Forty years ago, a historic non-stop flight around the world faced a critical, invisible threat: deafening engine noise that could cost the pilots their hearing. Join AVweb’s Matt Ryan at the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo for an exclusive sit-down with Chris from Bose Aviation to celebrate four decades of audio innovation. Discover the fascinating story of how Dr. Bose rushed to develop a revolutionary active noise-canceling prototype to save the pilots of the legendary 1986 Voyager flight, sparking a transformation in cockpit communication that continues to this day. From those pioneering early prototypes to the modern flight deck, Bose has completely redefined what it means to fly in comfort. Get an inside look at the evolution of their iconic headsets and find out exactly what separates their latest flagship models. We dive into the whisper-quiet jet environments perfectly suited for the ProFlight and explore the versatile, ultra-comfortable, low-clamping-force design of the highly popular A30. Is a premium headset really worth the investment for a student pilot just starting out? Tune in to find out why crystal-clear audio and noise cancellation aren't just luxury features, but critical safety tools for mastering ATC communication. Watch the full interview to hear the story behind the silence and see what the next generation of aviation audio looks like!

— Matt Ryan here with Avweb at Sun 'n Fun, joined today by Chris here at Bose. Um, thanks for having me and I get to be behind the desks. It's exciting. — this is exciting. Yeah, this is great. Thanks, Matt. Thanks for stopping by and great to see you. So, uh you guys are celebrating 40 years, uh I understand. So, what's kind of the story? What's the message you guys are putting out here at that Sun 'n Fun? Yeah. So, uh yeah, it's it's hard to believe that it's been 40 years that Bose has been in the aviation business. Um, we've probably been coming to Sun 'n Fun 25, 6, 7 years, I would dare say. But, it started really 40 years ago with Dr. Bose. Um, and not to get into too much detail, but basically, you know, he designed sort of active noise cancellation and we introduced one of the first aviation-related active noise cancellation headsets. Uh went on the Voyager flight for those who may know back in 1986. This was They were going to fly circumnavigate the globe without stopping and there was threat that they might lose about 20% of their hearing loss and Dr. Bose had already done the math for this headset, so they put a prototype together and sort of the rest is history. We then introduced the Model 1 and onto the headset 10 that a lot of people probably are familiar with, certainly the A20, which is very popular, and then our latest, which came out about 3 years ago, the A30. And uh about 4 years ago, we came out with ProFlight. So, the A30 is ideal for almost any platform. Uh eight uh the ProFlight, excuse me, is sort of more so for a quieter environment, a jet environment. But, uh here at Sun 'n Fun, the A30 is an ideal headset. Yeah. Yeah, I was trying it on a few minutes ago. They're, you know, had good demos and uh you know, the comfort level's really good. I think I I noticed the uh the old A20 before and I having the A30 is a little lighter. That's kind of nice. It is Yeah, so we Sorry, excuse me. We try to we try to focus on three things. Basically, the quality of the audio, the comfort of the headset, and the active noise cancellation. So, Bose pretty much pioneered active noise cancellation. And then over time, by using, whether it be different materials or tweaking the headset, the A30 in particular, as you just mentioned, is a, it, first of all, it's a lighter headset, and it has about 20% less clamping force. So, when you wear this over an extended period of time, it feels much lighter on the head. — And that's what I meant. Yeah, it's the pressure was a little bit Exactly. Yep. So, that lateral pressure is has been decreased. So, sticking with the history side of things for a second. So, you guys 40 years, you said it was 40 years of aviation. Have you guys, I know Bose obviously does plenty of other things. — Yep. Is that aviation specific or is that Bose specific? — That's aviation specific. Bose has been around since 1964. I'm sure a lot of the people watching have, are familiar with our home theater systems or Bluetooth speakers or our noise canceling, you know, headphones that they may wear flying commercial or something along those lines. Yes, so we have a plethora of products, and they've been around for a very, very long time. Uh, but yeah, the 40 years is specific to aviation. I was scared, I heard you say that, I was just curious. Yep. Um, yeah, so, as uh, obviously, I think for a lot of people, this is maybe not your first headset. For many it is, but for many it is also not. — Nope. Um, you have this kind of newer student pilots. What's kind of the value proposition maybe to them and how are you reaching out? — So, we have, you know, for the most part, kind of focused on pilots in general. And what we're trying to make a sort of, really reach out to the student pilot, the individual who is starting out with a headset, or starting out flying, I should say. I mean, at that point, it's it's critical. Obviously, you want a comfortable headset because you're going to be wearing it for an extended period of time, but more than that is the quality of the audio cuz as you know, hearing either what a flight instructor is telling you or ATC is going to be talking to, you know, you need to sort of be very focused. So, drown out any background noise. So, the noise cancellation does that for you and then the clarity of the audio, you know, provides that conversation that you're having with ATC again or, you know, your flight instructor. And it's you know, so we've really trying to focus more on like flight schools and getting people and new pilots to understand the benefits of having a headset that provides the comfort, the clarity, the noise cancellation, um not only to save their hearing, but you know, to really provide in critical situations a headset that allows them to hear everything that they need to hear. Right. Well, certainly appreciate, you know, kind of the overview and I know people are familiar with Bose for certain. You know, we've got a lot of got plenty of Bose wearers I'm sure out there listening, but uh you know, it's always good to hear some of the story behind it kind of some of the way where the

future's going. Anything you want to leave us with? No, I please we're at Sun 'n Fun. You know, please stop on by or if you're unable to, you know, go to bose. com or any of our resellers. I think it's important to try out the headsets and see what is sort of best for you whether it be a Bose headset or even some of our competitors. Um but try them out and see what you find is the best. I think you'll find that you'll love either the A30 or depending upon the environment the ProFlight headset that you're that is really the best suited for your flying needs. Sounds good. Well, thank you Chris for taking some time. I know it's busy. You got a lot of people to talk to. So, you know, we do appreciate the time. No problem. Yeah. So, this has been Bose Aviation with Chris and then that Ryan with AdWeb. We'll see you next time.
