I'm going to smash the sapphire, not because I'm crazy, but in order to prove a point. Someone tried selling me the sapphire as a natural, but it turns out it was a synthetic. Here's how I was able to tell and how you could tell at home using just basic equipment. In this particular case, it was pretty easy to figure out because it is a flame fusion sapphire. So, all you have to do is diffuse the light and looked for curved stry inclusions. That's the little curved bands that you see within the stone under diffused light. If you see straight lines, on the other hand, like in this sapphire, that means it's actually natural and you're good to go. Curved bad.
