Hello everyone. In this video, we're going to talk about if a faster Wi-Fi router makes your internet faster. Now, some people think that if they get a new high-performance Wi-Fi router that it will make their internet faster. So, for example, a higherformance router may advertise speeds of 5, 9, or even 46 Gbits per second. And someone might think that this will increase their internet speed. But the fact is it doesn't. When a router boasts of these speeds, that speed is for your internal network in your home or business. It's the speed that's shared between your wireless devices and the Wi-Fi router. It has nothing to do with the speed of your internet connection. Because the only way to increase the speed of your internet is you have to contact your ISP, pay extra money, and upgrade to a faster internet plan. So until then, nothing is going to make your internet faster. So for example, when you want to install an internet connection in your home or business, you would contact an internet service provider and then you would choose an internet plan with an internet speed that suits your needs. And let's say that you choose an internet plan with a speed of 200 megabits per second. And then the ISP in most cases will send you an internet gateway which is a modem router combo or you can choose to buy one on your own. So 200 megabits is the maximum speed coming into your home and nothing that you add to your home is going to increase that speed. So now if you connect your computer using a network cable and if you do a speed test, you will get approximately 200 megabits per second on the speed test, which is what you paid for. Now, keep in mind when you order an internet plan, the internet speed that you order is guaranteed when your device is using a network cable and not Wi-Fi. Now, if you add a Wi-Fi router and then connect it to your modem and do the same speed test with a wireless device such as a laptop using Wi-Fi, the speed test will be lower than 200 megabits per second because Wi-Fi is not going to be as fast as using a network cable. And this is because Wi-Fi has to deal with a lot more than a cable does because the data in Wi-Fi is transferred over the air using radio waves. And radio waves has to deal with a lot of issues such as interference, signal strength, distance, crowded areas, security, and so on. So there's a lot of overhead when you're dealing with Wi-Fi. But when you use a network cable, that's a direct physical connection to your modem with little to no interference. So that's why using a cable connection is faster and more reliable than using Wi-Fi. So it's the best option to take full advantage of your internet speed. And this is also why Wi-Fi technology is always improving because as I stated earlier, with Wi-Fi, you have to deal with certain things that cables don't. So with each improvement in the generations of Wi-Fi, engineers are constantly developing new technologies to deal with these issues. So to put it simply, Wi-Fi's ultimate goal is to make wireless as fast, reliable, and secure as using cables. So if these fast Wi-Fi routers don't make your internet faster, what is the purpose of these fast speeds? Well, speeds on these Wi-Fi routers is to help make your internal home network run as smooth and as fast as possible when you have a lot of Wi-Fi devices, especially when those devices are doing things that take up a lot of bandwidth, such as streaming videos or downloading. And when you have a lot of Wi-Fi devices doing these things, the Wi-Fi router has to do a lot to make sure everything runs as fast and as smoothly as possible. Which is why Wi-Fi routers have all this technology that's built into them, such as multiple bands, muimo, QoS, multiple RU puncturing, and so on. And in addition, it takes special hardware to run these technologies, which is why they also have their own CPU and RAM that's built into them to handle all the processing that these technologies require. Now, if you have a small amount of Wi-Fi devices in your home, like two or three, you won't need a high performance router. You can just get by using an older one, and it'll work just fine. But if your home network starts to increase

and you start getting close to 10 Wi-Fi devices and then those devices are doing things that require a lot of bandwidth like streaming videos, you will start to see a slowdown in your home network because your older Wi-Fi router doesn't have the speed and technology to deal with it. So, this is where a newer high-speed Wi-Fi router will be beneficial because it will help alleviate the slowdown that's caused by a lot of devices accessing the internet. So, when you install a fast Wi-Fi router in your home, the members of your family might think that the new router made your internet faster, but the reality is it didn't. It just made better use of sharing the available internet bandwidth that's coming into your home. So, if you have 200 megabits of internet coming into your home and if you install a new router that has speeds of five, 9, or even 46 Gbits per second, your internet speed is still going to be 200 megabits and no more.
