The Tombstone Question That Changed Investing

Part of my previous work was working with Wayne Silby who would share this story of this experience that he had in the late 1970s when they were first starting Calbert and they it was quite a successful money market fund at the time and he went to this Buddhist retreat and they had them reflect on what would it say on their tombstones and his reflection was it would say the man that made 2% more than the next man and he reflected he said this is really the legacy that I want to leave and so he went back to his team and he encouraged them to integrate social responsible investing into what they were doing and I said it's now 45 billion in assets under management but it really came from this moment thinking about some of these questions around meaning and purpose
