High School Physics | Episode 4: Friction – Static, Kinetic & Real-Life Applications

Welcome to episode four of our high school physics course. Today's topic is one you experience every day. Friction. There are two main types. Static friction, which prevents motion, and kinetic friction, which resists motion once it starts. The law of friction says that the force of friction is directly proportional to the normal force and independent of the contact area. Mathematically frictional force F dar MN where EOM is the coefficient of friction and N is the normal force. Let us compare static and kinetic friction. Static friction is generally higher while kinetic friction takes over once an object starts moving. Common examples shoes on the ground, car tires on the road, brakes in vehicles. Friction is what stops motion and sometimes enables it. But friction is not always useful. It causes wear and tear, heat, and energy loss. Engineers use lubricants to reduce it. In space, there's almost no friction. So once an object starts moving, it keeps going. That's Newton's first law in action. Understanding friction helps us build better machines, drive safely, and even design sports gear. It's everywhere. Thanks for watching.
