger children are stressed too like we all have like some issues inside and we don't show but we all have something inside and we can be noticed that with SE skill I think yeah thank you so much okay I think I want to hear from basa what's ancl skill you are working on for yourself currently and how are you practicing that uh Rachel um if you notice my tagline I think empathy is essential but I think you've covered it uh well enough so I'm going to move to another one one uh that is about sort of uh uh self-management and self-regulation and I was so uh inspired by the young people before us um to hear their self-reflection on the world they're living in I don't think I was that type of young person I think they're exposed to much more right now so I think one of them talked about how they're feeling when they're reading the news um or seeing all the all what's happening in the world and being the father of two uh young boys who are going to be growing up in this world I really need to be able to manage the emotions and try to um feel a sense of purpose and hope and really regulate the emotions so that I am able to raise them but that I'm also able to function as a human being um so this is one skill and then you know being Palestinian as well um I see daily the killing of my people um and so I I hear Alexander when he's talking so I think we're going through very similar experiences so yes self-management and self-regulation and the ability of not blowing up uh literally in from inside and screaming every day I hope that wasn't too personal but I think this is this is the spirit of this conversation so I hope you uh you accept this uh this

Segment 10 (45:00 - 50:00)

answer of course the personal narrative is always the power the most powerful thing I think thank you what about you Alexander what's an SEO skill you walking now for yourself thanks for asking come well our Angel at Ukraine is not just introducing social motion and etical program but also advocating foral in our curriculum in the Professional Standards and as Ukraine's project manager for the oecd survey in Social and emotional skills which is the largest International effort research effort uh it focuses on 15 plus key life skills and I believe that compassion is the most vital one why because compassion is more than empathy it is action in Ukraine we give everything to help others and fight for the victory but self-compassion it is just as crucial because it sustains our care for others self love it is not narcissistic uh and only by being kind to ourselves can we truly support those who are around us thank you okay what about Rachel the skill that you're working on right now yeah I am working on my optimism um very similar to the one of the young ladies that spoke before us um you know I sometimes get overwhelmed with life and the challenges that can come with that um so I'm working on you know shifting my mindset to focus more on possibil as opposed to the limitations and struggles that I may see in front of me you know and to do that I just um you know practice celebrating small wind I use a lot of prayer space thank you internet was went a little unstable but thank you so much for sharing if I share I noticed yeah um if I share mine I would say self-awareness but with feelings like I was I thought I was doing whatever I like usually I do what I like to do but sometime I thought well this month I not this month this Mar just started well February I just realized that I'm not carrying my feelings I thought I was doing self-care but that self the definition of self-care was not caring but to be productive so I recently trying to know like what makes me happy what makes me feel cared well yeah that's my what I'm doing right now for EXO okay we covered a lot of things today let's move on closing what just one point you hope people will take action about next week from this session starting from basa sure so I will have a very practical uh answer I really and this is a message for uh mostly Educators and education policies UNICEF works on working with governments and systems and I think schools need to prioritize social emotional learning or what we sometimes at UNICEF called life skills or transferal skills and really prioritize them within curriculum but also within teacher practice as well as their assessment I think right now more than ever for many of the reasons we've mentioned today we need to focus on these and even at the expense of what we call traditional subjects I feel those subjects can be learned through multidisiplinary ways but if we keep our eye on the ball in terms of what keeps us human and what connects us as a Humanity I have a bit more hope for the world that we're heading into thank you what about you Rachel um I don't want to add anything I think J I think sorry um basam said it perfectly I 100% Endor his message I really think that that's what I hope people walk away with the knowledge that this is necessary for us to make the world a better place for us to be able to manage all of the distress and the Discord that we're seeing in the world

Segment 11 (50:00 - 53:00)
