Segment 1 (00:00 - 02:00)

I was reading about how horrible systems like Chad GBT and Google are from an environmental impact and I was like before that people drove to the library. Let's talk about how much carbon they burn to answer this question versus what it takes now. Come on. — So this is just unhinged. This is making the claim effectively that the energy Open AI is using is all replacing people who previously drove to the library. Now, maybe I missed a really important report on this, but I don't think that the top sources of emissions in the world are agriculture, electricity production, and a driving to the library. Generative AI is increasingly being pushed as a tool for video creation, just shoving slop into our feeds. And I should point out that generating videos uses thousands of times more energy than textbased responses. And so the idea that we shouldn't really worry about the emissions because in these incredibly niche cases, we might actually be saving on energy is just so incredibly misleading. And the thing is, you don't just need to take my word for it. Let's see what the techs have to say for themselves. — I mean, like theoretically, at some points, you can see that like a significant fraction of the power on Earth should be spent running AI computing. — Yes. No, that's um that's definitely true. — I just love that response. Yes. Yes, that's definitely true. And the thing is, you don't need to listen to people taking down Sam Olman because he so effectively takes down himself. This isn't the only context in which he's made this claim. — Like, I do guess that a lot of the world gets covered in data centers over time. Do you really? But I don't know cuz maybe we put them in space. Maybe we build a big Dyson sphere around the solar system and say, "Hey, actually makes no sense to put these on Earth. " — Absolutely bonkers claim. So, I love the fact that these are his two realistic suggestions. Either we cover most of the world's surface in data centers. I mean, we need the Earth's surface for farming and nature or we cover space with our data centers to harvest the energy of the star. And you really see with Sam Orman that he tailors his message. So when being asked about environmental things, he really knows how to play it down. But here with the Ovon, he knows that for that kind of audience, really hyping things up, making them sound cool and far out is really going to appeal. — I don't know. It sounds cool to try to build them in space. — Oh, well, so long as it sounds cool, Sam, then it's a perfectly great rational idea. Just a child just making things
