How much of today's work could technically be done by machines? McKinsey Global Institute research finds that 58% of Europe’s current work hours could be automated with AI and robotics. But most jobs combine tasks machines can do with tasks they cannot – from exercising judgment in complex situations to working with people and adapting to the unexpected. MGI Senior Fellow Maria Jesus Ramirez break down key takeaways from "Agents, robots, and us: How AI reshapes work and skills in Europe." Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00)

How much of today's work could technically be done by machines? This is a starting point for understanding what happens to jobs and skills. I'm Maria Jesus Ramirez, a senior fellow at the Mckini Global Institute and co-author of agents, robots, and US, how AI reshapes work and skills in Europe. We analyze thousands of jobs tasks and match them to current technologies. About 58% of Europe's current work hours could be automated with AI enabled agents and robots. Here's how it breaks down. At the bottom are tasks machines can do. Routine administrative work or moving objects and cleaning. At the top are tasks machines can't do. From exercising judgment in complex situations to working with people and adapting to the unexpected. Most jobs cut across these areas, combining tasks machines can do with those they can't. And what's technically possible is not the same as what we will see in practice. So what does this mean? More work will shift from doing to directing machines. But human judgment and context still matter.
