We all know smoking is bad for you — but pop culture seems to have decided it's cool again. The “pop girlies” like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Charli XCX are partially to blame for the smoking renaissance we’re seeing in pop culture. Newsweek reporter Marni Rose McFall talks about why Gen Z is so fascinated with the aesthetics of cigarettes on Today, Explained. Listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts. Look, I know I shouldn't be doing this. Cigarettes are terrible for you, but I don't know if you noticed, but the world is a bit stressful right now. And also, it seems like smoking is sort of cool again, at least in pop culture. Eight out of 10 movies nominated for a best picture last year featured people smoking. And a lot of younger celebs have been puffing in public recently. We talked about this with Marne Rose McFall, who covers culture at Newsweek. Specifically in pop culture, we're seeing it with all the pop girlies. Whether it's Kylie Jenner on the card for a vanity fair, whether it's Sabrina Carpenter for interview mag, or Chapel Ran having a sig in the wig when she does her performance. And it's really interesting because mostly Jenzers seem interested in the way that smoking looks as opposed to actually smoking. Style analytics found that there have been a 70% increase in searches for the term smoking pose. So Jenzers in the way that they often are interested in things, it's this kind of parasocial relationship with smoking cigarettes. — And look, the CDC says smoking harms nearly every organ in the body and causes nearly half a million deaths in the US each year. And for now, the actual data says smoking rates are not going up. But what do you think? Are you seeing more people take up the habit in your life? Let us know in the comments below.
