Introduction to DaVinci Resolve Video Editing

welcome to teachers Tech my name is Jamie and  it's great to have you here today I want to   show you how to use the best free video  editor and that's DaVinci resolve this is   going to be a beginner's video so we're  going to start at the basics and not get   things too confusing to show you how powerful  this is so we can start creating videos right away if you haven't installed DaVinci resolve yet  I'll put a link to this page right here Down Below

How to Download DaVinci Resolve for Free

in the description like I said in this tutorial  here today on Vinci resolve I'm just using the   free version that's right here you just have to  click on this register it and download it to your   computer and install it this will work whether  you're on Windows Mac or Linux I went ahead and
0:40

Starting Your First Project in DaVinci Resolve

opened up DaVinci resolve on my computer here and  this is the first screen that you're greeted with   now these are different projects if you see ones  like this is one I could open up again and   go back and edit it but for this tutorial we're  just starting from scratch so we're going to be   creating a brand new project so I'm just going to  go and select Untitled project just double click   on that and then we're going to go from there when  the new project opens up it should look like this

Exploring DaVinci Resolve Page Views

now I want to point something out at the very  bottom and there's different pages that we can   go to if I hover over them you can see this is  Media this is cut this is edit this is Fusion   this is color Fair light and deliver in today's  tutorial we're only going to be really working in   two of these and that's going to be the edit and  the deliver so I'll do other that I dive into each   of those but for a beginner's video I think it's  good just to kind of learn the basics inside edit   here so I'm going to go ahead and select edit and  then we have this page right here before I start

Setting Up Your Project in DaVinci Resolve

bringing in some of these video clips to start  editing a video I just want to show you something   under project settings so just go up to file  project settings and these are the settings used   depending on how you want your video so I'm I'm  not going to change any of these here today but   right now I have it set at 1920 x 1080 High dep I  can choose different ones if I want it all the way   through here now if you wanted to make something  for Tik Tok or YouTube shorts I could just   click here use vertical resolution and notice it  switches the two now I'm not changing anything so   I'm just going to uncheck that uh I'm going to go  to the bottom and hit cancel now I want to bring   some video clips some audio and some pictures  in and this is where I'm going to bring it into   right here it says no Clips in the media pool so  so far well I'm going to change that now the first   thing what I'm going to do is actually close this  down to make a little bit more real estate and I   can just go up here and click and it goes away I  could turn it on and off just like that I can do   the same thing up top here with even if I want the  media pool to go away just click on it gives me   more room if I'm editing what you might want to  do later on so I'll turn that on let's bring in

Importing Video, Images, and Audio Clips

some video clips so I I'm just going to go grab  one to begin with a couple different ways we can   do this I could rightclick I could go to import  media right here and then here I have a folder   that it's already in I could go grab a video from  here hit open and it brings it in right here now   I can change this from thumb list you can see if  I just click it's already on thumb now but if I   go and change it to list it changes how it is I'm  going to keep it on thumb if I drag over top of it   I can hear it and everything on it as I just scrub  right over it so I get that quick preview here now   I can also go up to file I can import media this  way or I could go and let's say right here I have   the folder here I'm just going to open this up I  can drag things in so here's a song I could drag   a song in right here and as I hover over it gives  me that little bit of a preview here now I can do   multiple ones too so let's say I go and grab a  bunch of these and just drag them in and   I could select a bunch too so I can do all these  different things uh to get all this in my media   here so I'm just going to go and close out of this  now I have in here some pictures here I have some   video and I have some audio as well to start  editing a video we need to take our media clips

