How did two businesses in the same economy in the same month have two very different economic outcomes? And if you are a small business owner and you are struggling with the economy right now, this is for you. I have been a business owner for 25 years. I have been consulting business owners for almost 10 years. I have been through every single economic cycle you can name, and they are normal. Let me tell you that. They happen, they're going to happen, and how you react to them is what matters. In March of 2020, I talked to two very different business owners, and the difference between them was not in their industry. It was in the way they responded to the stress of the economy. One of them was in a straight-up panic. Despite the fact that she had longevity in her business and knew what to do in normal settings, she could not figure out what to do in this setting. Another one was brand new, had no clients, had just launched when the state shut down, but within 4 months during the shutdown was making 10K a month working part-time as a solopreneur. The difference between them was one of them was in reactive mode, and one of them was in responsive mode. One of them was freaking out and doomsaying, and the other one was saying, "How do I make adjustments to fit this economy, not what the economy was 3 months ago? " How you react to the natural changes that are going to happen as a business owner is going to differentiate whether or not you actually survive.
