Should you make your own game engine? This is a question that I see every once in a while and for me the answer is very simple. It basically comes down to do you want to make a game engine or game? Usually you can't do both at the same time. You have to focus on either one or the other. So depending on which one of these you prefer, depending on that you can make your choice. Making a game engine by yourself is insanely difficult. You need to learn how to build your own rendering using perhaps something like DirectX or Vulcan. Then you need to either build your own physics engine or learn how to use something like Havoc. You need to implement your own asset import pipeline. Figure out how to import some like a PNG or an FBX. Then figure out what language you want to use. Either use C#, C++ or perhaps even make your own language. But the main point being how you need to do all of that before you can even start making your game. So if you want to make game engine in order to make your game, first you have to make this insanely difficult task and only afterwards can you actually start doing the game. So that is why I say this question really just has one answer. Do you want to make game engines or do you want to make games? If you want to make games, just use a commercially available engine. Thankfully nowadays you have tons of options. So Unreal is excellent. Unity is also excellent. GDAU is also excellent. There's never been an easier time to learn how to make games.
