So, we finally got our hands on the brand new DJI Osmo Pocket 4. 4K 240 frames per second. They have officially raised the bar on slow motion. The 1-in sensor should give us better dynamic range in D-Log, not D-Log M, but D-Log. Design-wise, very similar, but with some tweaks like new buttons and a way to attach this light. And 107 gigs of internal storage. So, if you forget your SD card at home, you'll survive. Bigger battery, better smart tracking, and all these other things that I'm going to test out. And at the end, I will be sure to tell you the things I love about this Pocket 4 as well as the things I hate about it. So, let's put some miles on this camera and take it around this beautiful city of — Vancouver, Canada. I love how we're all the way out here in Canada and you decided to wear this shirt. Hey, I'm here to support my team, the LA Kings. — even watch hockey. I've never seen him. — a lot of hockey, trust me. — Yeah, right. — Trust me, bro. — The availability of DJI products in the USA, it's currently questionable. So, we're here in Canada for the week. — off, how is the default look? You take the camera out of the box and hit record without changing any settings. This is how it looks. I would say in most cases, very similar to the Pocket 3 when we check out the split screen. But, once in a while, we'll see the effects of the better hardware and the dynamic range it provides. And sometimes in skin tones, it looks less processed and a little bit more natural. But, at the hockey game, the biggest thing I noticed was the ability to zoom in further. 4X zoom opposed to the 2X. Now, they're both digital zoom, so it's not going to be as clean as an optical zoom, you know, zooming with a lens. But, it's very nice to have for casual use, especially with this new button where tap it once for a 2X zoom and you tap it twice for a 4X zoom. The quick access is very useful cuz sometimes a fight breaks out in front of you, you just need to go 2X, no, further, 4X. Bam. With the Pocket 3, the fight would have already been over by the time I zoomed in. Dude, hockey is awesome. It's the best. — Now, I'm dying to test the slow motion, but in 4K 240, you can't actually zoom in. So, we went and got a basketball and we're on the search for this cool-looking basketball court called the Pink Alley. Is this it? Oh, we're here. — Oh, no, did they take down the hoop? — There's no way. There it was. There it is. — It was right there. Oh, man. — Oh, dude, they want no one here. Dunk it. I'm too short. I guess we can still test out the slow mo. So, here we are in super slow motion. 4K 240 frames per second is finally among us. I thought maybe we might see it in like some high-powered mirrorless camera first, but no, we get it here in the Pocket 4. But, so far, I'm loving 240. I'm playing it back at 24, so 10% speed. So, I can post clips like this and people will be like, "Wow, you could do that cool spinning ball thing on your finger. You're so talented. You're so cool. " They don't need to know that I can only actually do it for like 1 second. And when you put it next to the Pocket 3, you really see how much more power that this Pocket 4 has. We had 240 in the Pocket 3, but only in HD. And I'll go ahead and scale up some of these shots so you can see how much more detail we have on the 4K 240 opposed to the Pocket 3's 1080p 240. Now, it did give us 4K in 120, but the difference between 120 and 240 is pretty significant. Like, to watch back 240 footage, it literally takes double the time. Now, there are some limitations like you can't shoot in D-Log, you can't zoom, you can't use tracking features, but what is nice is that this does have continuous recording in 240. It's not like some cameras where it's like a buffer where you can only shoot a short burst. And actually, I wanted to see how long it would record for and it went for 10 minutes before it overheated. But again, 10 minutes of recording in 240, to play that back, it's like an over an hour and a half, you know, it's like watching a full-length movie. I also thought it was a nice touch that it records audio even in 240. It does save it as a separate audio clip, so you would have to sync it up if you want to use it, but definitely nice to have in case you need it. Now, as fun as the super slow mo is, realistically, I'm looking at this Pocket 4 as a little vlog camera to document some of our adventures. So, let's try that. So, apparently, there's a secret climbing tree somewhere here in Vancouver. If we climb to the top of it, it's supposed to be one of the most epic views ever. But, it's like a secret location. So, we know it's south of this train station here. There's a little riddle, too. It says, "Forget about the queen, the secret tree is closer to a king. " Check it out. First clue, Queen Elizabeth Park. I feel like when it comes to low-effort vlogging, like we're doing right now, it's pretty hard to top this form factor. We get good audio, we get good stabilization cuz it's on a gimbal. The camera and lens is pretty solid. The autofocus is good. — Quality is great. Yeah. — It's not just good, it's great for the size. — Oh, for the size? — Yeah. — It's closer to the king than it is to the queen. — Huh. This is kind of fun. It's like a little treasure hunt. I think we found it. Now, this is it. That's the one. This is awesome. — It's like built for climbing. Apparently, there's a platform you can stand up there. We need to make it to the platform, right? — mean, we? This doesn't look that hard, though. — We'll see. We'll see what happens. I'm also a bit under exposed here, but also, I noticed like in D-Log, it looks under exposed a lot, but luckily, since it's log, I can just always pull it up a
