Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00)

- You may have gotten wind, the turbines like these are killing all the birds, so wind power's bad, but how accurate is that? Yes, wind turbine collisions account for somewhere between 140,000 to around 680,000 bird deaths each year. Mainly small migrating songbirds. And that's why the people who plan where wind turbines go work to study and avoid bird migration roots, sometimes even turn off wind turbines during peak migration times. Okay, that's not nothing but those wind turbine numbers pale in comparison to how many other bird deaths we are responsible for. Around 6 million birds crash into communication towers like the ones your phone's talking to you right now. These towers are tall. They shine lights in the night sky, which can disorient songbirds traveling at night. And up to 50 million birds get tangled in overhead electricity lines each year, with about 5 million getting electrocuted by 'em. About 72 million birds get poisoned each year by things like pesticides we use to protect our crops, or lead poisoning from spent ammunition, swallowed by scavenger birds feeding on carcasses. And more than a billion birds die every year from crashing into big glass buildings or household windows or other confusing glass things we keep putting everywhere. I guess it's clear, you know, what do you expect? But you know who the real killers are,? Domesticated cats. Yes, more than 3 billion birds, billion with a b, get killed by household kitties or feral cats every year. That's almost one feline bird murder for every two humans on Earth. "Not my cat," I hear you saying. And to that I say, "Yes. " Even your cat. Cute, but also deadly murder machines. Anything that kills wild birds is not good. But it seems like if you want to save the most birds, maybe we should be talking about cats instead. Don't ask me though, I'm a dog guy. Follow me for more cool science videos.
