CyberLink PowerDirector 17 Tutorial - Designed for Beginners

when you open up PowerDirector 17 you're going to be greeted with this where you choose right away simply what do you want now if you're working with something like 360 video you can see you could choose it down here I want to show you risk just briefly the slideshow creator before I get into more the timeline mode and that's going to be the majority of this will be the timeline mode where you're going to be doing more specific editing but with slideshow creator if

you want to create a slideshow in a hurry with music and motion or effects this is a great way to do it so all I'm gonna do is I in this folder right here I have a mixture of different things from videos pictures and music but if I drag this over and I could add at them differently too I could have picked the selected ones from import my photos but I like doing it this way because just the photos went in so I only had two photos in there and now what I can do is I can add an effect to it so it's style so maybe I'll just put motion down below I add some music and then I'm just going to click the plus here and I'm just gonna pick one of these here we'll do this song right here hit OK and I'm gonna go to preview now and then I can go ahead and hit play so I have this slideshow being started with motion that I picked with the music added to it and had fade in fade out and then at the end all you do is you go to production and you could go ahead and produce the video create a disc or even go to advanced editing on it on this so I just wanted to show you that before we get into our timeline mode in PowerDirector 17 it's very easy to switch from different modes

all the time too so I did show you this slideshow creator but I'm gonna enter into timeline mode but I can switch to storyboard mode or 360 editor right in it or even change any of my aspect ratios so if I wanted to skip all the time and then just go into timeline mode I could just check this off here but I'm going to be using 16 - 9 4 - 3 is your old style aspect ratio and your smartphone is your 9 to 16 line but I'm going to go into timeline mode here first of all when it ends up I just want to show you how to

quickly switch those things I mentioned so this is timeline mode where you have your different tracks but if you wanted to go to story mode in a hurry just hit your tab key so when I hit my tab key story but storyboard mode works like a storyboard you just put them in these rectangles in an order that you want your video to play or pictures to play but you're not going to be able to do those advanced editing from timeline mode but it's very easy to switch back and forth you can see with it as I hit tab it changes now the other thing to look at too is if you look up top here where it says the aspect ratio if I click on this I can change my aspect ratio at any time inside here I can even change it to the 360 to work with those 360 videos too so once you've selected doesn't mean you can't change once you're in it so before we get started with our editing here today I just wanted to give you a quick walkthrough at any time with any of these videos if

I double clicked on one it's going to give me my preview inside here so I haven't moved it down to my tracks yet but it will give the preview if you want to see it and play it through this preview window now just going over to the left here you can see there is capture in here so with this PowerDirector 17 I can capture in many ways so if I didn't have video our clips to bring into it I could actually capture so I can capture from my webcam I could capture from audio and from different sources and bring it so there is a screen capture in here that works very well I'll do a different video kind of looking at that more specifically now we were in our edit editing here if I have something down here if I drag it into the track you can see I have I can produce this now so if I go over to produce this is where I'm going to be actually when I finish my video I'm going to go ahead and pick what I want you can see it as they go through standard 2d to 3d to device and different things from it so these are just your option and then you can also pretty go to create disk so if you wanted to burn this you have the option to go through and create a disk from this and they have different templates for this so those are just a little bit of a walk through of it we are going to be working in this edit mode here today as I show you the basic editing and working with the effects inside PowerDirector 17 so let's start

by importing our media to PowerDirector 17 now one thing I like is they give you some samples to start with and that's what you've seen that's been on my screen so you can play around and edit with those but if you have your other media that you want to bring in so when I say media I'm talking about videos audio or pictures that you can bring in to add to the timelines now what I can do up here if I go up to import media you can see you have your different options you can import a media files or the whole folder so for example if I click on import media files I already have this one open before I can go ahead and import and you can see that this is here and if I double click on it you can see it gives me that quick preview up here the other thing I can do is if you just happen to have your folder open you can see this is the same folder I can drag things right into it so I could drag right into my library and there it is add it there or I can actually just add to my timeline too so if I drag right down into my timeline I can start from there so there's different points you can start with bringing in your media just make sure it's easy to have that or go if you have that organized then it's easier to find it and bring it in the other thing I just wanted to point out before we start some editing is looking at the media content here so if I look at this you can see I can go through if you needed a color background that you can bring in to these and you just go through the list of all the different things that you have there's some background images we have background music you can if you click on it will give you a sample of these ones and we also have some sound clips and we have some projects that if you were I don't have any saved in there but then you have your express projects too so just different ways to bring in media into your library I'm just going to go back to my media content up here and you can see if you're looking for something specific if you're like oh just want to see the videos if you click off of these here so right now I only have videos turned on that's what you're gonna see if I wanted to see images you can go through there so there's just some options that you can see if you wanted larger icons to go through and just have everything set up on your own so now that you know how to import your media let's start with some editing now so

