Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00)

All right, so the day has finally come where GoPro gives us a massive sensor upgrade, a 1in sensor. You know how long I've been waiting for this? I mean, it's been almost 10 years since I posted my very first episode on this channel. And every time they release a new camera, it's like, okay, is this where they're going to give us massive hardware changes? This is what I've been waiting for. So, here's a little 360 twirl of the GoPro. And notice it's on this little electronic suction cup from Small Rig. By the way, this episode brought to you by Small Rig. So, we got all kinds of goodies. We will definitely be using this. So, one of the things I always try to do is show you as much footage out of this camera as possible. So, whenever I cut to a camera that is not this mission one, I'll put an asterisk right here. So, if we cut to the FX3 over there, oh, look, there's an asterisk there letting you know this is footage that's not out of this camera, obviously, because I only have one of these cameras and I need to have this camera to film this camera. And at the end, like I do with all my other videos now, I will tell you my favorite and least favorite things about this GoPro Mission 1. Anyways, I'm really excited to test out the 1080p at 960 frames per second. What the Okay, so as someone that loves slow motion probably more than I should, it is a dream to have basically a,000 frames per second in a little tiny action camera. Let me go ahead and turn off the color grade, which I admit is very tasty, but I think it's important to see what the footage looks like coming straight out of the camera. So, this is real 960 frames per second being recorded. It's none of that artificial frame blending stuff that you sometimes see. Now, if the clip normally looks like this, if we shoot it at 960 frames per second and unfold it, oh my gosh, this is so fun to get creative with. So, if we play back at 24 frames per second, that is basically a 40 time slow motion. Now, you can only get this in a 10second burst mode. So, basically, I'm going to plant this camera and I'm going to give Carrie the phone and she's going to hit it right before I cross it. But that 10 seconds basically turns into uh 10 * 40 is 400 seconds and it's like what? 5 6 minutes and 40 seconds or so. That's right. I just did that in my head. The years of Kuman that my mom forced me to do is paying off here. Wait, hold up. Let me just see that shot one more time with that deep orange Mad Max color grade. Oh, maybe a little over the top, but man, it is juicy. Now, you're not going to get crazy grading these 960 shots because the settings are definitely limited in this burst mode. Like, you don't get the option to shoot 10 bit log here or really any color settings. Now, the image isn't going to be perfect here. I mean, aside from it shooting just 1080p, there definitely is more noise in the shadows. You can see it when I'm back lit here, especially, but definitely less noticeable on the shots that are more front lit. But again, when we consider that this is a GoPro shooting almost 1,000 frames per second, this is phenomenal. Now, say we need to maintain a certain level of quality and maybe shoot 10 bit log, we have 240, 4K 240 frames per second is awesome cuz it's continuous recording. So, I can just set the camera down and ride past it and I just have this like really cool super slow-mo shot. But yeah, looking at the 4K 240 footage, it is still sharp. It is still clean. It is still 10 bit log. The only thing you don't get is open gate. So, 4x3 aspect ratio. To get that, we'll need to either go to 4K120 or drop the resolution. I've got the uh camera mounted right here. It's actually a necklace mount. I was going to actually use the chest mount that Small Rig makes, but this necklace mount actually works good. Like, without these two extra straps, it would definitely be flopping around everywhere. At first, I had it up here like this, but my helmet kept bumping it. So, it's kind of nice that it kind of locks in at a 90° angle or a full 180. I also have a DJ M3 just kind of taped on the inside of my helmet there internally recording. GoPro is also working on a set of microphones as well, which I'm kind of curious about. Anyways, behind me is Castle Rock. This is one of the main reasons why I wanted to come here. By the end of today, I want to be able to ride all the way to the tiptop of that thing and not fall off the other side because it is straight down. App installed as well, so I can kind of monitor my shot. I'll go for a little baby attempt. Holy, that is uh I my pants a little bit. But I love that when you come down here and you overshoot, you just fall into this ditch. All right, Carrie, how did I do? — You didn't go that high. — My wife is very unimpressed. Now, while I practice, why don't I answer some questions from all of you on Instagram? Mr. Harry asks, "Has the color science changed compared with previous generations? " So, yeah, I believe before the default look was vibrant, which we do still have here. So, we can still get that classic GoPro look, but by default, the Mission One is on natural. But there is also a cinematic mode. And looking at them side by side, I'm kind of liking the cinematic look. It has less of that digital sharpening, contrast, and it feels a little bit softer, but natural definitely makes a lot of the detail in the dirt pop. So, I could definitely see a time and place for all of them. And then, of course, there's the new GoPro Log 2, which is super duper flat. And oh, look, it's Frank. He asked, "What is the nearest focusing distance? " Let's find out. I think I'm just going to film all my videos like this now. Like, I am so comfortable. I have it suction cuped

Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00)

onto this backboard right here. So, if I'm just like right here, I'm definitely out of focus. But how out of focus? I mean, you're probably like, I don't know, 6 in for my face or so. So, technically, they say 2 ft. So, this is me fully extended out. And I think that's at least 2 ft here. But if I bring a little bit of arm bend into this, get a little more comfortable. This is what I need a measuring tape. But, uh, this is comfortable vlogging distance. How's it look? definitely be a lot easier if I had some sort of grip or tripod or stick. Small rig actually makes a really good one here. It's this one. But look, it telescopes. Turns into a tripod. But right now, this tripod is what, like I want to say a foot away from the camera. Is it too close where it looks blurry? But this right here is what makes it one of my favorite little tripods. Of course, next to the uh Tribeex tripod in partnership with Potato Jet. It's kind of a nice little handle so you don't have to worry about dropping it. So, this clip right here just makes it so much easier to just take it around without having to figure out a spot in your bag to put it. You know, I used it a lot for riding and just hook it onto the backpack and it's always quick access. By the way, the camera's also attached to me through this magnetic pendant. Looks a little bit like bondage, doesn't it? But a regular necklace does not work when you have the weight of something like this GoPro. It just dangles too much. So, that those extra straps actually really make a difference. This is kind of like Small Rig product placement inception, isn't it? But I feel like they're like kind of the perfect sponsor for this video because when you have an action camera, it's all about where you mount it and rig it. But yeah, this is like a very comfortable arm bend. I mean, that definitely is the downside of a larger sensor is the depth of field gets shallower. But honestly, I feel like they've done a pretty good job because it's not awful. So Jasper says, of course, compared to a similar DJI product, is GoPro still lacking? Looks like it's split screen time. What do you think of the rig? It's just like a bunch of small rig things just kind of like hodge podge together. I just put it together real quick. Okay, don't judge me. — I also want to switch between the different microphones that's built into these cameras here. Audio from the iPhone. I think we all know what an iPhone sounds like. And then there's the DJI Action 6, which has a bit of this like crispness to it. But all three of these cameras, as soon as they're wind, sound trash. One of the things I'm actually really excited about is I saw a photo of the media mod that's coming for the GoPro and it has a dead cap built into it. So, I'm actually really excited to test that media mod out just for that microphone. I mean, for me personally, I never really trust any onboard microphones because if there's any bit of wind that hits the microphone just right, it completely just ruins the audio. Oh, by the way, this is the uh GoPros Mission One Pro, which just has a few extra bells and whistles over the Mission One, but I am also very excited for the uh GoPro Mission ILS to come out. So, ILS stands for the interchangeable lens system. I believe that one just has the same hardware as this, but instead of this lens that's built on here, it's going to have an interchangeable lens mount that's micro four/ thirds. Man, I'm very excited for that one because this sensor is definitely capable with some good glass on there. It definitely will turn it into a different animal. When I was shooting the 960 frames per second on here, you know, I'm stuck with a wide angle lens. And there's so many times where I'm like, man, I wish I could slap a 50 mil on here and get these same shots. I mean, I'm excited for it. By the way, editing Jean, how is this footage looking? Which camera looks the best? The iPhone wins. Now, could you please stop filming so much so I could catch up on some editing? I'm just kidding. Imagine that's just how I end the video. Now, no doubt that the iPhone does a really good job with their colors, but the phone having the smallest sensor of the three, when you're dealing with limited light and a lot of movement, you have to compensate by slowing down that shutter speed and we get motion blur. So, I'll pause it a few different times when it just happens so much more frequently as soon as we hit dim lighting. So, this is where the iPhone really starts to get shredded apart. Now, the DJI Action 6 does a better job keeping that shutter speed tight, but they still have to capture that exposure somewhere. So, if we punch into this shot right here, we can really see how much gain is being applied on the DJI Action 6. And along with gain comes noise. Now, all these cameras will have a certain amount of denoising, but what's the trade-off to that? You lose some clarity, you lose some sharpness, which you could definitely see here on the Action 6. we punch in here and the iPhone has kind of just run wild with exposure to stay within its window of dynamic range. Now, I feel like the different cameras look better depending on the shot, but going through all this footage, the Mission One feels the most consistent and has the least issues. And GoPro seems to also have the best stabilization. And if we just look frame by frame at my footsteps here, it kind of just sums up everything we just went over. Impact Media asks, is it good as a sports camera, mountain biking, mounted on a helmet? And I would say, yeah, it is a little bit bigger. heavier, but the added difference in weight is not something I really notice, but the added performance I get out of the camera is something I definitely notice. There's one line that literally goes all the way to the top and back. Okay, so I just have to get over that. I think I could do it, but I'm afraid. Okay, if I'm going to make it all the way to the top, I need some good

