Intro

hi there Jamie Keith here today a teachers tech hope you're having a great day today I'm going to go over five free Photoshop alternatives now these alternatives are going to be available so either for your Windows or Mac depending what you're using and even on Chromebook with some of these now these are great programs to use at different entry levels so whether you're more the advanced user or the beginner they're you're a little bit different for each one so take a look at the ones that suit you the best I do have tutorials for many of these I'm going to add more so check the description down below for links or in the card above and in the script description let me know what you want to learn in these programs and I can create more tutorials and put them and send them out to you so let's get started here today a teacher stack with the top 5 free photoshop alternatives

Krita

I'm just gonna start with my favorite program out of all these and that is Krita or Kryta I'm never quite sure how to say it this is a great program you can install it on Mac Windows or Linux it's very powerful the graphic interface is great I do have a tutorial for this one take a look in the card above or the description down below but let's do it a little quick walk through just to show you some of the features with Krita if you're a digital painter this one could be for you can easily create your new canvases to start your own customization of it and start using the many brushes right away and the adaptations that you can make to them you can check out the brushes just by clicking on the brushes and you can see how quickly you can adjust them with the size and opacity right through here of it so if I was gonna bring that down you can see how quickly I can make these adjustments and then look at all the different brushes that you can choose from here to carry many designs on it you can change your colors quickly and you can even adapt and change and customize your own brushes on your own settings you have all the ability of layers to add just like in Photoshop and your selection tools to get that precise selection that you need you can also work with pictures really easily if you wanted to do some quick photo editing you have the features such as the crop tool and your fun tools like they remove the blemish tool so for instance if I was going to use this patch tool here I can take it this little Cathedral and if I click on it turn pink and it will be gone so you can use other tools where you might typically see some of them in here but if you go up to the brushes you'll be able to see that there are things like the clone tool that you see in Photoshop to grow the shrink so there's many of these tools that are identical to what you see in Photoshop and this is all free cross platforms - another great program is

Medibang

medibang paint now this one again can be cross-platform and you can also use it on your PC iPad iPhone Android devices so this is a great painting program or if you're into comic creation but you can still edit photos in this to slow let's go ahead and just open this up when it opens up you are exposed to the ad at the beginning but I find once you click off this you won't see anymore now there are a few features though in this one you need to have an account and be logged in like accessing all the fonts and whether or not that's something that you don't want to do so just know about this program but other than that if you are creating your artwork this is another great program for that where you can create your canvas is very easy choosing whether transparent background or the solid fills and you can see through the toolbars here if you're used to any of the other programs you can quickly choose your brushes up here and do some painting with some of the designs and then you have all your different brushes that you can choose from if you wanted to go to something more traditional and a quick way to change your colors where you can pick from the spectrum and then pick something in here to alter it here again you work with all your layers in this so very similar to Krita or Photoshop just the layout if you're used to working within this one so this is another great program to try again if you wanted to open up images you can go ahead and do that and then work on some of the aspects to edit these images the way in other programs to is another

GIMP

powerful program in fact this was my go to free program years ago when I just started to learn about how to photo edit and do some basic painting with these taper programs now I would say with this is more something I would use for photo editing over the painting like the other programs and the interface isn't quite as friendly as the other ones - it has the same features as the other programs I showed such as Krita or medibang the one thing I find this one the interface isn't as friendly when I went to moving around it I know where things are in this so then it's not too bad but if you're starting brand new choosing a program this one you might have to dig a little bit deeper and learn how to do a few things in it but if once you do this can be a great program you can see all the tools that are there you still get it broken up between your selection tools your paint tools and your transform tools they're very easy to use you can see with the paint just like some of the other ones that die for showing you with a clone where you can pick a certain area and go ahead and clone it and it reacts very quickly to it so while it is something to kind of dig around take a look at a few other tutorials on this and this could be the program for you if you're looking for

Photoscape X

something fun and easy photoscape x is the one for you then this is again cross-platform you can put it on your Windows or Mac on it a simple install but it's very fun to use it's intuitive as you click on different things and that you can upgrade to a pro version but the free one will do a lot of the tasks that you probably need to get done I think photoscape X is actually a program that would solve most people's problems for what they wanted to accomplish with editing some photos or creating some neat documents now it's super easy to use and the way it's set up across at the top you can see from our editor to cut out and I'll just pull a couple things in so if I was going to grab this in right here I can just drag it in after my files and you can see all the different things now I am using the free version there is a pro version too and I'll just show you a couple of the things you might want if you were upgrading but this free one can do a lot you can see how you can quickly crop you can manage the color and you can apply different things right away as I click on different ones now fun things like this you can go to the collage here and pick different collages you can see which ones are pro but once you're in it again you can just drag these in to it and you can adjust these where you want them so then you can save it from here and this works in the free version on the ones that are listed as not pro so there's different things even from creating a gif too even for doing print pages on this too so if you want it to do a print page and put things on you can see that you can select the different ones different ways to print to your printer from here so definitely a fun program to use if you're upgrading to pro the things that you're missing you can see that if you were unlocking all the features and things like the transform tool you might want or maybe some of these other ones that like selective color or if you were getting more into photo editing but the free one does a pretty good job just for getting started

Pixlr

so lastly today I want to show you Pixlr there's actually two different pictures to show there's the photo editor Pixlr X which is newer and they're traditional they're Pixlr editor which I do have a tutorial and I'll connect that down below this is something that works on any platform because all you need is the browser and it works on a Chromebook when I used to teach it to kids with photo editing and I only had two Chromebooks this is one I would use because it was accessible for them it is a flash based program but let's just go ahead and I'm gonna open the two different ones to show you so now I'm in Pixlr editor just online you can look at the URL pixlr. com for us laughs editor I can create a new image I can open from computer or even from a URL from the Internet I could place it in and open a picture from there creating a new image much like the other ones it doesn't it's not as robust as the other ones but you can see where I can go through and set my width and height and even have a transparent background from there the brush tools and the pencil tools the fill tools are very similar to use and they work quite well while online you can switch your colors around very quickly to go through and you have your things like your clone tools and different things so this is a great program especially if you just want to be logged in online and do some quick editing this could be the one for you now let's look at the other one with the Pixlr X now so now I'm in the

Pixlr X

Pixlr X editor you can see up top pixlr. com for its last act /x and i can open an image from here and do the same thing loadurl but we can also create from here they have some nice templates that you can just choose from if you need that specific sighs right away or you can pick your own size too they also have a stock search in here so you can see the default term when I went to it was Park and you can go ahead and go through and pick one of these and it will load up you can say what you want it in and that at this point you can see we have our editing tools down the side here so we can quickly go through and start editing these pictures and then we can just go ahead and apply it and we can make these changes so take a look at all the different tools this one is actually very intuitive you can see the layers on the right hand side where if I want you to add some text and image and drawing to it I like the feel of this one for an online and free use this could be a great one to use if you just want something quick and going to the URL and as I said it works on the Chromebook so these have been my top five favorite - free Photoshop alternatives and some of them are kind of maybe based more around paint than photo editing but they can all do a little bits and pieces of all I've kind of said what my favorite was but you have to look at them for what your needs are in what your system but what your computer is like to see how they work effectively on it I'm going to be creating more tutorials on these ones and as I find out more programs I'll let you know so make sure you hit that subscribe button I do these weekly tutorials on many different things from photo editing to video editing to many other products as well so I hope you liked it if you have please share this with a few other people have a great week and I'll see you next time a teachers tech
