What was the domino theory that obsessed American presidents? Imagine a line of dominoes. You push one over and the rest will inevitably collapse in a chain reaction one by one. This simple powerful image became the core of the domino theory, an idea that obsessed American presidents and drove US foreign policy for over 30 years. The theory was famously articulated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. He was trying to explain the strategic importance of French Indo-China, today's Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. He argued that if one country in a region fell to communism, the surrounding nations would inevitably topple as well. First Indochina, then Burma, Thailand, Malaya, Indonesia, and so on until the red menace had consumed all of Southeast Asia. This idea quickly became yet another justification for the policy of containment. It turned complex geopolitical struggles into a simple terrifying scenario that was easy for the public to understand. The logic was clear. To save the entire row, you had to stop the very first domino from falling. No matter how small or far away that domino was, this theory is possibly the single most important reason the United States plunged into the Vietnam War. Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon were all convinced that losing Vietnam would trigger a catastrophic chain reaction. The same logic was used to justify CIA interventions and support for brutal anti-communist dictatorships in Latin America, Africa, and beyond. But was the theory correct? When South Vietnam finally fell in 1975, the dominoes did not collapse as predicted. While Cambodia and Laos also fell, the rest of Asia stood firm. The domino theory was ultimately a flawed oversimplified view of the world. But its power led America into its second longest and most divisive ore.
