How [ __ ] are we? If you've read headlines like these, you might think that the oceans are about to collapse, but if you peer behind the headlines, yes, the news is looking pretty bad. But no, we're not doomed. So, the AOK, the Atlantic meional overturning circulation is this vast ocean current that might slow down or even stop because of climate change. It stopping is what climate scientists would call a tipping point because once started it would be very hard to stop and once completed switch back on. It shutting down would disrupt the world's climate. We're talking brutally cold winters in Europe, sea levels skyrocketing on the east coast of America and disruption to rainfall patterns around the world. And a latest study which looks at the most accurate computer simulations we have raises the risks even further. But the reality is that climate scientists still don't really agree about what's happening to the AMO. While some scientists think that climate change has already slowed it down, others aren't sure it's even changing yet. There are only really two things that all the climate scientists I've spoken with agree on. One, if it did happen, it would be really bad. And two, we can still do a lot to lower the risks. Everything we know about the AMO shows that if we limit warming, which means limiting burning fossil fuels, then we lower the chances of a collapse happening. So, if you're seeing headlines like these and you're shutting down, well, I mean, I get it, but you're doing the worst possible thing. You're doing nothing.
