I'm a psychologist and here are three ways that past trauma makes you push people away even when you love them. Number one is difficulty trusting. When you expect betrayal or rejection, you look for it at every turn. Intimacy feels dangerous, so you keep them at arms length and in doing so push them away. The whole thing becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Number two, fear of abandonment. Either you over control or become overly permissive, desperate to make them stay. But that kills genuine connection because they never fully know you. You just become what you think they want you to be. And number three, emotional numbing. You can't selectively numb emotions. So, if you're trying to block out the pain of the past, you will also numb all the feelings that you want to have, including love.
