Start

hi there Jamie Keith here today a teachers tech hope you're having a great day today I'm gonna go over Premiere Pro so I'm this is a beginners tutorial on how to use it if you haven't used it before it's a very powerful program I'll be going from everywhere from importing your media to using the timeline to working with audio special effects things like green-screen and exporting it at the end to youtube or the different ways you can export it if you're looking for any other tutorials on Premiere Pro please let me know in the comments down below and I can look at creating those for you and put together a playlist remember I do these weekly tech tips so hit that subscribe button in that little notification Bay also when you know that my new videos come out so let's get started on Premiere Pro CC today in this beginners tutorial
0:51

Create a project

so when you first open up your Adobe Premiere Pro you're gonna get this window here and you can see I can start a new project right away which I'll be doing in a moment just a quick overview you can see there's Creative Cloud files which will sync with your computer and the cloud if you went and got the subscription with Adobe the Adobe products we have our sync settings that you would set up here we can go to our new project here we can open our projects we can go to a team project usually connected through the cloud where many people from a group can work on I'm not going to be covering that here if I go up to the top there's these tutorials here that are always good for different ideas that if you just want to learn more about Premiere Pro so what I'm gonna do is go to new project and we're gonna pick some settings I'm just going to give it a title here so I'll call this example video and you can see where I can select the browse I can go through and pick my general formats of how I want things set up I'm not gonna change anything in here but you do notice that you have lots of different settings that you can adjust here I'm just going to hit go ahead and hit OK and you will see that the premiere opens up all ready to work and we have the different views here and I'm gonna go ahead and start importing some media for
2:12

Create a sequence and import media in Premiere Pro CC

you when you first start working on your project the first thing you're going to need to do is create a sequence you can have a number of different sequences to work on in Adobe Premiere in this one I'll just be showing you one and so to do this you can see I can drag me to here to create a sequence and to do that so I'm just gonna go open up one of my folders and let's say I want this earth one here and I'm just gonna click on it and drag it into here so what happens is right away this sequence is created it was named after the image you can see so earth is right here if I hit the play up here it will show what's in the video I can also click here and it's going to show it inside here where I can do some editing here but I'll talk about that a little later now I'm gonna go hit control Z on this one and remember that just undoes all the actions that I've done so it goes back in history now I'm going to show you a different way to create a sequence and that's going up here file new and then sequence notice that you can also hit ctrl n so those shortcuts are very handy to use and as you get to know them will save you a lot of time you can use the sequence presets if you go through and maybe you find a certain settings that you would like to use or you can customize these too so you can go through and choose custom up top here and then you'll be able to choose your own frame size sample rate and so on it so I'm just gonna use the presets here and I'm gonna hit OK and you can see I have my secrets now to import my media into my sequence and I already showed you that with one-way they're just dragging I could drag into here so I'll drag it onto my video one track and you'll be able to see it right here so right now it's saying the settings aren't the same so I have a I'll say change setting sequence so the video clip didn't match on that one and now notice I can drag things around on this one using my selection and I'll show you that a little bit more of the editing I can also if I double click over here I can import this way and I can also go up to my file and if I go to my import you notice there's the control I if you click those two together hit those two you'll get the import option there so a number of different ways you can import so I'll bring in a few more clips and let's say I'll bring in my intro I could drag it right into here so from there and then I can drag onto my timeline from here so that's how you start your sequences import your media and remember you can choose different types of media on this so if I go back to this again you'll have your audio so if I bring in my audio I have images that I can choose on this one too so here's an image and you can see as I bring it into here I have how the audio will look how the image looks on this one and as I preview different ones as a double-click on them the show up here I can change the option of how it looks down here from a list view and the colors of it you can see that the images are more of a pink and you have your mp4 your video more of this bluish purple and you have your green for your audio on it you can also change how large this looks so if you wanted a larger option of this you can see I can change it if I scroll over it will actually show the video in it to hear so that's just how you're getting start it with your media now in you're ready to start bringing it to your Timeline and start some basic editing so let's show
5:53

Source window options

you some of the options with the source window which is right here where the earth is so if I go ahead and double click on I can see the if I double click on this one and hit play you'll be able to see a New Year's Eve on it from Times Square if I wanted to go through and only see the audio on it if I just click on this you'll see the audio as it gets through so the breakdown of it or you can switch back down back over to the video the other thing is you have an option depending on what resolution you want it to play back for you adhere to so you can see how it can switch there a handy option is this camera to take a still shot so from a video if you get to a part where you want to take a still shot from it just simply click on export frame and you're going to get this option here where you can export a frame and if this is checked it's gonna import it right back into your media so I'll hit OK and you can see now I have this media so this is an image you can see by the pink right here that if I hit play it's no longer a video it's just an image that I can bring in so I'm gonna go back to the video here so also in this video I can bring it into my
7:04