Adding Clips to the Timeline: Tips & Tricks

from up here and bring them into our timeline now  first of all what I want to do is actually make   my timeline a little longer and I'm just going to  select this right here uh just to be able to see   a little bit more now I'm going to go and take  this clip right here you can see that there's   some audio in it and there's video and I'm going  to drag it down into my timeline when I drag it   down we can see there there's an audio track below  it and then the video on top of it I can go ahead   and watch it in the timeline preview up here just  by hitting play stop I can also use the space bar   when I hit it will play hit it again it will  stop and I can also grab the play head here and   go along the video or scrub the video as fast as  slow as I want and bring it in reverse just like   that it's always a good idea to save your project  once you start so you can go up and go to file and   then you can notice that there's going to be save  project or save project as this is where you can   give it a name uh I'm just going to call this demo  one hit save and you'll notice up top this   gets changed to demo one so then we can go back if  you're not finished and open it up the next time   you start deiny resolve I'm going to go ahead and  delete this clip so if you don't want it on the   timeline you just need to select it notice when I  select it the red is around it I can hit backspace   or delete on my keyboard and it's gone remember  the controll Z shortcut or command Z on a Mac to   undo your last step to place it back again so I'm  just going to go ahead delete it one more time and   I'm going to place the clip back on the timeline  in a different way so I have this selected so to   have the clip selected so it shows in here you  just need to double click so if I double click   click on this one this becomes the one in the  preview here I if I double click on this one now   this one so I can bring it down to the timeline by  actually just dragging this over to this window so   if I drag it over I get some options do I want to  overwrite insert well right now I have nothing in   my timeline so I'm just going to hit insert and  place it in but we can do a few different things   in this as well so I'm going to go delete this  one more time if we don't want the whole video   let's say I drag this to a point I can go ahead  and watch it in here make sure you have the clip   double clip so it's clicked so it's playing in  here I can put an endpoint like so that I've   placed an endpoint notice how the line darker  how it's darker and lighter uh it'sit marked on   the end point and I can let it play and then when  I get to a point that I think I want it in I can   stop it and hid and out so what it does now is if  I drag this over I can insert it again but it's a   much shorter clip the only thing that's got placed  in here is what I chose out of it so if you have   want to do some trimming right away and I'm going  to show you how to do some more trimming in a   moment but that's a quick way right from the start  that you can trim your videos to get exactly what   you want onto the timeline the whole idea with  video editing is to take these clips from up here
7:34

Organizing Clips Effectively on the Timeline

put them in the timeline in the order that we want  and we can keep adjusting them then we're going   to cut things out of them so to make sure that  the end result is exactly what we want to show   people so with this up here let's say I grab this  and I'm going to drag it down into the timeline I   can quickly change the order as well so I can  take this and Dr drag it to the other side you   can move all these clips around I can even bring  in multiple clips at a time so if I go and select   these three Clips right here and drag them down  now all three Clips are brought in and I can still   drag things around to adjust the order that I want  now the next thing I want to point out when you   have gaps in between uh whether it be videos or  pictures so if I hit the space bar or play notice   on this right here it turns black then starts  again that would be in your end result so whenever   you have a gap like this that's going to come up  with it so you can nudge these up and take away   your Gap just like that and you're then you're not  going to notice it as it plays from one video to   the other now the other thing I want to point out  is this tool right here is the snapping tool if I   have this on what allows me to do is iing bring  the clip up it kind of snaps to that spot or if   I keep bringing it snaps over so it's actually  trimming the One Clip I'm bringing it towards uh   but if I have it turned off it slides very easily  so now if I let go it did some trimming now I want   to point out though if I bring this back notice  that this part is gone maybe you didn't want it   gone and I told you how to use control Z to go  back steps but this hasn't been deleted the source   file hasn't changed up here if I go ahead and  select this I can drag back any of the information   that was deleted on these so once I can't drag  U anything back I know that it's back to The   Originals on each of these sides I'm going to go  ahead and just move these ins and outs back to

