I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :) I have accepted that I will forever be a lazy person so have since decided to embrace that. My motto is to always minimize effort and maximize outcome! ______________________________________________________________________ Contact youtube: youtube comments are by far the best way to get a response from me! linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tinaw-h/ (second preferred but I might suck at responding) email: hellotinah@gmail.com *If you're reaching out through linkedin or email, please leave a youtube comment just letting me know that you reached out :) ______________________________________________________________________ *The StrataScratch affiliate program gives me a small portion of the sales price at no cost to you. :)

<Untitled Chapter 1>

i go and hide my phone for myself and all forms of distraction i take this physical timer everywhere i go don't be like 17 year old to 21 year old tina and then you finally realize that you don't really want to be a doctor and that you would be a terrible doctor and you're like a graduating senior you don't know what to do with your life so then you have an existential crisis yeah i cannot believe that we've reached 10k words seriously can't describe how happy i am that you guys are here so i figured i would do something special for you guys grab a seat and enjoy i was like thinking i should cook something so what should i cook for you guys and after considerable thought i would bake a cake i feel like i need to make a disclaimer so i'm a very asian person and generally i use my oven as either a drying rack or a cat rack and i think i've baked like five times in my life so this is how much i love you guys i'm risking setting my entire apartment on fire all right so today's cake is going to be a simple chocolate cake and that is also the perfect transition for advice number one baby steps don't be afraid to start something you haven't done before and try to set yourself up for success by doing something small first for example i have no idea how to bake a cake so i chose something relatively simple and i figured i might as well do something just a little bit different and add some chocolate because chocolate makes everything better and if i don't burn down the whole kitchen maybe next time i will feel more confident and i will try to bake this cap cake if you've watched my other videos about how to learn math or also like how to learn data science you will know that this is also the way that i get myself to learn stuff

Advice Number Two Is To Learn To Understand Yourself

baby steps my advice number two is to learn to understand yourself and this one took me so long to figure out i would often watch people have like seemingly perfect morning routines and they're just like super organized and have their life together meanwhile i can't even find matching socks like literally every single morning it takes me five to ten minutes just to find socks organization has always been one of my biggest weaknesses however what i have learned over the years is that instead of getting upset about myself i shouldn't always i shouldn't try to compare my weakness to someone else's strength you know uh because that just makes me feel worse about myself and i don't actually change anything instead i learned to acknowledge that maybe i'm not naturally organized i can set expectations accordingly and try to become better for example i just try to put out a hair stocks every night for the morning and surprisingly um that has worked pretty well this kind of like self-awareness if you will also taught me how to negotiate with myself to get myself to do things unfortunately i know that i'm just like a really lazy person and i have very little self-control well because i know that i am like this as a person i go and hide my phone for myself and all forms of distractions and another thing i do is that i take this physical timer everywhere i go see i can usually convince myself to do like five minutes of whatever i'm procrastinating on like work or studying or like going to the gym or something and then after that after i've actually started it's a lot easier to continue i actually have so many other examples of what i have to do to kind of trick myself to getting things done because sadly i just can't motivate myself like a normal person so yes i have learned to acknowledge the kind of person that i am and be very self-aware of that and then kind of do things to tailor it specifically towards me and my weaknesses so i can improve myself three the american thing like the

The Pursuit of Happiness

pursuit of happiness that definitely makes sense but i feel like there's like this emphasis on pursuing happiness while in reality i feel like in your pursuit of happiness oftentimes you kind of neglect right now like the current time and that is something that i think you really need to learn to appreciate over the years i've learned to enjoy all the moments of my life and actually especially the tough and uncertain ones the funny thing is that when things are going well i realized that i actually barely remember that time it just kind of flies by you know and what i actually remember is the hard work you know the nights of like the long nights the breakthroughs you know the self-doubt the tears and also the friends along the way i wish that when i was younger i really appreciated these aspects of life more because what i realized is that these hard moments that challenge us are really the moments that shape who we become it's really doing these hard times when people's characteristics start coming out like when everything is fine there's like no need for growth also your characteristic traits like for me i learned that i'm extremely stubborn and also extremely idolistic and speaking of stubbornness i think my greatest regret um was the fact that i didn't experiment with my life more when i was younger don't be like 17 year old to 21 year old tina who just somehow decided that she had to be a doctor like for no apparent reason and stubbornly never even gave something else a chance and then you finally realize that you don't really want to be a doctor and that you would be a terrible doctor and you're like a graduating senior you don't know what to do with your life so then you have an existential crisis so don't be like me pull yourself out there and do something just for the hell of it the world is so much bigger than you think it is and it's constantly evolving especially i feel like in our age the world doesn't work like it used to be when you would go into a company where like a specific profession and you just stay there for your entire life it's not really like that anymore in our age it's so much more important to like learn to take our lives into our own hands and actually create the lifestyle that would make us happy and in order to do that i sincerely believe that you have to learn to put yourself out there to actually figure out what it is that you want why do you look so afraid why does it sound like a bread because cakes are breads do you like it it's okay advice number five learn to

Advice Number Five Learn To Accept Rejection

accept rejection i have learned that failure is necessary for growth you see i'm definitely afraid of failure and i feel impostor syndrome like literally every single day of my life and when i was younger before i would let that hold me back but now i have actually just learned to lower my expectations instead and force myself to do it anyway and finally if you really want something always go for it but do it smartly for example in case i failed at making this cake i got this store-bought cake as a backup plan but really though sometimes people will tell me that they really want to do like xyz like data science where like art or product management where like whatever okay i feel like data science is an easier option since it's also considered one of the best careers out there but you know what i mean right they want to do something and then they're like how should i do it so they're like oh in order to do it i have to first get a degree in engineering and then work five years and then get technical knowledge and then transition into a product manager because i guess they feel like that would give them more job security but please don't do that it's rare when you're very sure about something that you love so you should be thankful for that and i really think you should try to nurture it but you should do it smartly though don't quit your job and become like a starving artist what i would recommend is that you should try to minimize your risk but still do the thing that you love for example if you really want to be an artist you could work a job that's closer to art and still pays the bills and start a youtube channel or something dedicated to art and little by little you'll craft the best life for yourself without you know like not being able to pay the bills but i think it's really important to not give up on your dreams well i hope you enjoy this video and next video we will probably be back to more data science focused content okay i'll see you guys bye