Trim in source window

timeline and do a little editing from here so let's say if I was clicking here and I want to dis at this beginning part I can mark in and let's say over here I want it to be an out so if I click here now in this grayed out area if I go ahead and go insert I have this inside my project now I way below the different part so I'm just dragging it back into my project you can see with the selection tool I have it highlighted I can move it around the one thing is if you're on top of another video so if I drag this over notice what happens to the other video right here if I bring it back it just cut it I'm gonna go to control Z and it's the same thing if you I'm just gonna delete this if you brought it in if I put my playhead over top of here and I go ahead and bring it in it does the same thing so just beware where you're moving it over but with control Z you can simply get go backwards on it so I'm just gonna go ahead and bring in this entire clip I'm gonna drag it over here just for my media so I showed you how to do a little bit of editing basic editing here I just
8:17

Viewing options & managing timeline

want to show you some of the options that you have for viewing you viewing your timeline so as I scroll through I can move through just by scrolling on my mouse I can move the timeline back and forth if I hold alt down it changes how large of a sequence so I can zoom way out or in here and I'm just going to move this as i zoom it's gonna go to the individual frames as I get smaller and smaller so this bakes a really good if you want to do some really detail work as you start dragging the playhead through I can also change that right through here by dragging at the bottom getting it to where you want it I'm always changing mine all the time as I'm working on it notice we have some different video tracks your video 1 video 2 video 3 and at the bottom we have our audio tracks I can simply add more all the time by right-clicking and then you can see how I can add or delete tracks through here tracks are really good when you're adding working with things like green screen and you have u2 or do any things that you're gonna have your different layers on where you can add and manipulate each track by itself so a few other things if you wanted to stretch out and see if I grab right here as I get the handle you can see as I drag it it'll give me a little different view so if you wanted to watch your video through here I'm just going to drag my playhead around so you can see it gives you a few different options so you can kind of set these things up as you would like you have it if you want to lock your track if you go ahead and lock it now you're not going to be able to do anything to it so if you know if a certain track you don't want to have it moved go ahead and lock it and you won't be able to change it you have your visibility here too so if I go ahead and click this you'll be able to everything is still there but you cannot see it so the same thing sometimes with audio I'll go ahead and mute it for that reason so I'm just going to go to mute here if I go ahead and mute it here just because I don't want to hear it over and over again but if I press that then it will go away but simply unclick it so those are some just options with your managing of it of the timeline to get the most out of it when you're working some other things you can do is
10:40

Cut, Copy, Paste

take advantage of the control X control C control V which is your cut copy and paste you can also right-click and do the same thing with cut and copy and paste but I find the shortcuts message faster so if I wanted this click if I wanted to out I could control exit and then click somewhere else and get control V and it would put it back in or else I could just make a copy really quickly of it by hitting the ctrl C and going back and hitting the control V and remember what I said before make sure you have things lined up or it will cut but we can go control Z to go backwards
11:18

Undo with History

or we could go back to the history so another thing to take a look at is go over here and we can see the history of all your past moves and so you can go back in time to just go back where you want to see all the past actions that you have made sometimes clips are too
11:35

Change duration of clips

long and you need to shorten them up and there's two different ways you can shorten them I've already muted these so you won't hear the audio on these but if I'm on my selection tool and I just bring it to the end of a clip and drag and bring it in I made it shorter but I cut off part of it so maybe you're okay with cutting off part of your clip to make it fit but you can also change the duration of it so for example with mine here let's just click on okay we'll use this clip here so I'm just going to make sure I have the visual on I had the eye off and if I go over to this one a lot of times so this is really slow this intro that I have right here and if I want to speed that up where I need to go to is if it's not showing hold down on your mouse and go to the rate stretch tool right here so I have that selected now all you have to do is drag to how long you want it so if I drag it even shorter let's drag it a little shorter you can see now the whole clip is there but this is much faster so those are two different ways to just change the duration of your clip
12:46