Segment 2 (05:00 - 10:00)
little bit. But, it's funny cuz normally, I feel like it over exposes, so it's almost like the opposite. — Yeah. But, it makes sense. It's probably trying to protect the highlights. — But, this is all auto exposure and everything, so I'm just kind of letting the camera do whatever. But, if I switch into normal color, this is how the auto exposure kind of handles this tree right here. Definitely a lot more exposure just by default. We also have different film looks. So, these are just kind of like filters that you could just bake into your footage. These are not reversible in post, so you do have to commit to them, but you can dial in the percentage of how strong you want the filter to be. I personally don't see myself using this, but if you're going for a certain aesthetic straight out of camera, this is an option. My weapon of choice is definitely just D-Log with just a conversion over so it doesn't look flat. I'm not doing any fancy stylizing or color grading. I really just use it more for repairing certain shots if it's under exposed or over. Let's try to get a few feet up. — Let's try. — Let's just see. Yeah, let's That's what we came here for. Yeah, that. You know what? — I'm afraid of heights. But, you could do a little bit more. — No, I can't. Nope. It's over, dude. I really want to be on the ground right now. Your turn. Let's see how it feels. Okay, this is freaky. — This is freaky. I'm telling you, dude. Just knowing that we're not harnessed up here, I could see why they kept this place a secret cuz people will come up here and break their necks, for sure. The last thing I want to see is potato plinko. My survival adrenaline is already starting to kick in. Woo. I'm like 2/3 of the way up now. I still see that Frank's mic's connected, so wireless transmission working pretty good through all these tree branches. It's also kind of freaky cuz the branches get skinnier as you get higher up. You can see all the way down to the ground. I do like having the zoom, though. — that dolly zoom effect, right? So, if I zoom as I push out. I'm glad that this camera does such a good job stabilizing because my hands are definitely getting a little shaky here. And I made it to the platform. I can sit the camera on it. Woo. — Take advantage of the active track here. Get this thing going up. So, times like this where I need to film myself and Frank isn't up here on this platform with me, there's active track. Now, I've always had trust issues with active tracking, but earlier, I did some tests with the new active track 7. 0 and I was pretty surprised by the results. Let's see if I block him for a second here. One second, two seconds, three seconds. And now I'm over here. I mean, it holds on to you, which is good. And then I cross in front. I'm blocking you. Let's just walk this way together. Let's just We're going to walk this way. Really extreme. — know we're here. Okay, and I'm going to run away. Oh, dude, that's pretty good. It knows you and remembers you. From here, it's going to see more back of my head, so it's going to lose me more. No, it holds on just fine. And I feel like with the Pocket 3, every time I would come back and check on the camera, it would be looking wrong direction. So, a lot of times, it could be more frustrating than it is useful, so I kind of avoided it. So, I actually put this camera right next to the Pocket 3 to see exactly how much better the new active track is. And literally, within the very first shot, the Pocket 3 had already lost us. So, let's run it back. I'm tracking Frank here and it didn't take very long for the Pocket 3 to get confused about who is who. Oh, it's following you. It's different. It's tracking the wrong guy. After the camera gets blocked for a second, they both have the ability to reacquire tracking, but the Pocket 4 is significantly better at it. And out of the five times the Pocket 3 lost us, the Pocket 4 did not lose us even once. It's not even tracking. Yeah, dude, huge difference, huh? But, I'm definitely not saying it's 100% yet. I mean, I tried it at the hockey game and it just kind of kept pinging between the different players. You could also lose it by blasting right past it faster than it could keep up or if you go past the gimbal limits. So, just like before, there is kind of a dead zone for the gimbal on the left side. But, guess what? I made it to the top of the tree and I didn't die. This is nuts. All right, so this is the 4X zoom while I'm in D-Log. But, look at that. What? Okay, but to be honest, though, when it comes to the zoom, Pocket 4 versus the iPhone super telephoto lens, I could even digitally zoom the 8X on the iPhone, so it's quite hard to compete with an iPhone with only one lens. But, sometimes I feel like the zoom is better if I'm not in D-Log, so let me hop out of D-Log real quick. So, this is just standard. I mean, the iPhone's definitely going to be better, but I mean, this is definitely nice to have. There's rumors out there. I'm under an NDA, so I can't really say anything, but there's stuff on the internet talking about other variations of this kind of camera. I dropped my microphone. Oh. — So, I just saw it just go bing bing bing all the way down. But, anyways, this is internal audio now for obvious reasons. But, one of the things that I really love about this camera now is I could actually record four audio channels to a video clip, right? So, channel one would be my microphone, channel two would be Frank's microphone, and channel three and four is the internal microphones in here. Now, you were able to kind of do that in the previous Pocket 3 where it was like backup audio, but back then it was like a separate audio file so you have to
