The cost of squeezing our allies

Trump has used the stick more than the carrot in terms of negotiating with our allies. From a negotiation perspective, have those been successful? The way I think about it, what Trump is doing is he's looking at these things in isolation and saying, I can squeeze you for more. I can get more if I were to press you because I have leverage here. The playing field is slightly tilted and I'm going to squeeze you. And yeah, you can get a slightly better deal if you do that. The problem is, as any good businessman knows, you don't build great businesses on the basis of transactions. You build them relationships.