let's start by dragging different types of media into our timeline into the different tracks now first of all I'm just gonna start with this is a video here I'll double click and show you in the preview right here over just the spinning earth there's no audio to this one at all I'm gonna drag this down into this track right here so you can see that it's in this position at the start here I can now preview this now I'm previewing the movie here because it's what I'm working on down here I can what I can do also is you can see how small this looks and you'll be wondering you can zoom up on this to work on this so at the bottom right hand corner if I just click on the side you can see as I increase my view I can zoom up on this to work on this so I can get to a specific spot so this is the playhead when I drag through a certain part of the video you can see what's happening in the preview up top so you can grab this get to a specific plot spot and the more you zoom up and if you're doing some editing later this might help you find that specific spot to edit as you can get closer to the frame by frame I'm just gonna zoom out a bit now I'm gonna bring in another video here so this one I'm just gonna drag this right beside it actually leave a little bit of gap up a gap you can see there's a gap between the two this one has some audio to it so if I hit play and this one is part of the one that they give you with it so if you're lining up your different videos if I go ahead and hit play on this one you can see there's a gap there and then it goes into the video because that's black right there so if I nudge it over now that gap will be gone and it will play straight through when I hit the play between the two different ones I can also put this on a different track so if I bring it down I could put it down here and it doesn't change anything so if I go ahead and hit play because a lot of times people like to work in different tracks to keep everything organized the one thing you need to know if you overlap your tracks like so if I go hit play it's the bottom one that you're gonna see not the top one and this is different than a lot of video editors other video editors that's the opposite on this one so inside PowerDirector make sure you know it's the top one that's going to be showed overtop of this one so I'm just going to move this one back here and just wanted to show you - you can always if you go right through here and you get this icon you can click and stretch out your different so if you want it larger you can stretch out your tracks like this if you want it to get a little bit more closer and detail to see what you're doing on it the other thing I wanted to show you - if you do make a change I'll just do a quick edit from a drag back if you're working on something always remember ctrl Z will get you back that will undo your steps on this one so ctrl Z on your windows will go backwards and the other thing once you start bringing in so let's say you've brought in I'll bring in this image too so I've now brought in an image I brought in video with audio and and I can bring in audio too by itself when I bring in audio you can see I have it lined up it goes into the audio track by looking at that speaker you can tell the difference and these are video tracks I can move these all around into different audio tracks just like how I have different video tracks now make sure you save right away when you start working on this you need to save this as the project as the PowerDirector project so when I go into you can see save project as and save project you can if you're naming it for the first time save project as and go through and find a spot for it on these ones so make sure because if anything gets this way if anything crashes on you you'll have it backed up there so that's just some beginning points of bringing in your audio making sure you have everything set up now next I'm gonna bring in let's talk about how to do even some trim some cuts and some edits on all of this so for