Segment 3 (10:00 - 15:00)
kind of sync it up. What an incredible view from up here though. I got downtown over there and then it looks like another another downtown over there. I mean best view in Vancouver I would say. Anyways, I got a long way down so I better get moving. Found the microphone? Dude, I found it. — Where was it? — It was right here. It was on the opposite side of where you were. Dude, I just want to just go ding ding ding. It's still recording. — Oh, sick. Damn, how's the view? Ooh, pretty epic. — It's a good thing you didn't fall earlier because this would have been you, potato plinko. — So this is what you look like. I can hit the custom button, it just flips over. Hello. I can flip it around, check out the stabilization, right? By default, I think the stabilization goes like 45° and then it just like flips to the side, yeah. So now it just assumes I'm trying to film vertical like this, upside down. What happens here? Okay. And then back to center. I hate onboard lights, but would this be an appropriate time to test out that stupid little fill light? We'll give it a shot. Frank's all about onboard lights. Check this out. Oh my god. You know I'm like paparazzi like, "Oh, miss Paris Hilton. " That is cool. Okay, so no lights. Okay. Can you warm it up though? So there's two buttons up top so one of them will take us to warm and then kind of in the middle and then there's low, medium, high. — Go to low and medium warm. You like it? Yeah, I do like this. I like this a lot to be honest. I like the fact that it's running off the battery off the pocket, not like a separate battery or separate charger. Anyways, this camera's awesome so far. I mean the fact that we're just walking around at night with it and — And it's nice and stable. Yeah, it's low profile. Imagine if I was walking around with my FX3 on a gimbal right now. Yeah, this is more fun. The other one's more work. Hey, that's a good way to put it. So this is low light mode. I mean it is pretty dark out here. It's not night time, but it's night time. Yeah. That makes sense, right? It's not night time. But it's night time. Yeah. That looks pretty bright. Honestly. — Dude, that looks really bright. Now shooting in low light we could shoot in D-Log or the standard normal color or there's also the dedicated low light mode. — Got Pocket 3, Pocket 4 both in the low light mode. So we found the darkest corner of Vancouver we can find. — it's safe to say that there's definitely some improvement here. The colors seem a little bit richer, a little bit less noise. It has less of that super processed look like the Pocket 3, but again the Pocket 3 was still a really good low light camera. Like more than you would think until you start to realize that it can shoot 12,800 ISO with an F2. 0 lens. But what's also new on the Pocket 4 is this low light image enhancement mode which is on by default. So if you're just shooting in regular mode, it seems to just kick on automatically if it detects low light. To me it feels like a very similar type of processing as low light mode, but it's kind of nice that it just kicks on automatically in default mode opposed to having a switch to it. Now D-Log's the only setting that caps out at ISO 6400 so it doesn't push the exposure as far as the other settings, but honestly I think it holds on great unless you're in like extreme low light. — Okay, this battery life kind of insane. We just hit an hour and we're at 72% still. — This battery life test is going to take forever. Oh my gosh. — good problem to have. — Is it? Yeah, I think so. — I want to move on with my day. — And it's not like I'm turning off the Wi-Fi and all this stuff to make the test last long. The screen is on medium brightness and I did notice that it just auto dims after a little while, but then I'll just tap it back on. It's also on high bit rate in 4K 10-bit D-Log. So finally we concluded the test at 3 hours and 15 minutes. Really impressive. I actually ran the test again and this time it got even longer, 3 hours and 21 minutes. They did put a bigger battery in this thing, but they still work some magic with efficiency because typically I hope for at least 2 hours of real world battery life, but once we're clearing 3 hours it is on another level. One feature that I do wish this camera had was a feature for end trigger. Basically like the Pocket I was just going to keep the last few minutes of what I recorded. Like let's say I'm trying to do a trick shot like this. Will it go in? Oh my god, no. Not even close. But basically I might have to attempt that for like a hundred times before I get it. And when I finally get it, I don't need the first 99 misses, right? So an end trigger would just kind of capture that last few minutes or loop recording. So the three had two buttons up front. — Just the joystick and on and off. But now we have one, two, three, four and this joystick quite a bit nicer I must say. Yeah, it sticks out more. Feels much more like a real joystick opposed to previously it was like this like plastic little knob. — Feels more like a button that moves up and down. — Previously on the Pocket 3 this was the case, right? So you would take it and then put it in here and store it away so it's safe. But now for the Pocket 4 it's just this little clip and at first I didn't really like it too much. I was questioning whether it was going to protect the camera in the way I needed it to, but after using it for a little bit I actually really liked it and now when I see the previous Pocket 3 case I'm like, "Wow, this thing's really bulky and it's really fat in the pocket. " But the problem with the Pocket 4 little clip thing is that it's so small that I actually uh lost it.