Razor tool

another way to make some quick edits to the different tracks is to use the razor tool so just simply click on the razor tool and you'll be able to go to any part and clip them and you can always delete it every part so if I go to my selection tool if I wanted a fart gone I could hit delete and remember you can always control Z and go back and fix it but if you wanted to do some quick trims and I use this quite a bit use the razor tool over here and then you can cut things off and delete them before we get into our special effects transitions let's look at a couple other things with
13:24

Adjust audio

audio so I have this Audio attached to this notice as I moved it around before I'm on my selection tool it's always together you can unlink these if you simply right click on these and go unlink now those two will be separated and you can move them around but other than that they'll come in when they'll come and connect it and you can just unlink it on it so I'm just going to go back control Z to get it back to normal so the other thing with audio if I hit play here notice how this is going into the red of course it's a party and it's people are shouting but you can adjust this through the master volume down below here so if I have so down below you can see this master volume I have already selected it open here I can adjust this line here so if I start dragging this line yeah you notice that's at minus three I can keep fall drag it a bit here I'll go even more here's what's a minus twelfth I hit play now notice that the levels have dropped on it I can also just click on this here and enter in the number so if I wanted to put in minus 20 I can do the sort of like that and adjust it so if you notice that your audio levels are spiking and you want to change it just take a look at the master at the bottom there the other thing with video notice this image
14:48

Changing the frame on video

up here was a different size so this video based on the settings that I set in the sequence didn't quite match now any of these things you can change the size to by simply dragging the corner to it you can actually even rotate so if you ever go to the corner of these and get the handle you can rotate them remember with your layers whatever if I put this one on top of it here of a layer I'm just gonna make sure I put the playhead over and play it over both videos you'll see it on top so it's whatever the bottom one on here is the one at the very back here but let's say if I wanted this to fit to the size I can drag the corners or the other thing I can do is right click on it and actually on the clip so if I go to it and right click on this one and I just go to where did it go here I'm gonna go to right here set to frame size and then it will go and fit in the size here so when it's playing on it so just some adjustments you can make when you get dragged different footage media into the into Premiere Pro or a lot of times it'll make ask for the adjustments too but this is just some ways that you can make some more adjustments to it so
16:08

Adding effects in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

before I showed you how to add some simple effects to the audio into the video just by some grabbing the handles of it but we can also click on any of the media whether it be an like this one so if I go over this one let's say if I I'm gonna just set this one to frame size here and then you can see right away as soon as I do that counts as and effects it will label each one so if I go over here if I wanted this one to set to frame size you can see right away just it labels it with effects with any of these where there be audio image or video if I go up to effect controls you can actually see what you're able to do with each clip so if I click on this one right here which is an image you can see I can change the position the scale rotation opacity and if I make sure these are on fit so if you click on any of these if they're not fully open just click them open to see what you can do but if I wanted to change the let's say the spot at this one if I go to this right here so you can see it and I adjust the location of it the position it changes and anytime you can hit these reset buttons to put it back so if I wanted to change the opacity of something I could just simply click in here let's turn it to 50% and now it's see-through to show you if I put it on top of the other clip and drag my playhead over you can see how I can see through it because it's only at 50% there so the other thing is I'm just going to drag this back over here I can click on my audio and get different adjustments to so I can play with the levels of it and the making adjustments to make it get to get it as close to I want as possible here so just make sure you click on each clip to see what are the possible under effect controls so another way to add effects and s if you go down below here if I click on effects here let's say I'll just start with transitions so with video transitions now I can click through here and I'll just add a simple across dissolve I just need to drag it over if I drag it to the end and now I I'll just hit play here and it cross dissolve some out I'm just gonna hit control Z on that if I had to can if I wanted to add it in between I can just simply drag it between the two and now I have this nice cross dissolve and you can play with different ones on it so if I click on the cross dissolve you notice that we have some options up top in the effect controls that you can play with duration of it so if you wanted to change it up a little bit you can go ahead and play with these options the other thing is we also have our audio transitions if you wanted to add any of those just simply by doing the same thing if you wanted to drag them over drag them to the audio and as I click on them you can do the same adjustments to it now with the video effects same thing you're gonna drag them over on top of the video so let's say if I wanted to blur I have blur open here and we'll just grab this one and I'm gonna drag it onto this now it might not look like there's anything there but what I want you to notice whenever you drag any of these effects over now they're going to be in the effect controls you got to make sure you're on the correct clip so if I go you can see now I have the blur that I selected here and it's set at zero so now I can change it to let's say 50% and you can see how it adjust the blur so all these things any of the effects that you add to the individual Clips make sure you go up and check through the effect controls after and make sure you open them up and see all the different adjustments that you can add to each of them to route text or
20:04

