Learn how to change the oil in a car or truck. In this case I have a brand new Duramax but the process is the same for a Power Stroke or Cummins. Changing the oil in a diesel is basically the same as a gasoline car except you want to use oil designed for diesel engines.
Diesel oil has a lot of soot in it due to burning diesel and soot is abrasive so it’s important you change the oil at the proper intervals. High quality synthetic oil and a good filter is a must.

Hey guys, Chris Fix here, and today I'm going to show you how to change the oil in a diesel, and this will be her first ever oil change because this is my brand new pickup truck. This is the first vehicle I've ever bought brand new, and I want to take good care of her so she'll last a good long time. So, let's get started. Now, as you can see, my truck just hit 5,000 mi, and it says I have 33% oil life left, but since this is the first oil change, I am going to do it early, and I'm going to show you why in a second. And this is all you're going to need to get the job done. It's very basic, and we're saving ourselves about $150 plus we're using high-quality oil, high-quality filter, and we know we're getting the job done correctly. First, you want to remove the oil fill cap. Next, slide your cardboard or oil absorbent mat under the car to catch any spills so you don't make a mess. And it's very important that your catch pan has enough capacity to drain all the oil in the oil pan. Now, we can break that 15-mm drain plug free and loosen it up the rest of the way by hand. Now, as we let that drain, we want to get an oil sample, and I'm going to show you the sample results at the end of this video. And with the oil drained, let's install our drain plug, a reusable gasket on it, and we just want to tighten it down all the way by hand, and then torque it to spec. Good. So, with our oil drained, now we can remove the old filter. So, the trick is to get some tin foil in here and make a little funnel, and that'll help prevent making a mess. Now, use an oil filter wrench at the end of the filter, and once it's broken free, now we can loosen it the rest of the way by hand. And look at that. Our tin foil is working perfect. And when you get to the end, just turn the filter down into the catch pan. That way the oil drains out and doesn't make a mess. So, it's out with the old used-up oil filter and in with the new one. And on diesels, it's very important to change the oil and oil filter with high-quality stuff because the oil is black with soot in it from burning the diesel. This is different than a gasoline engine. That soot is abrasive, and that'll cause wear if the big pieces aren't filtered out. Now, another little trick is to add the date and the miles on your filter so you know when it was last changed, and you also want to add oil to the O-ring. That way it's easy to remove for your next oil change. Now, we want to hand thread on our new oil filter, and you only want this hand tight. Do not use any tools to tighten this down. And once it's snug, we can remove the tin foil. The last thing to do is add the funnel and fill the engine with oil. In this case, the engine calls for 10 quarts of 15W40, and I'm using a full synthetic oil specifically designed for diesel engines. Good. After 10 quarts, let's take the funnel out and put the cap back on. Now, let's start her up. And now we want to let it run for a minute and let everything circulate. In the meantime, I'm going to go to the oil life monitor and reset that. Good. I'm also going to reset my trip mileage. Good. And now we can shut the engine and check the oil. So, we let the engine sit for 5 minutes. That way the oil drains down into the oil pan. We'll clean the dipstick to get a fresh reading. Make sure you push it all the way back down, pull it back out, and check it out. Perfect. You can see we're right at the top of the fill line, so we are done. And always recycle your old oil. I like to put it in the empty oil jug. And then once this is full, your local parts store, automotive shop, or recycle center will take this for free. And one last thing, our oil sample. You can screenshot this to read it all. We have high aluminum, iron, copper, lead, tin, potassium, and silicon. And that's just because this engine is breaking in. So, they said 6,500 mi, do another oil change, and check in.