Trimming and Splitting Clips in DaVinci Resolve

the end so I have my entire clip I can drag this  right down from there on my timeline to have the   whole piece now I showed you already briefly if  I hover over the ends I get this icon comes up   and I can click and hold my mouse and I can drag  it in and trim and I can also place it back we   can do this with both the ends if you need to take  something out of the middle you can do it this way   if I move my playhead into the middle I have this  right here this blade edit mode if I select it   notice now if I go over I have kind of this razor  blade here if I just click on it now I've cut this   into two pieces you need to make sure you switch  back and forth to different ones so if I go to the   select tool now I have it in two pieces here so I  could delete one of these but I could also go and   maybe move my play head over and then I'll go back  to this and slice this piece now I have this chunk   I could take out I could change the order of it as  well so just with that one clip I could do that or   I could hit delete and then nudge them together  uh depending on what I want I'm going to hit back   my snapping tool back on so I've taken out a chunk  out of the middle that I might not want now I just   want to give you a few examples of the other way  I showed you of dragging into the timeline to do   some editing if I was going to go to uh let's say  this clip right here and I have double clicked and   I drag it over here I could go to overwrite and  Watch What Happens so I go overwrite it just put   it right into that spot it over red the other one  there didn't take away the audio because that clip   didn't have any audio I'm going to go contrl Z if  I drag it over again if I go replace now this was   replaced in that whole area drag it over again  uh I could go and hit insert and it placed it in   between the two so it did a cut just like what  I showed you before and then it took that clip   and put it in between the other thing I just want  to point out as well uh with the is if this tool   right here so if I go somewhere here I can go  this insert the clip and click here and it will   place it similar to what it was happening before  so there's multiple ways to do different things uh   with this in whatever way you get used to here's  the overwrite that I was showing you here when
12:18

Mastering Audio: Adding and Editing in DaVinci Resolve

you're working with audio you can do the same  things so if I go ahead and bring let's bring a   video down notice that there's no audio to this  if I hit play we just see the dog playing there   now here's an audio music I'm going to bring this  down into my timeline into audio one so if I hit   play uh you're going to notice that you can hear  it but I don't want all this extra space I can do   the trimming and splitting just like I did with  the videos now first of all I want to show you   this over here notice I can't see the end of the  audio then when you're working with   longer and longer uh timeline with all the videos  you can change the views here so you if I click on   this now I see it to the very end I'm just going  to click on a few now I'm zoomed up and custom   Zoom is here I can also drag this down so I can  see more of it so if I had more and more Clips I   can make this adjusting I also go back and forth  when I'm editing to zooming if I'm trying to zoom   up on a specific video to do an edit I zoom right  up and then drag my playhead in place but just to   point this out now if I have this clip selected  did I can drag from the ends and trim just like   this I showed you before and move it around in  place I can place audio next to each other just   like with videos as well I can hit delete it goes  away if I want to split any of this I can select   it I can go to my blade edit mode use this same  thing and just select I can cut out a chunk out   of the middle so all these things if I pick the  selection tool and change the order so you can   see how this works very similar to the uh to the  AUD to the video I can go and delete at this point   if you want to change volume levels of this I  want to show you quickly do this up in the   inspector up here so if I hit play I'm going to  just go back and you can hear how loud it's going   to be I could go to my inspector and I have some  options this is just a beginner's tutorial and   I'm just going to point out the volume I can bring  this down here and now it's much quieter so just   some quick adjustments to audio how to add it to  it then you're going to line this up exactly where   you want it with your video let's go ahead and  bring an image into our timeline here so this by
14:47

Incorporating Images into Your Project

the little icon up here I can see this is an image  I'm going to drag this down if I just move this   back a little bit I'm going to move my playhead  and it's static it doesn't move right notice that   they have these black lines around this I'm going  to show you how you can adjust this so that this   doesn't come up on the video but first of all I  want to point out with the video if I grab this   video here I can't make this longer because this  is only going to be so long I could change the   duration by going faster or slower by the speed of  it and that would make it longer but I can't add   more video than that's there but with an image I  can grab the edge and bring it and make it as long   as I want with it so if you're bringing images  in they go into the video tracks and then you   can make them as long or as short as you want now  I went ahead and place some video clips and some
15:43

Unlinking Audio and Video Clips: A How-To Guide

images onto the T Tom I went ahead and placed some  video clips and images onto the timeline and I   want to add an audio clip to underneath everything  but notice this clip right here uh these two are   connected if I try to drag them around they stay  together I want this audio to be gone I could   turn the volume all the way down like I showed you  before then add audio but if I select this notice   if I go to unlink this and I'm going to click off  now and just click now they're separated so this   I can drag around I'm just going to hit delete and  then that's gone there's no audio so at this point   I could go and grab my audio and then make a trim  here I have my audio in now if I drag my playhead
16:27

