Alex Osterwalder, co-founder of Strategyzer and creator of the Business Model Canvas and Value Proposition Canvas, explains why the company has made a fundamental shift — from books to playbooks. Books are great for learning. But they rarely lead to fast, consistent results. Teams struggle to translate concepts into action, and hiring coaches or consultants doesn't scale. Playbooks solve that. In this video, Alex walks you through: What a Strategyzer playbook actually is (and how it differs from a book or e-learning) How the step-by-step guided format gets teams to concrete outcomes faster The visual workspaces, AI assistance, and facilitation design are built into every playbook A real-world example: how Honeywell used custom playbooks across their global growth symposiums in the US, Europe, China, and India Whether you're working individually or leading a team, Strategyzer Playbooks help you get on the same page — and produce results, not just learning. Books to playbooks shift

Hi, my name is Alex Osterwalder. I'm the founder and CEO of Strategyzer. You might know me from the Business Model Canvas or the Value Proposition Canvas or the books up here of which we sold millions. But now we're on to something way more exciting, which is the transition from books to playbooks. Now, let me tell you what I'm talking about. So, I love books and I love the tools we make, but when it comes to impact, they're not ideal because they don't lead to immediate and fast results. Why? Because you need to translate the content of the book into structures, workshops, et cetera. Now, people struggle to do that. And doing it by yourself often leads to weak outcomes because maybe you're doing it the first time or you just don't have the experience that we have because we're not smarter, we've just done it thousands of times. So, you could hire consultants and coaches, but that's expensive and it rarely scales. So, what we did is we transitioned from books where it's all about learning and concepts and they go quite deep and I love those objects, but when it comes to outcome, we transitioned to playbooks. And playbooks help you to get to immediate results. So, they have different strengths than the books. So, let's have a look at what I mean with playbooks. So, a playbook for Strategyzer is a step-by-step guided approach on our platform to lead you to a very concrete outcome. And of course, we use visual tools and visual processes because they're extremely effective. And we design facilitation into the playbook if you don't have access to coaches or the Strategyzer team. So, what does a playbook concretely look like? So, on the left-hand side, you have a step-by-step sequence that we guide you through based on everything we've learned to get you towards an outcome. That could be a business model canvas, a value proposition canvas, could be an assessment of your business model, or formulating with AI your value proposition. Now, first we just explain the concepts very quickly, but we don't stop at the e-learning. We give you short content, and then we immediately get you to work on concrete objects in pre-structured visual workspaces, so that you get immediate first results step-by-step. And one example would be a data object that you create, for example, a customer profile. So, that won't just be a dumb visual object, it will actually be a data asset that you can reuse in different contexts, like an assessment, a customer interview, or even a presentation. And while the playbooks can be used individually, they're really, really powerful as a team collaboration tool because you get on the same page. So, here you have it, all the different aspects of a playbook. Now, what gets me really excited is that we make all of our processes increasingly accessible. So, we start with a small playbook

library that's approaching 10 playbooks for one price, and we're going to, hopefully, get to dozens and dozens more in the next couple of weeks and months. So, let me dive in to quickly show you what a playbook library looks like. So, once you get access, you get access to all the different playbooks we already launched. Strong value propositions and differentiation with Gen AI is one of my favorite, but you'd also have customer profile interviews or competing on business models, which helps you create a business model and look at the strength of the business model. So, a whole series of different business um playbooks. Now, you can go into the projects and look at everything that you applied. You run a playbook to create an outcome, a business model, an value proposition, an assessment of a business model. And in a project, when you go into that, well, you can see the playbook. It tells you step-by-step what to do. At the beginning, of course, there's an introduction, there's an explanation. Often, I'm the one doing that or the right expert. And then, of course, we don't stop with explaining or e-learning because what we really want you to do is to go into these workspaces and work. So, here, for example, it's about creating a customer profile and in addition, we use AI to help you do that quickly. So, that's the public playbook library. Sometimes, we're even asked to design custom playbooks for companies. Here's an example of what we did with Honeywell. We were brought in to run their growth

Custom playbooks for enterprises

symposiums. There's one in the US, one in Europe, one in China, one in India. The person who brought us in is Suresh, the CTO, and he had two objectives with us is to help teams that are working on projects to formulate clearly how they're creating value for customers and how they're capturing value for Honeywell. Sounds basic, but that is actually very powerful to do this in a very synthesized way. We didn't stop there. We wanted to know how far these projects are from idea to real business success and results. So, the teams show the evidence that supports their ideas and the leadership then judges the evidence. So, how did we do this? We planned the workshop, but before the workshop, the teams work on the Strategizer Playbook, and they create these different objects like a customer profile, a business small canvas, rough financial projections, and they come into the workshop prepared. So, you can see that here the teams continue to work during the day. In this case, I was standing on stage on shaping their next big ideas. And to round off the day, what do they do? They present their ideas in a very sharp and concrete way to the leadership, and the leadership judges the ideas by evidence strength. So, pick if you'd like to get access to our public playbook library with one price, you get access to all of the playbooks, or if you want to bring us in into your enterprise for a custom playbook.