some editing here I'm just gonna use this clip to begin with I'm gonna bring this down into this track you can see the audios here first thing when you're trimming all you have to do is go to the ends and grab and try again so if I bring my mouse from the hand so the hand is the move tool where I move things all around but if I go to the edge and get this icon and then drag in I've just trimmed the end off of that so I've made a clip change there and I've trimmed it and I can do the same thing with both ends so if I drag this you can see I've adjusted it like so now I can also put those back like I showed you before you could use control Z and then it will go backwards like this but you can also I never change the source file on it I'm just trimming inside the timeline here if I go back I can drag this back like this so it puts it back on it on a note what I'd want to say so a video I can't drag it longer and I'll show you how to change the duration very quick you know a few minutes here but you can't make it longer than it is with a picture so if I drag this picture in here I can drag a picture longer and play it for as long as I want but a video you don't have that option so let's go back to the editing over here let's say if I wanted to cut something out in the middle I wanted a sequence gone what I can do is take my playhead and move it to where I want it to be I cut and if I click on the clip and right-click I can go to split now pay attention to the shortcuts here because if you're doing this lot see this will save you time but for now just if you're new to this just experiment or the right-click but the shortcuts do work to save you time if you keep using you can see how I made the cut so I could drag this away from each other on it or if the other thing what I wanted to do was to clip something out in the middle maybe I move my playhead like I did and hit split now I have a third piece where I can drag it out I could put these side-by-side like so and I have a different clip here I could even delete this if I wanted to remove this take a look at all the different options that you have through here by right-clicking on it so you can see if I just hit remove relief gap or move and fill a gap and I'm just going to go to the last one so it removes all of it so now I had showed you how to do some editing from the trim and cutting out in between the other way you can do some editing and I'm just going to delete this here I'm gonna move this over I'm going to put in this earth right here and bring in my teachers Tech and intro notice if I drag over top of something like this I get an option I can override it and you can see now it just it trimmed the first video I'm just gonna go back control Z if I go back to it insert now this time it put it in between the points of it so you can do trimming and editing just by dragging other videos on top of it and remember again I keep like to keep on just saying the ctrl z factor because if mistakes are made it's easy to undo them and then just keep saving your project regularly so you don't lose anything also now going back to this footage again with the skateboard I'm going to bring this one back in let's say you can see this

one has audio on this one you can actually unlink the audio so if I right click on it and again a lot of these things you can do by right clicking you can go link unlink and now the audio if I get I select it separately can be deleted or move to a different soundtrack so maybe if you took some video and you're like I just want the audio out of that you can detach it and just keep the audio and place it somewhere on it so those are just some basic editing trims and unlinking of different things but I still have a lot more things I want to show you with this and remember what you're doing with all this trimming you're you putting together this timeline of events that you're gonna produce a video with at the end with probably pictures and video and audio on it that you're going to export to this and you can view at any time up here as you're working on it through the movie through the through moving the playhead around or watching it up in the preview if you wanted a full preview at any time if you're in a certain spot just double click on this and what you're gonna get is the full video to watch it from if you wanted to watch it to have rather than the small screen and if you didn't want to watch it from here you just hit escape and it goes back so now I want to

show you how to add transitions and then some text and titles to your videos and if you look over on the left hand side here I'm just going to go to a transition room right here and click on it it's going to open up with all the different transitions you can go through and click on different ones just to see what everything is I'm just gonna leave it under the general one for now I've put in place I have three two different videos and a picture all I need to do is to add my transitions I can drag them in between my Clips like this and now when I play it you can see I have that transition in between those two videos I can also if I grab this one put it in between the picture and a video I have that transition so very simple to add them and if you want to customize them a bit more just double click on them and you can see you can make some adjustments with the overlap to cross to the type in here to the in and out of it and you can reset stuff through here too but I'm not going to make any more changes just go through ahead and play on those ones the next thing what I want to do is show you the title or text the title room and this is a very simple way to add you're just gonna drag once down pick to what you think where you want to start it you can still customize everything I'm gonna go down pick this one here right at first and remember you're gonna drag it below the other videos I'm gonna bring it into this one to the title track you can see we have my title here to make adjustments to this if I go ahead and double click on this one you'll see this opens up with a screen that I can start to do customization of this one so if I wanted to make sure I'll just save my movie and you can go through and if you were done you could hit OK and you can see it now it's my movie if I go back to it there's a few different things that you can do to customize it I'm under advanced right now there's also the basic and the basic allows you to go through if I close this these little triangles you can see it will show you all the different things so if you ever want to see more things you can do just open up and then you can make different adjustments to it so if I click on shadow now we have a little shadow but I can change the direction and where it goes from there so open up these to make more of an adjustment I can change my I can change the font quickly by using the presets here or you could go to your advanced ones and do all the same things but have a few more options through here just go through and open all these up to see what you can change with it and when you're done you can go ahead and hit save or hit OK and then we have those adjustments to this so we have our font at our bottom layer and remember you can drag this around too and add all the attributes to this so if you wanted to trim it you could trim it down like I showed you before we even use the control to shorten it up on it but we have just a font here pretty simple one here to play but adjust it to where you want so those are just two tips with some basic things to make your videos a little bit better okay so let's