Transforming Video Clips: Enhance Your Visuals

uh the one thing I want to point out with some of  these video clips and images notice right here in   the under the preview under the timeline there's  a black bar if I compare it to this one it's not   there so the aspects a little different on this  video and the same thing if I go to one of these   you can see this is filmed how it was filmed and I  have all this black bars on the side I can adjust   these by transforming the video so if I select  a clip like this I have transform here so if I   look at all the different options that I have  I can transform crop I'm going to make sure I'm   under transform now I get these handles to this  I can go and stretch this larger so I'm kind of   zooming up on this but now if I go ahead and hit  play notice that black line is gone so it's   staying the same so I can even do this under one  of these clips if I have this selected and since   I have transform I could zoom way up like this and  then you're going to notice it goes through that   and that might not work all the time depending on  how much you zoom uh zoom up I'm just going to go   contrl Z and do that back one because I want to  show you something else in a moment when we work   with some layers with the different tracks if I  go to this is a picture here I can select   the picture in the same thing works with this I  could zoom right up and I can also drag it around   to play so this one would work cuz if I just want  to focus on the head shots I can get them in place   and then I can play it from there and that works  out much better I do want to point out if we go   up to the inspector we do have transform in it  showing everything in here where I can even do   more with rotating in here I can also grab this  with rotating so you can start to change things   around but again I'm not going to get into all  of this but do take a look at this where you can   start playing with it and remember you always have  your control Z to go backwards so far I've only
18:30

Working with Multiple Video Tracks

showed you one video track and one audio track you  can create more video and audio as well so here's   an example if I take this video and just drag  it down into this spot here notice a new video   track was created it's called video 2 and just to  let you know you can change the names as the of   these two so if I just double click you can make  any modifications to the naming I'm just leaving   that as it is so if I go ahead I can place this  anywhere on this video uh timeline I want on that   video track too if I just hit space bar to play  it I have that playing over top of the other ones   you can kind of see it's a different aspect so uh  I can go and change the size of this I could make   this larger if I wanted to hide that or I could  make it smaller so maybe I want something like   picture and picture if I hit play now I on this it  will be playing both videos at the same time and I   can place it where I want now I could keep adding  more at the same time so if I was going to go and   add another one notice if I just drag over top  it's going to create a video three track I could   place this where I wanted this is just a picture  this one I could size it place it exactly where I   want and if I go and play it all three of those so  I have audio playing I have a picture there and a   video all playing at once I can delete these two  so if I right click on these notice I can delete   the track and it goes away so you can have  some fun with playing with different tracks adding   more videos that get played at once with the use  of overlapping different tracks I could place all   of these playing at the same time these videos  in this format so what I mean is if I go and   grab this and place this over top well this one's  covering it up let's make sure I'm under transform   I can move this over to this side here and then  I have this one here and I can trim this one back   and let's go ahead and add one more to it so if  I go and place this over top and I'm just going   to trim this one back to the same and drag this  one over to the right and I could I'm just doing   this quickly just to show you how this can be done  and you can fill the gaps in and change the size   as you want but if I just play it now I have these  three videos all playing at once in here and I can   bring back these clips at the end here let's move  over on how to add transitions now let's go ahead
21:05