Segment 3 (10:00 - 15:00)

settings here. You know what? I'm going to go 8K. Why not? And once I pop it into 10 bit, that also gives me the option to go to GoPro Log 2 and let's set the vet rate to max. It's kind of like maximizing the settings on the camera. All right, I know exactly the line I need to do. I'm going to do it. Here goes nothing. Oh my goodness. Little higher than I thought you'd go on that one. — Well, I have to commit. You're at the top. You literally there's a lip that you have to leap off of. Once you enter that zone, there's no turning back. One of the first things you will notice about the Mission 1 is this like little rubber lens hood. So basically it just slips off like that. And then oh yes, the lens is of course interchangeable. Remember that one time when GoPro made an unreplaceable lens, the Hero8 and everyone just like lost their What I do like about it is that it does help keep the sun out of the lens and also it is nice to just set it down and not worry about like the lens actually scraping against anything. It is something that takes a little bit of fiddling once in a while. But overall I do actually like it and I could just go straight onto a tripod/ quarter20. But I also have those flip out feet. I feel like rigging is kind of like Legos for adults, you know? It's quite fun. Rigs on. All right. So, we'll go ahead and grab a few more shots in GoPro Log 2. You know, the super flat color setting if you want maximum control over the image and dynamic range. So, the good news is that it packs a lot of information in there. So, if you're fairly comfortable with color grading, you'll see that it has a lot of room to play in there. Right now, the sun is still right up there. So, it's very bright out here, darker in here. Let's see if Peta's comfy. Oh, she's just chilling. He's looking cozy in there. But on the other hand, if you're not at all comfortable with grading, I would avoid this setting. Even if you apply your transform lot, a lot of your shots may come out underexposed, which is actually not a bad thing. The GoPro is just really trying to protect those highlights. You know, my video on the DJI Actions, I've always said they expose too hot and blow out shots. But basically, if you plan on shooting GoPro Log 2, just be prepared for some basic correction. There still is the flat picture profile if you want just like minor tweaks, but I didn't see the original GoPro Log in here, which I feel like it would have been nice to have for those who are already comfortable working with GoPro Log, but maybe they'll add that in a later firmware. I am still on beta. So, Michael and Dan want to know about battery life. So, the camera comes with a handful of presets in there. One of them is endurance mode, which shoot at 1080p 30. So, I figured I'll film the drive to Denver, Colorado. And I was pretty shocked that it literally filmed the entire drive. All right. So, now it is at 1%. 4 hours and 49 minutes. Oh, so close to 5 hours. So, in real world use where I'm waking up the screen to reframe and all that, I'm getting just shy of 5 hours, which is crazy. I mean, the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas or New York City to Washington DC, it'll film that whole drive in one battery. I tried again without touching it to see if I could cross that 5 hour mark, and I did by 1 minute. Yay, go me. But here's a handy little runtime chart I got from GoPro. They always tend to do these in perfect conditions. So, I've been finding I get about like maybe 10% less. So, like in 4K 30 in 4x3 open gate, I got about like 2 hours and 50 minutes. So, anything approaching 3 hours in a high- res setting is top tier. This is the battery. It's an enduro 2 8. 3 W hours. So, bigger than DJI is a 7. 55. There's also this dual charger which charges pretty fast. So, with this dual charger and the efficiency of the Mission One, you could basically record for ever. So, other goodies, the quick release. This is for the Hero 13, but it should have no problem fitting the Mission One cuz it is the same mount. But this is kind of interesting. It gives you your quarter20 on the bottom, but also back here. And also feet on the back. And the bottom actually kind of looks like an Arca-Swiss. Is it? It is. This is a backstrap mount. So, action mount with Velcro and it is rubberized in here right here. Oh, and since this shoot the feet out this way. I just go like this. Got to feed the little feet through which always is my least favorite part which is why it's so nice to just have a little quick attach shoulder mount too. I feel like I'm slowly turning into like a futuristic cyborg. Joseph asks, "Is it good for FPV? " Um, I guess only if you want your images to look incredible. I mean, this is just a simple fly over. I shot it at 4K 120 and yes, I did apply the MadMax grade. I I'm sorry I couldn't resist. But look at this. This to me does not look like it's coming out of an action camera. Like it looks like I sent a Komodo on a C lifter up there, right? Or is it just the color grade? Quickly get it to 709. H. Just go back to MadMax. Oh, okay. That's better. Now I can breathe. Oh, and perfect timing. Some riders showed up and they said I could chase them. Don't mind if I do. All right, we just lost the sun and this is where GoPros generally start to fall apart. Hopefully, this is still okay.

