Segment 1 (00:00 - 05:00)

Apple confirmed a couple things for us in the last couple days. For one, Dubdub is happening on June 8th. And for two, more ads are coming to iOS. They decided to not save that announcement for on stage, but instead coupled this announcement along with a new Apple business program. It's actually quite clever marketing when you think about it. Let's begin. So, because Apple knows no one actually wants this, and yet somehow in some way, some fashion, they have to announce it, they decided that they're going to launch this totally free Apple business program, which basically just gives you lots of controls over which devices, which employees are using so that you can sync notes and calendar events across all of them more easily. Honestly, could be quite helpful where we work. We're pretty much all using Macs anyway. Though to be fair, there were already lots of thirdparty programs that could already do this. So it's not like they necessarily invented anything. It's just there's now a first-party solution that's probably cheaper than using the third party option. But alongside that announcement into the fine details, they're like, also to make businesses happier with Apple products and services, we're building in a way for you to advertise your business in a local region. This is actually something Google makes a ton of money from when it comes to search, especially when it's regionalbased advertising. Like you want someone in your area, if they're looking for a plumber to be recommended to your plumbing business specifically, you can pay Google to say if anybody searches that within this city, I want to show up as one of the top results and a lot of success has come from that. So, it looks like Apple Maps has probably become so popular and so successful because it's just the default map application that Apple's looking at this as a missed opportunity. Like, hey, we could be taking money from businesses in these areas and have them show up in the search results whenever you're looking for a particular restaurant or business, whatever it may be. And to be fair, on the UI that they've now published on the website, this is not a leak. rumor anymore. This is straight up just actually happening this summer in both the US and Canada. It looks at least fairly clear and obvious, similar to what Google does with their search results where they label this is an ad. Just to try to make it a little bit more transparent, not trying to trick anybody into thinking, "Oh, this just happened to be the top result. I guess it's because it had the best reviews, right? " No. At least so far, it looks like they're being pretty straight up with it and saying like, "Okay, this business is showing up, but they are paying to show up in this particular location, which is good. " And I'm sure knowing Apple, there's probably extra layers of privacy and security built in so that those businesses can't exactly see who individually is tapping on their link. And they likely want to make all that data pretty anonymous so that you find out how many people are tapping on your link, but you don't know the data of those people. you don't know their age range or gender, ethnicity, that kind of personal data. I think Apple will still find a way to collect advertiser revenue from this business model while simultaneously boasting that they do it in a more privacy and secure focused way than Google. But remind me Tim, again, who's powering the next generation of Siri? That's okay. We don't have to worry about that. But it does, I think, put a lot of fear in people of what iOS could become. Like that used to be one of the biggest selling points of Apple and using their first-party applications was that you got so many built-in adfree options that were secure and private and you didn't have to worry about random ads showing up. Frankly, that just sounded way more of like an Android thing that you would interact with. But now it feels like Apple in an effort to try to boost that services revenue is going down the same path as their Android counterparts. And I know this sounds ridiculous, but it does beg the question. I would love to hear your guys's thoughts in the comments. Will there be Apple Maps Plus in the future? Will you actually pay money to get rid of ads in Apple Maps? I don't know. I'm starting to wonder if I would be willing to pay money just to not get the random ads that you might find through Apple TV or something. I mean, thankfully, it's pretty easy to shut off notifications from these apps if you really don't want to get advertised to, but it feels like it's becoming an increasingly common thing for Apple. Even though, yes, Apple's UI and software team is so good at implementing things in a way that is clean and fresh that frankly, I just don't feel that annoyed when I get ads on my iPhone because it's so first-party integrated compared to what you're used to seeing with third party ads on websites or on Android phones. But still getting popups on my phone that's like you could subscribe to Apple Fitness Plus right now or there's a new movie on Apple TV Plus. Sign up for that. Oh, sorry. It's just Apple TV now. That's not confusing at all. But I'm still sure their biggest bread winner has to be iCloud subscriptions because basically Apple has the perfect advertisement whenever your phone fills up with storage, which because the photos and

videos are taking up increasingly more space over the years, just about everybody runs into that at some point. And Apple's just like, "Oh, shucks. Your phone's out of storage. Here are five different storage plans for you to choose from at a low monthly rate. " So, thankfully, I don't think Apple Maps should be that in your face about it. But, it does make me wonder like where this could keep going. Like, if Apple continues to push the boundaries of ads through the Maps app, could you show up in certain locations? And if a business pays Apple a certain fee, do I just get popups on my phone now that say, "Hey, this new restaurant is in the area and it's happy hour for the next 90 minutes. You should stop by. " So, it's like tracking your location, taking the business's money, and using that to like send out push notifications. I guess that's where I consider the line too far. It's fairly easy enough for me to just scroll past the ad on the search results and be like, "Okay, that's biased. I don't want to go there. " But it's another thing if it's like I'm expecting an important text from a boss or a family member and instead of getting that text, I get a popup on my phone that says I need to go check out the Chimmy Chungas that are a/4 mile away. No thank you. That's not the Apple I want. If Apple keeps doing this, am I going to switch to Android? Probably not. That's just way too much work. I've done it a few times just for the sake of review purposes, and boy is it annoying. And now that everybody at my work is using iMessage and AirDrop, that would just get super annoying really fast. But that doesn't mean I can't complain about the ecosystem I'm already in. It's not like we have too many options to switch away to anyway. How do you guys feel about ads showing up in Apple Maps? Do you feel like there's a clean, simple, elegant way to incorporate it, or do you think this is going to be a slippery slope that just gets worse and worse as time goes on? Feel free to let me know your thoughts down in the comments below. And thank you to everybody supporting this channel directly. seriously helps us out a ton as does just watching these videos. So, thanks again. This is your streak here. I will see you all in the next one.