move on now to changing a duration of a clip inside your video project so I'm just gonna bring in my intro and right now this intro is quite slow so a lot of times all speed this up in my videos and what I'm going to do to quickly show you how to do this inside this one there's a couple different ways if I click on the clip and go over to tools and check out the other tools that are available to you because I'm not showing you everything in this video but I think this is intuitive enough that you're gonna once you understand how to use a few of them you're going to be playing with a lot of them I'm gonna go to video speed over here and click on it and what you're gonna get to see is that this is a 10 second clip week I can do the preview here like I just kind of showed you before but if I want to adjust how quick this is I could move this so now it's only what that's a little too fast so now it's one second that would be way too fast and I can adjust it so if I wanted about three seconds I can drag this to where I want to I'll drag this a little bit over I'll leave it there and hit OK and it shortened it and it also identifies that this has been changed by this icon right there so if you see those on your clips that you know that's been adjusted if I hover over you can see the video speed is identified on it so if I bring in let's say this one right now and I want to do some quick adjustments duration I showed you before when you drag the ends you trim it but if you hold ctrl down when you do this and drag it in its gonna adjust the duration really quickly I like that feature to it and you can see that it identifies as the speeds change has been changed on it and I can do the other way too so if I wanted this slow motion I could go like this I'll just quickly play it so you can see and remember it goes with the audio altogether so that's why that slowed down that might be why you want to detach the audio and do it separately if you didn't have the original footage but I remember you can go back to but the control-z puts it back but very quick to do that way too the next thing that I wanted to show you was just again working with multiple

levels of this so if I go and change let's say dragged the dog underneath and remember when I we are going to see the bottom one here so again if you've worked with other video editors this is a little different on it if I go to this one here I'm just going to make this a little larger so we can see it I can change the transparency of this so there's a blue line right here if I drag this down and adjust the transparency now you can see through it so the music is still there

but let's say you want to adjust the music you can do the same thing with the music if I go to this clip see the blue line there I can bring it up to make it louder or if I wanted a quieter already mute it I could just bring it all the way down be careful of those yellow spikes there if you get set yet if you're bringing a little too intense it will notify you through there so some quick adjustments through the transparency of those you can see how if I bring it back then it becomes on the top spot now the other thing you can do just to show you some

other features when you're working with layers all right that if I click on this layer right here and this is the one that you see I get these handles here so with the handles I can change the size of the clip and I can move it around you can see if I hit play again I'm have a picture-in-picture here I can also make sure you clip on click on the clip first and then you can make some adjustments you can rotate it or skew it so if I skew it you can see I could bring in one side like that and I'm skewing it and I can go wherever you see those blue squares on it I'll just ctrl Z to go back and you can rotate it like so and all of these will play and you can add more and more tracks at any time if you wanted to add more picture and picture on this so just something simple to do but remember you have to click on the clip to make those adjustments there are some different ways that I'll show you in a moment to add some different effects when you're working on the different layers the other thing I just wanted to point out before I leave this section is just if you wanted to hide different layers you can see if I turn this off unclick it I'm not gonna see that bottom layer anymore so I can if you knew everything was in the right place I could turn it off and work on a different layer if you didn't want to see it the other thing that you can do is with this one is to lock it so if you had everything perfectly right so now if you go ahead and lock it you can't move and so that's a handy feature to turn on if you know everything in your track is in the right spot he didn't want to accidentally nudge it go ahead and lock it and we'll put everything in place so let's go on with some more of the great effects with the power tractor 17 ok so

