We Honored My Mum in the Most African Way Possible.
Today is my mother's 76th birthday. So I did what any surprise-delivery expert like me would do. I sent a chanter to go praise and honor her. We let the oriki land first: her names, her lineage, her proverbs, and the praise that says we know exactly who you are, and we are not going to let you forget it. My bonus Dad sat beside her, alongside thirty of her dearest friends in her hometown.
The chanter sang her into her own life, every season she has survived, every prayer she has prayed over us, every quiet, faithful thing she has done that the world rarely thanks a woman for. She was praised. She was honored. She was seen. She called me to pray for me afterwards in every language she could speak.
Enjoy the movie we made for her here. All of this was planned in 4 days. I didn't even know she was inviting her friends and getting a Canopy.
