Segment 1 (00:00 - 01:00)

The human eye can process information in a split second. So, it takes less than a second for your video to be lost in obscurity forever. Or, if within that 1 second, something captures your audience's attention, that keeps it for the rest of the video. I'm a completely broke new YouTuber who's trying to get monetized. So, I've been digging into what attention actually looks like from a neuroscience perspective. Here's what I found. There's actually two types of attention. Bottom-up and top-down. Bottom-up attention deals with fast movements, unexpectedness, high contrast, and jolts of attention. Whereas, top-down is goal-directed attention. This is me deciding where I want to place my attention and deliberating in my head what is worth my attention based on my goal. Bottom-up can grab attention, but top-down can keep attention. Even though that in itself was an aha moment for me, there's more to it than that. Our brains operate in a predictive mode. They're always trying to get ahead of what's ahead of us. We use clues from the past to interpret the present to predict the future. So, that means within that original first second, viewers are trying to predict if a video is going to be worth their time to watch or not. And the only way that they can know is by using clues from their past. So, if they've seen a video that is like your video before, they're more likely to interpret it in the same way that they interpreted the previous video. So, attention really works on a dance of known and unknown things. If you want people to pay closer attention to your hooks, stay longer, watch your videos, that's what you need. What do you think?
