How much is a life worth? Well, you might be thinking you can't put a price on human life. And well, you'd be wrong. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the value of a human life is $0. Yep. For years, for decades, the Environmental Protection Agency has assessed the damages caused by things like air pollution according to the costs from things like asthma attacks and premature death. But now the impact on human health won't be assessed and the only thing that will be assessed is the cost to industry. And yeah, hopefully it goes without saying that this is kind of countered the very purpose of the Environmental Protection Agency. Changing this calculus can make it way easier for polluters to pollute way more. And just to really emphasize, pollution isn't just some kind of nuisance. It's a major source of death worldwide. Air pollution causes around 1 in eight deaths. Around half of those are caused by burning fossil fuels. This could be an opportunity for a huge win-win. Tackling climate change would also mean we tackle a huge amount of air pollution deaths. But as with so many things which could be easy wins, the Trump administration has just turned it into a massive lose lose.
