What was the doomsday plane that could survive a nuclear war? By the mid1950s, a terrifying strategic question haunted the Pentagon. What would happen if a surprise Soviet nuclear strike completely wiped out Washington DC? How could the United States retaliate if the president and the entire chain of command were vaporized in an instant? The US Air Force devised a chillingly logical solution. take the command post to the sky. This was the birth of the doomsday plane. The concept was championed by the strategic air command or sack. They recognized that a groundbased command center was a fixed vulnerable target. An airborne command post though would be a moving target constantly flying and therefore almost impossible to destroy in a first strike. The plan developed from 1955 onwards was to convert a fleet of new KC-135 jet tankers into flying pentagons. These planes would be designated the EC135 and hardened against the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear blast. The mission would be given the code name looking glass and each plane would carry a general and full battle staff with the authority to command America's entire nuclear arsenal. The ultimate goal of the plan was to always have one of these looking glass planes in the air 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It was conceived as the ultimate mad insurance policy. MAD meaning mutually assured destruction here. Although the plan is also MAD in the traditional sense, it sent a clear message to the Soviets. Even if you destroy our government, our vengeance will be unleashed from a command post high above the fallout.
