in this video I will be showing you how to create a pre-mixed chromatic gray watercolor pigment that I personally use a chromatic gray is a result of mixing complementary or opposite colors of the color wheel an example is blue which is a primary color mixed with the opposite orange a secondary color will result in a chromatic Ray normally pre-mix chromatic gray pigments are found in professional grade lineups like moon glow a dark violet made of ultramarine and trichonoid red and Viridian now you can take the black pigment and dilute it to achieve gray however the outcome is less interesting a chromatic gray is a combination of multiple pigments not necessarily complementary colors the chromatic raised pigments separate to an extent when mixed with water here you can see mixing two primaries blue and red will result in Violet then when mixed with a third primary yellow on paper will result in a chromatic gray this combination of violet and mixing with yellow is something that I use for creating interesting Shadows that glow as a convenience I would pre-mix an ultramarine permanent crimson and a dark green light Windsor green or Viridian mixing the first two will result in a red purple and when mixed with an almost opposite or complementary color like a dark green will result in a chromatic gray for this particular mix the result is a dark violet it's similar to Daniel Smith's moon glow which is much warmer with a lighter red you can totally replicate this with a student grade here I am mixing Windsor in Newton Cotman ultramarine cadmium red pale and Viridian hue tests as you mix to get the right ratio of the pigment mix I adjusted by adding a bit more ultramarine a backwash test reveals the separation of the Blues and the Reds you can adjust the three pigment mix by adding and mixing any of the three pigments on your palette before applying on paper this combination has been a staple mix for my painting value toning a neutral of sorts for the following painting study I have created I will be using all student grade paper pigments brushes and inexpensive fountain pen with waterproof fountain pen ink as you can notice the blue is separating from the mix by using the pre-mix chromatic gray it can help you practice tonal value control without worrying about color it can be a finished painting on its own or just for a quick study to determine the lighting concept of a main painting later on numerous times I had used this chromatic gray for my shadows in painting architectural scenes let me know what you think about this premix chromatic gray so let me know in the comments below thank you very much for watching
