How Moderna Drove a 16% Lift in Team Cohesion with BetterUp | Customer Case Study

At Moderna, we went through unprecedented growth during the pandemic. We went from about 800 people in the United States to about 5, 6,000 people in 17 countries. So, it was quite an expansion. Our challenge was how do you really scale culture and how do you make sure you keep the performance standard high. That's when I reached out to BetterUp to do a study to find out what makes our employees thrive here and how can we start to learn about what those behaviors are to shape our environment. What we found from BetterUp is that self-reported work-life balance is up 18%. Resilience is up 15%. Recovery is up 16%. When I started working with BetterUp, I was hoping to learn how to grow as a manager and a leader. Sometimes you're afraid to give feedback cuz you're afraid you might offend someone. Going through the process and speaking with my coach, I realized that navigating those conversations really helped me give very honest feedback. That was received in a much better way than I thought that was going to go. I was very deep in the methodology of epidemiology. That is not an easy transition right over to a manager. My experience was more of an exploration of blind spots that I didn't quite know I had. I've learned to show up with curiosity, with some empathy. These are attributes that as a technical expert were not in my toolbox a year and a half ago, but I've learned as I become a people leader that those other elements are crucial to team success. BetterUp coaching switched my mindset from trying to solve everything by myself to think from a systems perspective. In the past, I tend to roll up my sleeves and jump into the question. Through BetterUp coaching, I realized that is more important to pause and reflect and think about solving this kind of problem with a new system in place.