Segment 4 (15:00 - 18:00)
Uh Just like before we got a wide angle adapter. So this is a 0. 75 15 mil equivalent. So how's that look? Show a little bit more of the environment, makes it easier to vlog with others like Frank over here. — Yeah. So wide angle, right? No wide angle. Not a huge difference, but a difference nonetheless. A little bit. Is it worth the hassle of having this little thing attached to it? Uh maybe. Maybe not. It depends. Depends on the situation you're in. — I wonder if you're able to like close it and turn it off with the wide angle lens adapter. Hmm. So it stops there. It doesn't do the wigging out. — But how cool is it that I can have this teeny little camera and my phone and just with that I can do some remote operation like this. All right, to wrap it up do we start with the things we love about this camera or the things we hate about it? I hate that it's similar to the Pocket 3. Talking about the Pocket 3 is awesome. It's a great camera, but if you have the three and you're using it just to vlog and tell stories, then you're fine with the three. My least favorite thing is the fact that there is no taller aspect ratio. You know, with the DJI Action 6 we had a one by one square. Really useful for people who want to get vertical and horizontal shots out of one shot. And you know, DJI did it on the Action 6 so I was like, "Oh, we'll probably see it here. " And we're stuck at 16 by 9 for 4K. And we do have a taller sensor by the way. Another thing when it comes to the color, I love that we have D-Log now, but they removed D-Log M. Like it would have been nice if they left D-Log M in here also because that way if you have a Pocket 4 and a Pocket 3 — and you want to intercut them in a vlog you can at least do D-Log M. Okay, so things we love now. I'm going to say the tracking is awesome. Internal memory, sweet. 107 gigs. — 107 gigs, that's awesome. I don't even need an SD card most of the time. — Yeah. And that little light, oh I love that little light. — For me I would say the 4K 240 just cuz it's something I don't even have in my Sony FX3, right? Like if there was a shot I needed to get and I needed really good slow motion, this is at the top of my arsenal. I mean above this would be the Ember, right? Like That's crazy. Another thing I love also which I didn't think I would love so much is the custom button. I use that thing all the time now. Basically you can take the things that you do the most often and just program it into that button which I love. It just makes the usability so much nicer. Yeah, that's cool. By the way, believe it or not this video not sponsored by DJI which is actually unfortunate for me cuz that means that I have to pay for my own flight and my hotels and food and sadness. But it was worth it. I had fun coming to Vancouver. Canada's fun. Hockey was fun and I had to come check out this camera. I mean I really do feel like the Pocket 3 was the camera of the year. Whatever year it came out, it was the camera of that year I'd say. Let's just say this video is sponsored by the subscribe button so you can see when some of the exciting new cameras come out this year. If the rumor mill is true, there should be some fun things going on. Like I mean oh the GoPro Mission 1, have you seen that? Micro 4/3 lenses. By the way, what do you think of my basketball skills I've been trying to show off a little bit. I got a $20 ball from Target earlier this year. Best thing I've done in a pretty long time. Such a good workout. I actually signed up for Steph Curry's master class on how to shoot properly and one of the things he says is to film yourself shooting because the way you think you shoot is different from how you look when you shoot. Just shooting like this is such a chill way to get a good workout in and you can just slowly improve. So we wrap up this episode with a awesome three-point shot. Check this out. Okay, this will give you a second to click on stuff. I'll be right back. Give me one more try. I'll get it this time I promise. I've been practicing so much for this moment. Here we go. Told you I would.