Adding Smooth Transitions Between Clips

and add a transition between these two videos so  right now if I just hit play uh you'll notice it   just jumps from one and another and I want it to  be smoother as it changes if I go up to effects   up top here and select this I'm going to move my  playhead in between the two if I hover over any   of these it's going to give me a preview of what  it is when I find which one I like I can drag it   down into it and notice that this is added to it  so if I go back I'll just go back a little bit   and I'm going to hit play and you'll see that is  added into that nice added dissolve transition if   I click on this so you can see it's selected and  go to my inspector I can change it right from here   so if I drop down if I want wanted to be let's  say barn door I can go back now and just hit play   and it changes it to the barn door one but I can  make a number of different changes to customize   it just by looking at these here do I want it to  be longer uh do I want colors into it motion blur   so I can make all those adjustments to it I can  also just drag down here so notice I can make it   play longer from dragging it here and it changes  the duration up in the inspector as well so I can   place this between videos I can also Place between  videos to pictures or pictures to pictures so if   I go and grab a cross dissolve and drop it in  if I just go back a little bit you'll notice   that transition is smooth so it's a quick way  to add these uh effects to your Video Edit let's   move over to how to add text to your video to add  titles or text just move down to titles so we're
22:52

Creating Titles and Text Overlays in DaVinci Resolve

still inside the effects and then we're going to  go to title and it gives some example of different   type of titles if I hover over it shows me kind of  what that would look like here I'm just going to   give an example through the basic text here there  is a text plus that gives you more options but I'm   just going to use this one I'm going to drag this  down to where I want it and if I move this back I   hit play basic title comes up now I don't want it  to say basic title so I'm going to select the clip   go to my inspector open this up and this is where  I make the changes to everything so if I wanted   to say something else I will just go ahead and  put this just like that now I could go through   and change the font it shows you the preview of  what it is going to be so I'm going to leave it   at that one I could make a color change to any  of these so if I wanted it let's say black I   could place this in a different spot to make it  stand out we have some size here just by dragging   or I could place the number in as well and I keep  adjusting where I'd want it now if I go through   I'm not going to show you everything in here but  you can see all the different customizations that   you can uh make from it I can add a stroke so  if I wanted to say uh maybe I'll add this as the   edge color and I can increase the size and that  stroke goes around we can also do drop shadows   and add up background to it here now if I go back  I can shorten this if I don't want it to play for   as long as I had it before so now I have this  here it pops open like that I can go ahead and   place this in different uh places in different  tracks so if I was going to say well you know   what I want it to play at the beginning uh maybe  I go and just I'm moving everything around so I   selected everything I move this back to uh the  backround uh back here and I'm just moving it   so now you'll notice and I can still make those  same changes is do this become back to the middle   and maybe this is the beginning part of it so just  some different options how to play and insert text
25:06

Exporting Your Video: Final Steps

so now how do I export this video so I can share  this with others maybe place it on YouTube or   just have that file of the finished uh all these  different things from the text to the video clips   the images to the audio in it we need to go over  to here to the deliver so I'm selecting deliver   at this point I want you to take a look here now  I know this is only five seconds long this video   but we can pick if it was longer we could pick an  in and an out point to uh go on this so I don't   actually have to export the whole file I could  pick an in andout range but I do want the entire   timeline so I'm just going to go back then over  on the left here I can pick how do I want this to   be exported I could go through and do a custom  one and set everything up here I could use one   of these presets so if I knew I was going to put  this on YouTube I could select YouTube here let's   give it a name I'm just going to call this demo  one just as the same as the title and I could go   through and pick what I wanted I can make still  the changes it had the default set up here but I   can make those changes if I want at this point I  can go add render to q and you'll notice it pops   open up over on this side nothing has started yet  because I could actually put multiple jobs over   here and render them all I'm just doing the one  this is going to be very quick because it's only   5 Seconds long but render all and then you'll  notice that it's saying it's only taking a few   seconds and then it should be done right away  so where did it go well it went over to this   file right here so I'm going to open this up and  it's called demo one here it is it exported out   into here I'm going to open this and you're going  to see it start to play we have the text we have   the music we have the transitions in it all those  things that we quickly made changes and we have   this at the end with no watermarks on it using  the free DCI resolve so I hope you like this   video tutorial on how to use uh D Vinci resolve  for beginners I know we didn't really go deep   into it but if you're new to it and new to video  editing I just wanted to you with a basic start   let me know what else you'd like to learn about  D Vinci resolve Down Below in the comments thanks   for watching this time on teachers Tech I'll see  you next time with more Tech tips and tutorials
