Segment 1 (00:00 - 03:00)

The rise of AI is fundamentally changing how we think about user experience. Generative AI systems have established a new interaction paradigm, intent-based outcome specification. This is already shifting how we think about digital design. Traditionally, users had to tell computers, through interacting with them, exactly what to do step by step. Think about planning a vacation. You have to separately search for flights, then hotels, then activities. The human has to manually compare options and then coordinate dates across multiple websites. AI systems have introduced something new. The ability to describe what outcome you want. Instead of telling the computer how to do something through each interaction, users can specify what they want to achieve. This shift is profound, and it's changing how we think about design. Outcome-oriented design involves orchestrating experience design with a greater focus on user goals and final outcomes, while strategically automating aspects of interaction and interface design. Let's use flight booking as an example. In traditional design, we'd focus on creating the perfect search filters, carefully laying out results pages, and optimizing each component in a way that is most usable to the majority of customers. This is going to shift. We're going to shift from designing for the average to designing for the individual. For example, designers will identify different sets of requirements that the system operates within while helping the user achieve their goals. This shift means our role as designers is evolving. Instead of designing static interfaces, we are becoming architects of possibilities. Our job is shifting from creating a single experience designing frameworks that can adapt to individual needs. Think about it like this. Rather than designing a single rigid path through a forest, we're defining the boundaries of where paths can go and what makes a good path. The AI then creates specific paths based on each traveler's needs and wants. While this shift may seem daunting, especially for those of us who have spent years crafting our current practice, our fundamental UX skills will remain crucial. User-centric problem-solving, critical thinking, and holistic thinking will be more important than ever before. Our job isn't disappearing, it's evolving. We're moving from designing single experiences to orchestrating adaptive ones. Outcome-oriented design represents a fundamental shift in our field, but it's one that amplifies rather than diminishes the importance of human-centered thinking. As AI becomes more capable of handling the step-by-step details, our role becomes more strategic, focusing on the outcomes that truly matter to users and ensuring the technology serves those outcomes effectively.