Segment 4 (15:00 - 19:00)

This landscape is crazy. Wo! Epicness. So, the Golaris asks, "How good is the low light compared to the Action 6? " Well, this is your lucky day. I found a nice dark alley for us to go to. Follow me, guys, to this dark alley. Trust me, I got candy. Now, even though GoPro has the bigger and better sensor, DJI still has some tricks. So, first of all, its low light mode is kind of its own special mode where it does its own type of processing and it really helps bring up the image and kind of cleans it up. But sometimes that could look a little bit processed and you're kind of stuck with that. And also, it has a variable aperture that can actually open up to an f2. 0, which definitely brings in more light. But of course, that also means that your close focus is not going to be as good. So, we definitely see a loss in our minimum focus distance here. Here I look a little bit blurry in the DJI, but when you are in complete darkness and fighting for exposure, the faster lens wins. So, hats off to DJI for just doing an overall great job with low light. You can see how dark it is by how bright the moon looks up there. Neil asks, "Can the older GoPro 13 Black lenses work with the GoPro Mission 1? " No, but I wish they could. You know, that little macro lens that they had for the Hero 13, that was kind of cool. If they had that for this Mission One, I'd be all about it. But basically, they're saying that's what the ILS is for because it'll have, you know, all the different micro four/ thirds lenses available to it. Callum Mcnite says, "If I'm going to use a micro four/ thirds lens anyways, would it be better to use a traditional camera? " I would say, yeah, like, you know, Panasonic GH6 is going to definitely have like autofocus and utilize the full micro four/ thirds sensor size opposed to the 1 in. I don't see the GoPro ILS being like a mirrorless camera. I mean, it's manual focus, right? I see it being a tiny cinema camera that is super rigable. Toe says, "How will the stabilization work with different lenses when it's all manual lenses with no pins? " So, from what they've told me with the ILS, you'll be able to tell it what kind of lens that is on there and it'll be able to apply its stabilization algorithm accordingly. But again, I haven't tested it. It's still a little bit later in the year for the ILS to come out. I have so many questions, too. And then Justin asks the question we're all wondering. Is it good? Um, I think it depends on who you are and what you're looking for, but I'll tell you my favorite and least favorite thing. I want to say my least favorite thing about it have some nitpicking things like I still don't like how GoPro names their files. Like if one recording runs long, the file gets split, but the second half of that file will be like all the way at the bottom of the list if you have it alphabetically just because of the way they But also the new buttons on the Mission One. I really like the buttons. They're so much more fun to push, but also easier to push. A lot of times I'll accidentally switch to the wrong mode and start shooting and I'll be like, "Wait, what? Why am I in time-lapse mode right now, you know? But my favorite things, um, I think it's just the camera that I've been hoping for. The 1-in sensor obviously just makes all the images and dynamic range so much better. And GoPro, I feel like just really did a good job on executing the 1-in sensor. But as a slow motion addict, that 960 frames per second burst mode, I mean, sure it's 1080p and has a 10-second buffer and, you know, you can't shoot in log and 10 bit and all that stuff, but man, it's still almost 1,000 frames per second. Anyone that loves slow motion understands how special that is. That's like phantom camera level slow motion. And it's a GoPro, so you don't have to feel bad about beating it up and chucking rocks at it from tires because worst case scenario, you just pop off the lens and swap it out for another one. You're good to go. So, I mean, that is freaking awesome. I'm going to go back edit this and post this tomorrow morning if I can edit. I'm probably just not sleeping tonight, but you know, life of a YouTuber. I actually did it. Like, I was editing here and watch the sun come up and uh I'm tired, but hope the video was worth it. Thanks again to Small Rig for sponsoring us today. They obviously make a ton of different stuff, but I'll link my favorite stuff that they make down below. And good thing is they're not camera specific. So if you're like, "Oh, screw this GoPro. I'm going to get the Insta 360A Pro instead. " You know, Small Rig makes stuff for that camera, too. So get yourself some high quality goodness Small Rig stuff. Now I am uh going to go to sleep. So good night. Go away. I need to sleep.