Adding text in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

anything just go to the text tool here so I'm gonna put it right over top where I've selected but I'm going to select the text tool and draw the size that I want with the red handles here and all I'm just gonna write happy new years here and if I want to move this around make sure you have the move tool and you can see at this point I can move it around to different parts of the screen to put it where I would like now the other thing is I can still have more effects on this and I can move this around notice it created that put this on top of the new layer if I want to move this around somewhere I can do that so if I wanted it on top of a different part just simply move it to where you would like now to add effects to this make sure you have this clicked on and then go to the effect controls and you'll notice that there's a text option here that you can go through you can choose your different fonts on it as they go through you can choose whether what type you want depending on what how it matches up with the font how you'd like it centered and there's many different ones you can even add a stroke to it I don't think this example will work very good but I'll give it a try it's probably a little thin I can up my stroke here let's go three well I'm seeing a little bit now I'll add it a little bit more let's go with 10 and then I have a stroke around it so you can go through you can add a shadow to it and all these different effects that you can add to it to get it looking very nice and I like this compared to a lot of the other programs how you can do everything right into this one and then adjust it with the move one and remember you have rate up top here so it's the same thing if ever you want to control ctrl C and then move it somewhere else and control V you can copy it so I just put it on top of the wrong one but let's go there and now I have it also again over here so that's just how you use some text inside Adobe Premiere let's move on to green-screen here so you can do those cool effects if
22:11

Green screen in Adobe Premiere Pro CC

you're working with green screen with Premiere Pro let me show you a little lesson how to do that so I'm going to bring in first of all this times square and this is going to be some traffic here and you can see as a dragged through it and now I need some green screen footage I already have it so I'm gonna grab the this chickens these chickens that I have and I'm gonna drag it right over top so you can't see the Times Square anymore because I need to get rid of the green here so what I have to do is add an effect to it it's the same way what I showed you before so I'm gonna go over to my effects here video effects and I'm going to go to keying here so there's King and then I have ultra key here at the bottom I need to drag that on to my green screen layer here and now I'm gonna go up to my effect controls make sure I have I'm selected on the right one I'm going to close some of these other ones here because I got too many open there's my ultra key right there but I'm gonna open that one up and then so what you can see is the key color so what I'm gonna do is select this eyedropper here and go over and select the green and automatically gets rid of it now I can if sometimes depending on the quality of the green screen how much lighting and everything you might have to play depending on with the edges and you have all these controls that you can go through here to try to adjust to get the best job on your green screen so remember you can go over to this if I wanted to change the size of these after I can resize these chickens and put them on the crosswalk so I'm gonna just go back here and I'll hit play I got music playing and now I have those chickens on the crosswalk with all the traffic going by so remember the adjustments if it doesn't come out clear and if you're taking green screen on yourself make sure you have lots of lights light try to get rid of those shadows in the background it'll make it that much easier when you're all done you're ready
24:10

Exporting your finished project

to export it it's different than saving so before we've saved it as an Adobe project but we need to export it so if you want to go to YouTube or put in a different format go down to exports or file export media when this opens up you notice that we have our output and our source here I'll just talk a little bit about the output first with the output right now it's on a preset that we already have I'll show you how to customize this we can change the output name just by simply clicking on this and giving it a different name and then hitting save you can see it's going to be at avi but if you want to do some customization turn it to an h. 264 here and notice what you can do is you go through all these different settings and you can click on these and adjust if you wanted to make adjustments to it click off it you can see how you can make the adjustments to this rate through here to the source if I go over here I can do a few different things I can crop this so if I didn't want the whole if I only wanted a certain part of the video showing I can crop it and then but make sure you match the source so that the video becomes the size of there so we want to make sure it outputs correctly we can also choose what part of the video that we want to export so if I move these handles to customize the range and export it it's going to only export that part so I'm just gonna go back to output and as I said make sure you match your source on this if I go back to my what it would default to the first time notice that everything then I don't have that option in my different customizations change so just go ahead and hit export when you feel like you have all the settings the way you want and it's going to go ahead very quickly because this is a little very long video export it to the place I have and then I'll have that video do you want to upload it to YouTube share it differently you have a lot of different options so I hope this video helped you today in understanding Adobe Premiere Pro there's so much to it if you want to learn more about it let me know in the comments down below and I can make some more videos thanks for watching this week and I'll see you next time
