LCLS-II High Energy | Innovating for an X-ray laser upgrade

Essentially, LCLS-II it's like a huge microscope which is driven by accelerator. Doubling the energy of the electrons which are accelerated there allows to extend the range of that microscope. Fermilab at the time of LCLS-II we were at the forefront of worldwide SRF R& D, so we were kind of a natural fit. Fermilab built half of the LCLS-II cryomodules. Half was built by Jefferson Lab. Accelerators are simple things. You need something to accelerate beam and bend the beam and focus the beam. So, cavities accelerate the beams and then there are magnets which you know steer the beam and focus the beam. Another extremely critical role of Fermilab was actually introducing two critical innovations. One was nitrogen doping which enabled doubling the efficiency of the superconducting cavities used in this accelerator and then building the actual cryomodules. So, this is amazing achievement for the whole team at Fermilab, at Jefferson Lab, of course at SLAC. It's really a testament to what the national labs can achieve together and these innovations will also be useful now for many future particle accelerators.