I still want to show you some more features before we get to rendering our project and saving it for upload to something like YouTube and that is video collage first so what I'm gonna do is up here under the puzzle of the plugins up here so if I could click on there and you can see all the different things that you can do but what I am looking at right now is this video collage designer so I'm going to go ahead and click on this and these are my media that I have these are the layouts so if I go through a different ones you can see all the different layouts of it I'm just going to pick this one here and then what I can do is just drag in my media to the places where I want it I can make adjustments to the border I could change the color if I wanted to maybe I'll make this more black and then you can even change the color here to a different one so fall to make this bright so you can see it and I'll just leave it like that and I can go ahead and hit OK and so I have this video collage I don't play it for you can see how quickly it was to make this professional video collage very simply just by dragging and adjusting a few things so the next thing would I want to show you I'm just going to delete this and put in my

skateboarder here you can make quick adjustments and enhancements from everything to the video and audio so if you have your selected clip just look at fix and enhance here so if I click on fix and enhance and go to this I can have all these options so if I want to adjust the lighting the white balance so I just select what I want and then I can make an adjustment you can see how it became a little brighter there of it or if I want to make it darker if I wanted the white balance on it if I wanted maybe a little cooler temperature turn it more blue I can make all these different changes to it right through here and I can also even do the audio dino in here if I wanted to try to clean that up also so you can go through and play with all these different things that are available through here to get your video looking as good as you can with it and with it not being very hard to do the

special effects feature again another easy one to use you're just gonna click and drag so if I take my footage down here and I'm gonna use this Chinese painting one right here too and drag it right on top of it and you can see now when I play it I have this cool effect add it to it so you can go through and just drag these on top of your footage to quickly alter and change any of these so if I drag it you can see now I have another one added to it so very quickly make some very fun videos the other thing that you can add here right below it you can see there's video overlays here that like if you wanted these because some call-outs you can put these below so remember working below and then we can go through and play and I'll do that one more time and then if I go back you can see how it's right in the middle again any of these ones if you wanted to make some changes to it double click and you can make some adjustments to get different colors on this ones so the last thing before we get to saving what I want to show you was using chroma key or green-screen on it what I'm gonna do is just delete this I'm gonna go back to my media and I'm just gonna grab a couple of different

things I'm gonna grab this footage from inside New York here and I'm gonna grab these chickens and I'm going to put these chickens on to the streets here so again working with green screen and PowerDirector below this has to go below if you're used to working and other video editors it would go above but in this one it goes below so what I'm gonna do now is I want this green to disappear if I double click on this and you notice what's going to open up is I have some different options here but chroma key is what I want so I'm going to select chroma key and all I'm gonna do now is select the eyedropper to select what color I want and I want the green gone and I click on it and I'm left with this so you can see I can make some adjustments if I need it to do anything I'm gonna leave it with these ones but you can try to see if it didn't come out clean you can make some adjustments there but what I can also do is I want these chickens smaller and moved over so what I showed you before if I have this clip selected I can grab the handles I can make them smaller I can move them and put them on the street like this and so now I have them eating on the street so that's just using the green screen so there's a lot of different features that you can use in PowerDirector I just go and explore again I haven't touched on all of them so far and if you I think you're gonna feel pretty comfortable just going through and exploring them and adding them a lot to your work now let's get to the final step and that is rendering and getting our project ready to upload or save onto your computer so let's say

your video is finished do you have everything in the order it's looking great and you want to save it and render it maybe upload it to YouTube all you need to do is go up to produce right now and click on it and you're going to get lots of different options to save this you can see we can preview it through here if you wanted to watch it or drag through the playhead to see what's in it at this one where it says standard 2d this is saving it on to my computer so maybe if you knew you were going to upload it to YouTube later and you weren't directly connected maybe you'd want to go to this one here where it's they're going to be the mp4 you can see 1920 by 1080 we can select where we want this save to so you go ahead and select it maybe there's a certain folder you pick it and then go ahead and hit save on it but the other thing what I like about this you can connect director online so I'm going to go over to the online tab over here and I can give it a title through here if I'm selected on youtube I would probably keep it private to start with a lot of times with my videos i if I'm uploading directly after I keep it private and make it make any adjustments and release it when I want to release it so it's not released a great as I upload it so I could go make those changes and then I can go here ahead and hit start and I can give it the description and everything up here if I want to type in there a lot of times I save it till after but if you're just saving it on your computer you can go through here and pick your options and go ahead and then just hit start down below and it's going to start to render this so I hope you like this tutorial I know there was a lot of information but there's still so much more PowerDirector 17 can do and I want to know what you are wondering about PowerDirector what would you like to know what maybe there's certain areas that you're having problems with and I can make more tutorials on it so please let me know down in the descriptions down below so thanks for watching this week on teachers Tech and I'll see you next time with a new tutorial
